This is probably the most commonly asked (and irritating) question, but is anyone involved with X0 willing to venture a wild ballpark guess as to when this transfer will be completed. Having gotten as far as you guys have what kind of number would you throw out there as an edjucated guess for sh#*ts and giggles. Sorry to ask what is likely the most irritating question to those involved, I just went through the entire XO website and now I am officialy obsessed.

Realistically, several months at least. Sorry.

Honestly following this thread and keeping up with the doings on the X0 site I would've thought you guys are more than a year away from completion...

I already posted this, but at first it didn't stick - I dunno why. So here I go again, but it will be a short form of the original post.

1) If DVDs look awful on your HDTV then you had better invest in a decent scaler. DVD can look very very good on a decent HD set, but it needs to be scaled properly. If you are relying on the scaler that is built into your HDTV set, chances are it is pretty awful. If you see blocking and EE and other artefacts, then I will lay money on it being an average DVD player coupled with the very ordinary scaler built into your HDTV.

Go to a *decent* AV store and check out a terranex scaler running DVD on a hidef set, and I think your concerns about DVD looking bad on HD sets will disappear. Through a terranex scaler DVD on HDTV looks absolutely stunning.
If you can't afford a terranex, check out the DVDO ISCAN HD, it does an amazing job for the money. With on, especially if running SDI from a good DVD player, you will not see any blocking or artefacts.
If you aren't running a decent scaler with your HDTV set, you are really wasting the money you spent on the set.

To answer the other question, a HD version of any OT transfer is a must if you want it to look good on a HDTV and you *don't* have a good scaler.
The people doing the transfer could do a much better job of scaling up the video - even the paltry 277 available lines - than the awful internal scaler inside your HDTV. That way you could feed the TV a 'pre scaled' image that is now in native HDTV resolution.
I personally will need a 720P version for my particular setup to look as good as possible.

Oh, and BTW artguy, the difference between DVD scaled well and HD-DVD isn't the jump that VHS to DVD was, you can see the comparison right now if you want - go grab a D-Theater player (DVHS) which is actually higher quality than either of the proposed HD DVD standards (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray).
The D-Theater titles are noticable better, especially a title like I-Robot. The difference between it on DVD on a standard TV and the D-Theater title on a HDTV is very pronounced, but the difference between the DVD through a terranex on a HDTV and the D-Theater title through a HDTV is more subtle than stunning.

Could I just send money to an address, instead of using Paypal. I am asking this, as I am only 13 and cannot set up a Paypal account.
Rock. Nirvana. Awsomeness.

If you e-mail zion or drop some feedback at the x0project.com site I'm sure Zion could help you out.

It sounds like things are hotting up on the X0 front.

Is it possible to get an update like you sent out previously?
Unfortunately I subscribed to the X0 list too late and did not get this first one.

Alternatively listing the update/s on the X0 webpage could also be useful.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. Things have slowed down, but we're definitely still hard at work.

Coming this week:

- The first of a few new articles on the web site
- The second issue of the newsletter
- A new screenshot or two (time permitting)

As of late I'm working on a new backend for the web site: A way to make the site more interactive and allow for quicker and more frequent updates. (Did someone say wiki?)

At long last, my donation has been made. Unfortunately, it isn't as nearly as large as I'd like it to be, so perhaps I can try to donate on a per month basis or something, heh.

I am going to donate $20 soon. I wish it could be more, but I am broke, currently.

Let me jump in as well.

DVDs can look very nice on a HD set. I have a 65" 16:9 set that has been ISF calibrated and I also own a true 720p projector (Infocus 7200) with a 119" 16:9 screen.

Make sure you have at least a good progressive DVD player if you are watching any DVD on a HD set. It does make a difference.

Better than that, there are some players that upscale the DVD to 720p or 1080i. They look even better than progressive players. Bravo D1 is an example.

Going from DVD to HD on a smaller set (65" or so) is not that big of a jump. However, you can see BIG differences going from DVD resolution to something that is in native HD on large screen projector set ups. I actually now have a HTPC array of hard drives with over 2 terabytes of storage...just for HD material. Got to love newsgroups!

Scalers do work but anything that is native HD will always look better.

I noticed a big difference between Mother's DVDs and all other ones that were released as well. Why? His has more resolution since it was from a PAL source. Scalers and Progressive players can only do so much.

It's all about the source.

You really oughta go check out a terranex scaler if you get the chance, it will blow your mind.

It is true tha 'all other things being equal' that a native HD transfer will outperform a DVD transfer, but all other things are rarely equal.
For instance the T2 extreme DVD (and I mean the DVD part of it, not the HD WMV version) looks better at DVD resolution that the HDTV D-Theater release of T2 because it came from a better master.

The source film print and the skill of the telecine operator and the quality of their equipment is of first importance, a well done DVD can look better than a poorly done HD transfer.

Some other cheap scaling DVD players to check out are the momitsu V880N, the Skyworth (later models only - the earlier ones were awful) which can do almost any resolution up to 1080i, and the neuneo player (which upscales to 1080P), but none of them , including the Bravo can hold a candle to a terranex, or even a lowly Iscan HD running via SDI from the player. (Although you won't be getting optimum results with that projector, especially on the space scenes due to its poor black levels.) The newer 1080P panel projectors do a great job, or of course the CRTs like the cine9 and G90 still look magnificient.

At any rate, if DVDs look awful on anyones hidef display device, the problem is with the scaling, so go get a decent scaler.

It will be interesting to see if there is a blu-ray release of the SW films now that Fox has sided with that camp.

probably the WRONG forum/thread to be posting this in. . .but what about some of the more common DVD players (samsung, sony, pioneer, etc). Are there any of those that are a) inexpensive b) progressive scan c) upconvert to 1080i over HDMI and d) play PAL or NTSC (in my case I'm in the U.S. and want to play PAL and NTSC discs on an a 19:9 DLP HDTV)

like i said. . .wrong forum. . .but we were on the subject of upscaling. . .and that's what i'm looking for!

I live about 2 hours from Zion, and hes got an open invitation to come visit me, where he can try his product on some of my cool toys. I work in a high end hi fi shop, so he can try his discs on plasmas, DLP projectors, and terranex equipped DVD players. The Denon 5910 is equipped with a variation of the terranex processing. IMO, its the best PQ from any DVD player Ive seen.

Sorry to bother you guys with such a stupid question but what is the E.T.A. on those X0 t-shirts, those things are sweet.

I have one left of those first-run T-shirts pictured on the web site. It is XL and probably the last of that design you'll ever see. If you are interested, PM me for pricing details.

On that note, sorry for the delay in updates. My work on the new site backend and my NFL fantasy draft this weekend have taken all my free time away from me. That and the Broncos-Colts game last night.
