If the Superman I & II are to be used as backround for this movie then by definition, its a sequel. Either their part of the same universe are they aren't.
I think casting Spacey as Luther was a great move. I can see him doing very well in the part.

I think this Superman is supposed to be the remake of an idealized sequel. Get it?
About Spacey: I don't like casting him, not because of his acting - which is great btw - but because it kinda carrer-damaging. He'll probably do it like he did in Usual Suspects, off-key pseudo-villain guy.
