The difference between TMP and TWOK is that TMP actually had a video master made by Paramount. Pre-Director's Edition, the only video master of the extended TWOK was the ABC master.
As I said earlier, my theory is that ABC mastered the extended TWOK themselves.
It was Meyer who constructed the version that was broadcast by ABC.

I have the ABC cut on tape, but the audio track is pretty sluggish. Where can I be able to find this version of the ABC Cut of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, which is generally regarded as The Empire Strikes Back of the Star Trek franchise? I resist to download a torrent of this.

Hello! I’ve been a long time lurker of this site and Star Trek II is one of my favorite movies. I have copies of it on VHS, CED, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-Ray in pretty much all released versions. I do remember the ABC version coming on TV and noticing the differences in the scenes.
The (original) Director’s cut is nearly identical to the the ABC version save for an extra notification from the simulation computer in Kobyashi Maru opening and the turbolift scene between Kirk and Saavik. There are also some censored (trimmed) scenes that were considered too graphic for TV (mainly related to the Ceti Eels)
I would be happy to make a restoration of this, though I don’t have the ABC version. I do have CED, Laserdisc, and VHS, versions of the Pan and Scan releases. I also have the director’s cut DVD which most of the alternate scenes can be pulled from and cropped to match the P&S. The color timing is different in the director’s cut and will need to be matched. I have all the equipment to capture these, including line and frame based TBCs and a proc amp. I’m also pretty familiar with VirtualDub/Avisynth and I have a license for Neat Video.
Where could I find the ABC source that was mentioned before? I saw mention of “Spleen”, but I’m not familiar with that. If the source is 29.97 FPS NTSC video, it wouldn’t take too much effort to the pull out those scenes and drop them into a Laserdisc or VHS rip, color balance and do IVTC on it to get back to 24 FPS non-interlaced frames.

Funny this gets bumped as I was backing up my DVD-R of my original recording. Weird the DVD-R has gone bad yet my DVD-RW still plays fine. The DVD-R was still readable by my PC drive though.
sardonyx, if you can’t find it online somewhere shoot me a PM, and I’ll see about sending you a copy. I would love to see a hybrid restoration finally happen with this.

I wonder if sardonyx ever started on his ABC-TV project. I’m currently working on tinkering together a 720p Widescreen TMP SLV as well as cleaning up a slightly noisy 4:3 LD rip of SLV. I would love to find the TWOK ABC-TV cut to deinterlace and run some cleaning filters on after I kludge my way through the two SLVs. It can’t be found online in the normal places though. I’ve got a vhs copy of theatrical TWOK back home and I bet that between the two, a cleaned up, detelecined 4:3 ABC cut could be stitched together. I was planning to start working on 36-40 Flash Gordon after SLV but I’ve already got those sources lying around and and I’ve got Star Trek on the brain atm. I’ve been told it can be found on ms but I don’t have access to that place. Anybody 'round here know where one could hunt for that?
Ok I’ve gotten ahold of all the TWOK ABC cut materials I can find and I have been spending some time learning and practicing with avisynth. I’m going to be cleaning, deinterlacing, and running IVTC on the Theatrical 4:3 TWOK laserdisc capture and two separate captures of the actual TWOK ABC TV broadcasts. I’m going to get these materials as clean as I can possibly can and then use the best elements of each to stitch together a restored 4:3 ABC-TV version of TWOK.
None of these materials have the original commercials nor do I have knowledge of where and when the breaks were supposed to happen. I had an idea of something I’d like to do but I would need some help from folks who know better than I do about the commercials. I’ve read that The ABC TWOK broadcast took up a 3 hour time segment so that’s a start. If I could find out which points in the film the commercial breaks were supposed to happen I could spend some time researching and hunting down 1985 commercials (non-regional nation-wide commercials) that were broadcast on ABC and edit them into the film for a simulated non-regional ABC broadcast of the film.
Ideally I’d end up with a release that includes two edits of this restoration in one folder. One as just restoration of the ABC version of the film without commercials and a separate one with the commercials edited in to simulate a broadcast on ABC.
Is this still available? I used to have the more commonly shared version i have lost my DVD. I looked for it on Archive.org they sometimes have tape recordings of tv broadcasts up there. I did not see it.
