the doc isn't in AC-3, so I haven't capped it

so.. does this mean that the doc isn't going to be conerted to dvd? damn... I was really looking forward to that .... :-(

No, I'm sure the doc will be capped. Just not by me, 'cause it isn't in AC-3. I'm doing the AC-3 capping and cover scanning only; MeBeJedi is next, and he'll be doing the usual video/audio capture. His player is better than mine for NTSC material.

Done the scanning. I scanned the three-panel fold-out insert, plus the front and back of the box. I found that at 300dpi, I still got weird moire-induced banding. So I scanned everything at 400dpi. Way overkill, but whatever. I saved each of the 15 or so scans it took (lots of overlap, for easy stitching) as PNG files.

While I have a captive audience, let me remind you all once again that JPG is crap at things like white text on a black background; it was designed for photos, and photos are really the only thing JPG is good for. For anything else (text, solid colours, line art -- in other words, a lot of the stuff that ends up on a DVD cover) a compressed-but-lossless file format like PNG or TIF is much better. And, in some instances, a lossless format can actually be smaller than a lossless JPG of the same thing!

Anyway. Here is a tiny sample of one of the scans:

I'm sure the scans will be made available soon/eventually.

Yeah, I'm interested in them too. Can we expect a Rapidshare/MegaUpload?

I don't mind providing the scans -- several of you have asked, either with posts here or direct e-mail -- but I'm not in charge of this here project. Reverend Beastly started this thing and has been moving it along, so I think it's up to him whether scans get released into the wild -- especially directly from me.

Reading back over the thread, it seems pretty likely RB will approve. But I'd like to have it made explicit before sending anything anywhere.

Assuming he does approve, though, how you want this stuff sent? It's about 699MB. I'd rather not torrent it, and I have no experience with posting big-ass binaries to Usenet (no stranger to downloads of big-ass binaries, of course) nor any other download-this-huge-file system.

In fact, I'd be happiest sending out some CDs in the mail. I think I can probably knock off a few copies and stick 'em in envelopes faster than I can figure out PowerPost and wait for that to finish.

So, if you're interested in a copy, please send me some e-mail (click below) and let me know your address. Serious enquiries only, please! These files are not ready-to-print DVD covers; they're huge, overlapping raw scans. You will need to know a fair amount about Photoshop (I'd imagine layers, Gaussian blurring, resizing and cropping will be involved) and some time and effort will have to be invested to get them ready for DVD coverization.

Approved on my end. Can you get those discs to MeBe ASAP? I'll reimburse you shipping charges.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

If you would like your scans upload to newsgroup I would be more then happy to post for you, I could post a cd in no time.
PM if you would like my help.

Sounds cool, segaflip. I can't PM you because my PM box is full. Could I ask you to e-mail me at the address below? I've got 2GB (and counting) of storage space, instead of just enough for 25 short messages...

I'll get them out by the weekend. I'll find out the total shipping costs (including, if you don't mind, the incoming surcharges for taxes and duties), and submit my expenses after the discs are outta here.

That all sounds just fine to me. Email me and keep me with the final numbers.

I'd like the disc of scans... but I can't exactly afford to pay for postage and all that, if there'll be another way (besides paying for a disc in the post or newsgroups) please let me know.

Anyone know what newsgroup that I should post the disc of scans to?
Not sure if it fits into a newsgroup, might just throw it up on a.b.starwars for the heck of it.

Any input?

if someone wants to send me a copy of the discs once they hit the states (assuming karyudo is just sending ReverendBeastly one as it'd be cheaper), id be willing to forward on say 5 copies to people (preferably in the US) that are going to make covers free of charge on the caveat that they will actually make at least one cover and post it up in this thread. klokwerk, if your in the states ill consider you to be the first of the 5.

segaflip, you may as well just post in in a.b.starwars. I doubt many will be interested in these scans that following this project (which is on a SW related to begin with!).

I can't remember if this was already mentioned, but after checking amazon, the release date for the official Director's Cut is November 29th-- with SRP of $26.98, amazon price $20.23.

And someone there posted that it's one disc? Will all the goodies from the laserdisc fit on one DL DVD? Unless it's 2-sided, a la Superman: The Movie (or is that the same principle as DL?). Or, unless it's just the Director's Cut, no extras. Seems like a bunch of feature-laden LD's have gotten incomplete or lacking DVD releases, so that would be lame, but not surprising.
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

klokwerk is actually an Antipodean, a fellow Australian to be exact, so he really couldn't be too much further away!

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Correct, I am an Australian. But now I'm confused, what was I to be the "first of 5" for?

well, there's 2 common kinds of 2-sided discs.. DVD-10 and DVD-18.

imagine that a double-sided disc is just two DVDs with the non-readable sides glued together. (that's what they are, pretty much!)

DVD-10 would be two single-layer discs, back to back.

DVD-18 would be two dual-layer discs, back to back.

(there's also DVD-14, which has one single layer side and one dual layer side.)

the only feasible way for the complete frighteners documentary to be on this new release would be to use a DVD-18 type of disc. the movie (and maybe some of the other extras) on side one, and the documentary on side two.

[edited to correct myself on the terminology from the dvd demystified URL]

isn't a single layer double sided disc a dvd-10?
dvd-9 is a double layer single sided, dvd-5 is single layer single side and you just double the numbers for the double sided discs.

i stand corrected, said the man in the orthopaedic shoes.

i've edited my post. the same statement still remains though, the only feasible way to get this documentary on would be on a dual layer side of a disc..
