Piracy not to blame in decline of moviegoers

Heya, I've stumbled across an interesting NY-Times article linked to by Slashdot:

lucyfersam writes "In a somewhat surprisingly earnest assessment, the NYTimes has an article about the massive decline in movie-going that does not once try to blame piracy and file-sharing programs. It sounds like studios are beginning to understand that they have only themselves to blame." From the article: "Multiples theories for the decline abound: a failure of studio marketing, the rising price of gas, the lure of alternate entertainment, even the prevalence of commercials and pesky cellphones inside once-sacrosanct theaters. But many movie executives and industry experts are beginning to conclude that something more fundamental is at work: Too many Hollywood movies these days, they say, just are not good enough."
What are your thoughts on this?

It took them that long to notice that movies aren't good enough? I mean, what do they think when they see the poster for Male Gigolo 2 or 40 year old virgin? "Hmnn this is a good film. This is why the Lumieres invented the modern cinema. This is ART."
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Sad but true. If I could, I'd chop up and destroy every copy of some movies and use a neuralzier on everyone who had ever seen them.

except that 40 year old virgin is actually getting people to go see it, and if you read the article you would see it was classified as a success. Also im pretty sure it took #1 for the box office the weekend it came out. Though they also called Fantastic Four a success, not sure how well it did in the box office, but honestly I thought it was entertaining...it was no x-men or spiderman, but it was decent (ie better than a lot of the crap that gets released)

I wasnt referring to this films as failures, but as pieces of crap that are currently on the theaters.

I havent heard many people that have seen 40 year old virgin, or really even read any reviews...but everything ive heard is basically saying its hilarious. Though one person did think the jokes got old about half way.

But as ive not seen it i couldnt really say if its crap or not. But i will agree that somewhere around 90% of the stuff released lately has been crap.

The fact that the movie was even made speaks volumes about the morons it seems our planet has produced.

Forty Year Old Virgin was good. Not just funny, but also a good movie as well. If you say it's a bad movie you either judged it on the previews or happen to be in the minority. I will agree though that there a lot of movies out there that are just not worth the price of gas and a ticket, as well as just my time.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Im actually looking forward to seeing 40yr old virgin, but its true. Too many bad movies are whats killing the average movie-goer. <---Did I say that right?

also remember that another part of the probelm is that they are using the same story-telling formula for many of these crappy movies. I actually like the movies that try to take story-telling to new and interesting places. Movies like ButterFly Effect and Memento are good examples. You don't have to completely copy what these movies did, just try to explore story more and take it places it's not been to.

Now, don't you also think that the movies are getting worse because the audience is dumbing down? I mean, if you want to be surrounded by idiots just go see one of these comedies like Scary Movie, which is one of the WORSE movies ever imagined - let alone produced. I blame the Wayans and the producers of American Pie-like comedies.

I think the decline in movie goers, is because Hollywood has lost it's creativity. I am getting very pissed at the fact that people keep making remakes.

I tend to keep an eye on independent films, now.

At least, there is some creativity in that "genre".

Sort of on-topic, since this is a movie discussion:

I'm about to start filming a documentary at my school, St. Bernard Preparatory School, which is also a Benedictine monastery. I am hoping to uncover the mystery on one of the buildings on the grounds, which is said to be haunted. Legend has it that back in the 70s, a monk hanged himself in one of the upper rooms, and there is a marker in the shape of a cross set in one of the floor tiles and is said to mark the spot where the monk was found. I plan to interview/film some of the older monks and other people that are in any way involved with the building in question. Then the fun starts:

I, along with two trustworthy cohorts, will request to spend 24 hours in the building, with nothing but food, flashlights, cameras, and video cameras, and document any supernatural occurrences.

This began as a journalism class project that seems to be growing by the day. It will be VERY low-budget, shot simply on a home video camera, but that shouldn't detract from the actual documentary. I hope to have it completed by Halloween, so that I can also write an article about it and have a special showing of it at my school on or around Halloween night.

If it is successful, would anyone be interested in copies of this? Maybe i can get Rikter to handle that part.

no offense but it sounds kind of like a blair witch type thing. Id be interested to see it, especially if some supernatural stuff happens.

but speaking of independent films you should check this film out if you get a chance http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337585/ its called Bomb The System. Its good, was actually made by a friend of my brothers. Dont know if its still in theaters and if it is its only in small indie theatres. But there may possibly be a dvd release, if there is i recommend at least renting it

I'd bet my money that you see nothing. Also, be prepared to run into roadblocks. The officals at your school might take a dim view at making light of a monk killing himself.

The entertainment industry in general is in flux. Technology is taking the Holy Grails of music and movie production and placing them in the hands of ordinary citizens. While it is true that you will have people who are genuinely talented and producing some of the most interesting music and movies to come out of the system, this sea change in the industry is largely showing that the emperors have no clothes.

You need only look at the last year of movies to see this.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

i'm interested in how this documentary turns out. with what your looking at, you could easily put together a 30 minute piece that could be viewed seriously at colleges.

scary movie was made to be bad, every single thing in the movie was made to be cliche and stolen thats why its funny cause it makes fun of bad movies.
