The main issue with have Kylo be the killer of her parents doesn’t really help with anything in my mind personally.

His goal is to have Rey on his side. Would using the direction of “Oh yeah, I killed Han Solo, my father who you liked. Also, I tried to kill Luke Skywalker … but too bad he was a Force Hologram. Oh yeah, I killed your parents too. Wanna join me and make out?”

I just … don’t see how that helps with anything with whatever motivation the route a person wants to go.

I was about to post the same thing. I’m not sure what is gained by the idea.

Don’t get me wrong krausfadr, if I had to pick between “Rey Palpatine” and “I killed your parents”, I would still vote for your idea!

Every alternative to Rey Palpatine is going to have issues, and I think it is worth pointing out what the issues might have to be addressed to get it to possibly work. Like, if Kylo is going to admit he killed her parents, you have to decide why he decides to tell her the truth now, how does her knowing the truth benefit him and his goals. Does Kylo admit it with regret? Does he confess once he realizes Palpatine has been manipulating him all along?

I was originally thinking that a vision of the future could be what drives Rey to want to personally kill Palpatine. Maybe Rey and Kylo both have visions that Rey, and the Resistance, are going to fail. She could have a vision that the Emperor will kill Poe and Finn, her new family. The vision could show flashes of the battle, lightning coming from below. We could use the shot of Snap’s X-Wing crashing to show Poe dying in the vision. Then create a shot of Finn on the Star Destroyer as it explodes in mid-air.

Kylo Ren could tell her, “You will fail, Rey. Your friends will all die. We can only defeat him together. Join me.”

This vision would be what makes Rey want to personally kill Palpatine.

EDIT: I know it’s a joke but mad libs is an accurate description of what we’ll be basically doing to Kylo’s dialogue for this movie. 😂

Agreed, any alternative to Rey Palpatine needs to push her character forward.
While we are on character motivations I think we need to address the prelude to the duel on the deathstar, specifically Rey’s motivations for attacking Kylo, getting angry at kylo for braking the wayfinder does not substantiate a fight to the death in a drawn out, rage filled “final duel”, the duel needs more substance behind it, kylo revealing to Rey that he killed her parents on the deathstar would warrant such a response but how to go about that is a different story and lets not forget the prospect for any romance between them would go straight out the window.

Yeah one thing I would like to add is helmeted Kylo saying (prior to his admission): “Everything I’ve ever done Rey, looking back. I don’t know if it was me or Palpatine pushing me.”

Kylo tells her they (her parents) were garbage so he got rid of them because he wants the dark side of her personality to be grateful to him. Also if she gets angry with the Emperor over it she will be motivated to help him get rid of Palpatine.

Also Kylo would advise Rey that her parents sold her out and told him where she was. When he found her he decided not to kill her.

If Rey believes Palpatine will kill her friends, and Kylo Ren destroys her key to finding Palpatine and killing him, it could be enough to warrant her anger.

Basically you’re just changing “Palpatine killed your old family” to “Palpatine will kill your new family”, so if you feel like Rey doesn’t have enough motivation to attack Kylo in that moment, then it is just a problem with the theatrical film.

I’ve had some other ideas, like maybe Rey has vision that Kylo will be the one that will kill her friends, which is why she wants to kill Kylo, and maybe Kylo is trying to tell her that Palpatine is wanting tricking her, wanting to turn them against one another.

Or, maybe Rey’s vision is that she will kill her friends. Maybe in the first vision, she just sees the lightning, but doesn’t see Palpatine. But then during her Death Star vision, she realizes it was her who created the lightning (her lightning on Pasana could foreshadow this). Maybe in the vision she is on/next to the throne with Kylo, so she feels Kylo is part of the reason why she turns to the dark side in her vision. So if she kills Kylo, the vision won’t come true.

So, basically Rey has a vision that her friends will die by Palpatine. But Kylo also has a vision of Rey and Kylo Ren killing Palpatine and ruling together. But on the Death Star, we discover this is the same future, and it is actually Dark Rey that kills her friends in the final battle.

Just brainstorming right now.

Krausfadr, regarding your idea:

So basically, Snoke/Palpatine senses her future as a potential threat, and ordered to have her killed. Kylo went to complete this task, found the parents and they gave her up immediately. Kylo, I’m assuming, sympathized with her abandonment, so he killed her parents and left her on Jakku. Is that correct?

Yes and Kylo also felt a connection with her beyond just her abandonment. Or the order could also have been to bring Rey before Snoke/Palpatine as she was a possible better apprentice than Kylo.

Can we make this its own thread, please? It’s fantastic.

It might be hard to shape the right dialogue (you should look into those voice emulator AI programs, I know there are open source versions of it, or find a good Adam Driver impressionist maybe), but maybe the Knights of Ren were tasked by Snoke to hunt down various potential Force-sensitives and eliminate them (maybe that’s why we haven’t seen the Knights in the past two films). Kylo specifically was sent to Jakku.

