God, I hope so.

Thinking more on how to end the political situation, I really do feel that if you make an edit where Ben Solo lives, you have to find a way to imply reunification between the First Order and the Resistance into a new, New Republic, or whatever. The First Order should see Ben Solo as Supreme Leader regardless if he has turned to the light, unless their entire leadership revolts. Sure, General Pryde takes over at least one Resurgent and the Sith Fleet at the end, but there is no indication that he now controls the entire First Order.

If Ben Solo lives, I think it is logical that he would use his authority to make the First Order surrender. I’ve mentioned this several times, I think this idea of “healing wounds” could be seen as a central theme of Episode IX, so healing the wound of Republic by uniting the two sides feels like a natural progression of that idea.

So the first idea that pops into my mind is that you could alter the Star Destroyer montage at the end so that the ships are leaving the occupied worlds rather than crashing down. And we don’t really see what is causing these ships to crash (we see one ship is kamikazed, but that’s it). So you could keep that same montage, but have the ships fly away and have some kind of VO of a First Order officer saying that they have orders to surrender straight from the Supreme Leader himself.

I mentioned earlier the idea about having the Tantive IV fly to Coruscant in the epilogue. Maybe we could see Star Destroyer’s in orbit of Coruscant, but now they could have blue stripes and the New Republic insignia on their hulls, similar to the Venators in the Clone Wars. Now, I do think you can make the argument that the Imperial/First Order iconography needs to be purged if the war is over, but I do think their needs to be some kind of visual symbolism of synthesis, or the integration of the shadow. I feel emphasizing this kind of conclusion would differentiate the conclusion of this trilogy from the ending of ROTJ, where they just blow the enemy up. This war could end peacefully, and Ben Solo, if he is alive, could do that.
