Who knows. My guess is they probably figure there’s more people watching regular television than home video so showing the black bars at the top and bottom might be distracting. It’s no different than the 4:3 days of cropping. Is it necessary now considering the bars are smaller on films like Star Wars with 16:9 TVs? No but again I’m not expert so I’m not sure.
