I like the lava ring. Ideally, and this would be way out there for us, the action would be taking place within that circle. But even so, it’s a striking enough visual to plausibly be an establishing shot for an environment.

As much as I wish these shots could stay in the movie, I could only find them in like 720p, so they’re not nearly good enough to be used in the final film.

If help is needed on the computer graphics for the custom crawl, I’d be willing to help make one.

For example, I just made a mockup of what the proposed custom crawl (as of the first post) for this would look like on my setup.
http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/9B1CJNNU

(I put the TFA starfield in there for now. Also the comma in “master’s” is wrong but I’ll fix that for the real thing if I do make it.)

Currently my setup is really inefficient in terms of rendering times, but I will be very soon replacing it with custom software that’ll replicate the exact same look but far more efficient.

I hate JJ’s choice for the title font, with a passion. So I found and obtained the actual font that was used for ANH and ESB, and am using it for this mockup.

Looks good! Ridley did the crawls for my other edits, so if he’s willing I’d like to have him do a crawl for this one, too.

And don’t apologize for discussing the opening! I may not really be able yet to do much, but this thing is going to be extremely community-driven.

Yeah, that makes sense.

I forgot to mention that I can work on the end credits if help is needed on that too.

I’ve also done a decent amount of general VFX work as well (my primary thing is title/logo VFX though) so I can help out with any of the more difficult shots if needed. The big thing I suck at is coming up with story ideas for fan edits, and figuring out which shot to work on.

Really sorry about changing the subject AGAIN but a while back I heard about an idea floating around on TROS edit ideas thread.
Someone, not sure if it was Hal or someone else, but they suggeted that in order to make it more obvious that Rey becomes the physical embodiment of every single Jedi we could see the Jedi’s spirits become part of her and she could glow or some shit like that.

I tried to experiment with this, by using the distarcting Exogol strobe lights to my advantage, I made Rey have a subtle glow effect for a couple frames after we see some spirit-like elements surround her and pass through her. It comes across as a little cheesy but it’s an iteresting experiment nonetheless.

Here is my attempt at scoring the fight with Sam Kim’s cover, already done by Jar Jar Bricks. I’ve tried to time the music with the fight in a better way.

InitAbsolute, thanks for understanding. I’d say stand by and check in once in a while because I’m sure we will have ideas that may depend upon some FX work.

And, Chase, that’s pretty cool! It’s subtle. And almost for that reason alone, why not go with it?

It just doesn’t look like the Mustafar that has been established in canon.

I say put Kylo forest fight scene where the broom boy scene was in TLJ (after all, he is pissed off about Luke totally faking him out), cut to credits with Kylo holding the Holocron.

Episode 9 begins with kylo seeking and finding Palpatine. Or establish in the Crawl that he has already found him.

I liked having the music swell up when Kylo appears out of the water but otherwise that looked good.

I won’t lie, it worked well during that moment too.

That’s actually how they did it in the original too. There’s no music until Kylo comes out of the water

Yeah, I know, I just tried it in a slightly different way to see another way it could work. Not to mention, it was near the end of the cover. I had to extend parts of the cover to fit well with the visuals, and based on that, I didn’t know if I had anymore room to extend without the music sounding too abrupt.

I hope this doesn’t sound in poor taste, but do you think using footage of forest fire aftermaths to bring us to Mustafar in the opening could work?

I literally can’t tell the difference.

As for rescoring the fight, I swear Finn’s part in that scene is cringier every time. He deserves so much better. Cut him from that scene entirely. He should not be aboard the Death Star. What is he hoping to accomplish? Rey’s beaten Kylo before. She can handle herself.

I could try a concept clip of how the opening could go. I’ve been thinking about it, and I’m not sure if using those two shots of Ben in the bridge from the deleted scene from The Last Jedi would work and would probably feel even more abrupt to cut from him on the ship to him in action on ground.

I think we can keep looking for more footage of ash filled forests and lava, but I think using the opening shot of Mustafar from Rogue One with some color correction and VFX work to remove Krennic’s ship can work.

I’ve also noticed from listening to the soundtrack that some pieces of John Williams’ music were not in the movie and the soundtrack features extended score. Listen to the opening track.

You could be a little more polite. 😕
It happens right after Rey grabs Leia’s lightsaber.
You see some spirit elements pass into her, then she glows and turns blue for a couple frames.

I admit I didn’t notice the change at first either. I think it’s because it was a minute-long clip and I didn’t know where the change was (and it’s a movie I’ve only seen a couple of times at this point). That’s actually a good sign, though, because it means it didn’t look edited.

Now that I see it, it’s cool and subtle! Maybe you could try going a little further so we get more of a sense of what’s happening? 1-2 more spirits flying in? Maybe her eyes could very subtly cycle through a few familiar pairs of eyes? That might be too much, just throwing out ideas!

Edit: not sure about my eyes idea, that’s too silly. but I think the glow could be a little brighter (maybe using an “add” blending mode). Right now it’s more of a blur than a glow to me.

Very cool. Love the new shot of Ochi.
Also, at 1:57, look behind BB-8! It’s the Bad Robot robot! I should have assumed that JJ would put that in there somewhere! 😄

Edit:
Oh, wow. Poppasketti has given me feedback! 😃 Can I just say man that your VFX work on TLJ Rekindled is mind-blowingly good. I wouldn’t have even had the effort to do any of my own edits had I not seen yours!

I had the same thoughts and had to look at it. I like subtle things like this. I agree with Poppa’s suggestion to make it a little brighter with a more glow. But, still keep it quick like how it is. We don’t need “BAM IN YOUR FACE REY GLOWS NOW YA’LL!” Just a little brighter with a bit more of a glow blending filter or whatever and you go it good to go.

Maybe we can see quick flashes of the force ghosts with each light flare that appears behind Rey.

That would be hard to do in a convincing way, what Chase has done is certainly a more feasible and pretty seamlessly done.

Granted people can try it … but I can personally see attempts at it being more “clumsy” in comparison to this.

LOL, I am already not a fan of the whole “I am all the sith” and “I am all the Jedi” approach Abrams did. But that’s a discussion for a different thread, lol.

Not really trying to start a discussion on the ideas behind those lines, but I wonder if you cut out Rey’s “And I…” dramatic pause might help improve the moment a little.
