Are they really hoping to make a quick buck from the people in self isolation…
Are they really hoping to make a quick buck from the people in self isolation…
It was coming out Tuesday anyway. Not sure how it hurts that it actually came out Friday. Or that it somehow changes a normal release to “making a quick buck.”
The whole world is on pause right now. I have no misconceptions that this is some sort of “gift” or however more gullible people might be framing it. This is still a major corporation selling consumer goods to a large audience. But it’s also not like they’re charging people more to get it early, or being predatory about it. The entertainment industry (sports, tv, films, concerts) is kind of just… stopping. For the sake of hopefully preventing the spread of a deadly disease. Nobody’s really going to theaters. Nobody’s making shows. Movies aren’t coming out. Ballgames aren’t going on.
If that means someone at Disney was like “you know what? Just put it out now. Everyone’s going to be at home for the next month or so regardless, what can it hurt?” then I don’t really have a problem with that.
Movies aren’t coming out, and some movies have halted shooting/production. So I just see it for what it is, a corporate cash grab. Logically 3 days won’t make a difference, but then gain logically why do this at all.
But how is it a “cash grab” now as opposed to Tuesday? I mean, it’s just as much a cash grab THEN, too, isn’t it?
If you think it’s opportunistic you have to point out what opportunity you think is being exploited and how that exploitation is unfairly hurting anything.

Make no mistake, this was a promotional move. They actually had it on the news last night as a full story. Websites have it as a story.
Releasing it early gives them free publicity when there’s nothing else to talk about in the entertainment world.
Something can both be promotional and mutually beneficial. Just because Disney benefits, doesn’t mean they’re not also doing good for others.
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.
It may have been because they were trying to kill this story:
Thousands affected after Disney temporarily suspends college program
“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”
I hate Disney.
At least with George Lucas at the helm, I knew what I was getting at all times. There were never any illusions about that. And STILL even HE released the GOUT.
Disney is trying to pretend like the OUT doesn’t even exist. George didn’t gaslight us like that. He totally acknowledged it and was merely upfront in admitting that his new cuts were the real deal as far as he was concerned, and didn’t really care that many fans fell in love with the original cuts. But again, STILL he released the GOUT.
Somehow Disney has both managed to make films (at least in the case of TROS) that are WORSE and MORE insulting to the Star Wars universe than the prequels ever were, AND to be even worse than George when it comes to satisfying fans who grew up with the original theatrical cuts of the OT. This is a TRULY impressive feat, in the worst way imaginable.
I had such high hopes that they would be better than George after the initial sale – after all, it seemed like an easy opportunity for profit, and who doesn’t love profit more than Disney? – and yet they have managed to do the inconceivable and make the situation WORSE on all fronts than it was before.
This truly is the worst timeline.
What makes it even more insulting is that the whole world could literally be on the brink of its worst existential crisis in about a century or more, and yet these assholes can’t even give us the comfort of legally indulging in our preferred space fantasy escapism. Despite having every right and capability to do so.
Disney deserves to lose all the profit it’s losing right now. They have fundamentally misunderstood Star Wars and its appeal from day one – another failing George didn’t share despite his many others – and I am glad their pathetic attempt to make a theme park out of it crashed and burned. Too bad they employed “geniuses” who went out of their way to exclude every recognizable and beloved character or icon from the OT as much as possible in their design! Who could have possibly foreseen the outcome from that aside from oh, I don’t know, any random Star Wars fan they could have pulled off the street?
While Disney deserves this reckoning, Star Wars does not. That’s the real shame. Star Wars is likely going to enter a steep decline and never again have the multigenerational appeal it once did, all because of how atrociously Disney has botched their handling of the franchise they were entrusted with.

Yes, it is all about what kept it alive substituted for something that killed it off.
Bad decision after bad decision and wreckage.

No doubt there’ll be other ‘unboxing’ videos appearing soon - and hopefully in more detail; especially as to the bonus content - whether it is in 4K, HD or SD, as well as any surprises etc.
Edit: another couple of ‘unboxing’ type video for ‘The Skywalker Saga’ 4K / UHD box set:-

Thanks for the link. After watching that I cancelled my order. Yes, I know… it was probably foolish to order in the first place!
I look forward to the next versions of Harmy’s trilogy after he gets his hands on the 4K discs 😃

Apparently people are saying the bonus content is the same as the previous 1080p digital releases, though I’ve yet to see this confirmed completely anywhere.
If that’s really the case…like what the hell Disney? You’ve got so much behind the scenes footage as well as so many alternate takes and deleted scenes. You’d expect something far better for what’s supposedly the end of the original saga.

People try to argue this point all the time, but I personally don’t see how Disney has handled this issue any differently than George ever did.
George Lucas OFTEN tried to pretend that there was no other version of the films other than whatever his preferred version was at the time. No home video release after 1997 ever acknowledged that they contained anything other than the original films on the packaging, and if he could have gotten away with people not noticing or questioning any of the changes he made over the years, He would have probably preferred that. He only ever acknowledged the original versions when he was forced to. After 1997, He never openly or and willingly talked about any of the changes and if it weren’t for fans and interviewers constantly bringing the subject up he probably would have never acknowledged them ever again. The GOUT was not something he wanted to do, and was released primarily to stifle the bootleg market.
I definitely don’t think Disney has done the greatest job of handling the franchise for sure, but to say that they are any better or worse than George isn’t really fair. Disney/Lucasfilm are doing the exact same crap George had already been doing for years, probably somehow because of him still. They know the OUT exists, they know people want it, but whatever the reason may be they simply have no interest or intent to release it and have made that pretty clear.
Many people are getting their DMC copies early. Here’s hoping someone can confirm if the new Blu-rays of the OT feature the 2012 masters.

Many people are saying that across forums for people who have recieved there copies.
The new Blu-Rays don’t have the greatest selection of extras, it seems to have;

Doesn’t seem like its got too much worthwhile stuff, I thought they’d include Empire of Dreams in some capacity, maybe The Making of Star Wars or SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back, perhaps some featurettes or trailers but I mean its something I suppose.
EDIT: Glad to see that Classic Creatures got a feature on the Jedi BR, although in SD its very welcome

I can imagine it won’t clearly marked as such on the packaging either…

What?!! This makes no sense. Two versions available at the same time - and with no clear indicator of which version the customer is actually buying on the box?
(and also no official list on the diffrences between these two versions on the official website or other social media pages?)
If that is right then it really is treating the customer with contempt, a complete lack of respect, and also incredibly lazy not to advise us what is in each set beforehand.
Are they hoping that fans will buy both releases? A double-dip of sorts?
Which version is on the DVD format for this release? The 1997 Special Edition? (insert sarcasm emoji face here)
