Well, I had a vibe from the get-go that this wasn't going to be stellar in spite of every attempt to the contrary. First off, Hollywood so far has a great track record of adapting Alan Moore novels into crappy movies. From Hell was adequate at best, with Heather Graham's performance making you wish she'd return to fare like Boogie Nights and Austin Powers where her, ummm, talents are best put to use. LXG needs no further explanation. Hollywood just doesn't know how to adapt Alan Moore's graphic novels into watchable movies.

Second, Natalie went cueball for the role, and audiences are not kind to films where a popular actress goes bald for the part (unless she's playing a cancer victim). Look at Sigourney in Alien3 and Demi in G.I. Jane (from other acclaimed directors, to boot) for evidence to this. They shave for a noble reason, but it just turns the mainstream off.

Third and most revealing, moving a release date from a high-profile holiday release (November or December) to March (the month I've always referred to as "where bad movies go to die") smacks that all isn't well with this film. This was done in recent memory with The Time Machine, and (though, like "V" it is too soon to judge) the new version of The Pink Panther. Move a film from a high-profile month to a low-profile month means the writing is on the wall already and you're just trying to shift bad press to a quarter when it won't matter so much.

I could be totally wrong and time will tell, but my gut tells me they've screwed the pooch on this film.

The house had a cellar which went under the parliament building. They planned to put gunpowder under the house and blow up parliament and the king.

The king and his leaders were to meet on November 5.

Guy Fawkes was given the job to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder and to light the fuse, but he was discovered before he could blow up parliament. Guy Fawkes was put in prison and tortured until he told them the names of all the people involved in the Gunpowder Plot.

To celebrate the foiling of this early act of terrorism, we let off fireworks on November 5th.

To be fair, most people don't know that dates (I'm just into history and I have a wierd mind that remebers stuf like that and quotes from movies but I'll still forget my keys). But the general gist of it I thought most people would know, although I'm not in the least bit surprised that people in America aren't aware of historical events in other countries.

I have never heard of this, or if I have, it's been a long time and I don't remember it. An attempt to kill the king is normally something I remember.

Well, other than some atrocious special effects, I thought LXG was quite enjoyable.

I didn't realize it, but Alan Moore is responsible for Swamp Thing and Constantine as well. Two more movies whose reputation precedes them. Moore wouldn't even have his name on Constantine.

Hmm, I never knew that! How interesting. Clearly more world history needs to be taught in American schools.

I rather enjoyed that film.

(I though Constantine was watchable as well. )

Once I got past the fact that John Constantine was now a chain-smoking Angeleno instead of a chain-smoking Englishman, "Constantine" was pretty entertaining and fit the tone of the "Hellblazer" books I read several years ago. "LXG" (from the ADD-addled Fox marketers who brought you lazy-phrase titles like ID4 and X2) had potential, but just didn't work for me, either as a standalone movie or (especially) in comparison to the books. Quatermain was too much of a tough guy, Mina Murray lacking in mystery, and Tom Sawyer just unnecessary. The only thing the movie really nailed was Jeckyll and Hyde. Having Quatermain temporarily dead spoils some of the tension of Vol. 2; a zombie screwing a vampire just ain't the same as a still-mortal human getting it on with a bloodsucker.

clearly, we are not getting as well of a history education in this country as we should be. I'm going to have to take more history classes at a local community college or just find good books to read.

V for vendetta should be either a great film, or another catatrophic plop in the toilet. With the creators of the matrix doing it however, and natalie portman being in it i'm hoping it will be good. What I would really like to see would be luc besson make the prefessional 2 and natalie should star in that.
