I’ll have to give this a try too. New soundcard just came in which is a step in the right direction!

Just to add that the colorspace on those LDs is different from what’s used today on most devices (sRGB).

In fact, there are 3 NTSC color spaces, with the older ones having more information than sRGB:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_spaces_with_RGB_primaries#Specifications_with_RGB_Primaries

And those LDs might even use the older (pre 1987) NTSC primaries ( https://www.saji8k.com/displays/color-space/ntsc-1953/ ), that give a larger color space than sRGB.

This is technical, but something to take into account if you are interested in preserving the original color timing.
You need to convert the colorspace to get that.

A quick conversion of the stills posted above to sRGB gives me this:

No clue on how to do it for a video file…

That raises a good point.

I’ve been emailing with the creator of the Domesday Duplicator and I’m thinking I might take a run at building one. I believe that will give us the exact color that was written to the disc. @willarob @Clashradio

looks good.
do you a color correction and multiple languages?

So far I haven’t messed with color correction at all and I’m capturing the digital stereo signal, just the English track.

Ideally, I am aiming for a GOUT sync’d project so you can add in whatever audio you’d like

Hello everyone,

ClashRadio contacted me through the DomesDay86 Facebook group regarding a desire to purchase a a erm… DomesDay86 as I and a partner are taking orders for a second run of full kits that come essentially Plug N’ Play. Not sure if this is the right place since it’s simply a thread and talking about Star Wars (love that you guys are working on updating the LD releases!), but the DdD86 enables full digitization of LaserDiscs at a raw level into what are essentially image files akin (but at a much deeper level) to .ISO files made from CDs and DVDs. You can check out more information on it at https://www.domesday86.com/ My spiel regarding prices follows:

Current pricing:

NOTE - If the price is prohibitive, contact me as opposed to remaining silent! I’m open to making arrangements to make it affordable for you.

$450 - DomesDay86 Full Kit that is Plug N Play.
$327 - DomesDay86 Duplicator Board Only
$180 - Calibration Board + Calibration Cable.
$40 - 3D printed case.

Higher prices are due to having already placed the initial order and thus not being able to obtain a volume discount for this run.

Please contact me here, nbacon0@gmail.com, or on Discord at RetroRomper#2684

I’ve noticed in working on this project that the films as they appear on the disc are mathematically closer to 2.28:1 ratio. I’ve read that a number of films including the 97 LDs we actually 2.28 and not 2.35 when placed on disc.

To quote the LaserDisc Database:

For unknown reasons - and making a mockery of the THX LD programs so-called “standards” - the Special Edition transfers in this box set have incorrect aspect ratios. Star Wars is only 2.21:1, instead of the correct Panavision ratio of 2.39:1, while Empire and Jedi’s aspect ratios are both 2.28:1 - better than Star Wars, but still short of the original Panavision framing.
