I don’t think it’s any more “open ended” than the original ending.
What it does do is end the film on a more serious, reflective & emotional scene than the Ewok boogie.
I couldn’t care any less how it ties in to the ST, It’s just a better fitting end to the trilogy.
You miss understand. Its not that I don’t like the idea of ending the trilogy on the pyre scene, it sounded great when i heard it. And I to have no love left for ST, but I know there are some who do, and I was simply respecting that in my reasoning. But an added note you have I’m not sure if that scene would work, it may not feel organic if it is incorporated, and the cinematography may not match that of the rest of ROTJ. But it was an idea I thought I’d share.
Also I might note that “serious, reflective & emotional” ending was already used on ESBR, and is intended as a foreshadowing of sorts for the unknown struggles to come. But that only works if you are going to follow it up with ST content, which is something I am willing to bet a lot (though not all) will not be doing.
However, the Luke/Leia scene could work for both sides of that equation.