If you have trouble making it to where Kylo kills her parents himself, maybe Ochi was a servant of Snoke, and Kylo ordered Ochi to kill them, and then he killed Ochi and left him on Pasaana. You could create a shot where helmeted Kylo is on the ship with them. That way you can keep the connections with Ochi, the dagger, and her parents, but still make it related to Kylo Ren.

I think Dom’s idea was similar to this, minus Kylo’s involvement. Rey’s a nobody, but Palpatine sensed her future and orders her killed. The one benefit to your idea is that it still frames Rey’s parents as shitty people who didn’t die to protect her, and it gives a good reason as to why Ochi couldn’t find Rey.

The one downside is this would mean Ben Solo has been Kylo Ren for at least 10-12 years, and he would have to have turned when he was a teenager. But I guess nothing in the films really gives a definite timeline on the history of anything, besides how old people look in flashbacks.

Maybe the flashback from TFA with the knights of ren could be used when kylo reveals that he killed rey’s parents, like in Trevorrows script

Sorry to bring this up again, but I think this is exactly it: Rey’s motivation to fight Kylo and the FO and eventually kill Palpatine is all about protecting her new family and her newly found purpose of life:

An insignificant scavenger, abandoned by her insignificant and absolutely uninteresting parents for drinking-money on a (somehow not so insignificant) planet, unexpectedly gets pulled into an adventure (-> beginning of the classic hero’s journey as we know it from Star Wars). Up to that point, she has neither a family, community, belonging nor purpose, but all of a sudden she is in the middle of a galactic-wide conflict (plus, the force is awakening in her). She gets introduced to this world she has only heard of in stories (or learned from through stuffed puppets of rebellion pilots) and connects with it (namely with the “good guys” that is the Resistance). End of the first act (the so called “exposition”)/Ep7.

She then begins to struggle with her role as she gets confronted with the reality of her new world. Her somewhat naïve views of the force, Jedi and Sith, good and evil getting put to a test.
Eventually, the second act (“Complication”; Ep8) is perfectly concluded with this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co3QrHKcV9c) scene: Rey introduces herself to Poe, who answers that he already knows her. She at last is somebody, part of something, finally has a “family”. Something to fight for as well as something to fight against. Credits roll.

Then the third act (Ep9) happens, which is supposed to be the climax, dénouement and ultimately the resolution. The structural tendency of TROS to sort of contradict TLJ, at least in one major point (and that is Rey’s ancestry), is what needs to be addressed: make it clear that Rey is fighting for what she accomplished in the previous movies, and that is an identity of her own that is solely based on her role in this adventure of hers (as sort of an unwritten page) and not on blood and cloned Sithlord-Sons and not on parents she can’t even remember, because what cause should she have to stand up in their names?

Rey’s parents really shouldn’t matter. They sold her for drinking-money, and as far as I’m concerned, they can just as well already have died of liver cirrhosis or something. Somewhere, sometime. Doesn’t matter.

Well said ^

Now, according to the novelization, Rey’s father was a failed clone of Palps body which Palps conciousness rejected when he was thrown down the shaft of the DSII by Vader. The failed clone lived on to make a life of his own, hooked up and Rey was born. So now things are just getting super weird and convaluted.

The less we hear about Rey parents in Ep9 the better. Best to continue with the TLJ plot line and keep Rey Nobody and deadbeat parents as is. IMO the whole Rey and Palpatine grandkid dynamic just doesn’t work. I understand what they were going for, but the execution of it was a failure.

Rey’s natural inclination towards the darkside and its Ramifications on her character and the plot need to be adressed. I always thought it would be interesting if we found out that she killed her parents the same way she “killed” chewie, maybe she was born with the darkside and her parents hated her for it, they decide to sell her to unkarr and leave the planet but in her rage she force electrocutes the ship, she becomes so traumatised that she locks those memories away, in TROS we see her true nature unravel as the film progresses until we reach the climax where she must make the ultimate choice.

That’s a good idea too. Rey killed her parents. We see Rey’s visions of her friends dying. First Kylo tells her he buried her parents bodies on Jakku. She interprets this as he murdered them. He later reveals she’s the one who killed her parents. We then see Rey’s future visions again of her friends dying but this time see her as a Sith. In other words she will be responsible for their deaths.

I find that really interesting, and I think it’s the best way to remove the Rey Palpatine plot point while keeping her character arc.
Above all, I think that’s also manageable, with some alternate cuts between her Force pulling the FO ship and her Jakku’s flashbacks.

It’d sync especially nicely with the shot we see of them flying away. Technically near-impossible maybe, but it’d be great to see her pull their shuttle out of the sky (with lightning) in the same way she tries to grab the shuttle Chewie’s in.

I would handle it that Ray was so upset with them leaving/wanting them to come back she force crashes the ship. This could be accomplished with a fade to black or another scene with the right sound effect of a crashing ship.

All we really need is a quick flash of young Rey screaming - ochi’s ship leaving followed by bolts of lightning - fade to black and explosion sound.
