Help: looking for... Fantasia (original 1940 general release version)

I have PM’d a few folks about this but have not had much luck:

I am looking for a scan of the original 1940 general release version of Fantasia (NOT the “restored” reconstructed censored roadshow version with contemporary overdubs that is available on bluray). Does such a thing exist in reasonable quality and if so could anyone PM me with a link as where to obtain it?

No it doesn’t. It’d be very hard to find a print of that version in private hands, and it would be nitrate.

That is a bummer. How about an upscaled version of the restored 1990 LD/VHS release? I still have the LD but no longer have anything to play it on.

Does the seller actually claim it’s a 1940 print? To me it looks like “1940” refers to the original theatrical release of Fantasia. If the seller had been aware of the many different versions of the movie, he would have pointed out in the listing which version he’s selling.

i asked him and he said 1940

Fantasia got a huge theatrical rerelease in 1990, I would think some of those prints would be in “circulation.”

Really, all I would like is an HD copy of the film that hasn’t been DNRd to heck and back and without crappy Deems Taylor overdubs. The 1990 version is fine for that purpose, even if it is still censored

Well it does seem to have the RKO Radio Pictures logo so that dates it somewhat early.

I happened to be the one who bought this print much earlier this year. It had some pretty bad vinegar syndrome, almost all of the color was gone, and it was most certainly not a “1940 print.” It was a reprint of the general release version from the late 40s. Promptly returned it.

It’s worth noting that foreign releases like the original German DVD appear to be built around the 1990 restoration and have the 1947 interstitial footage in 576i (the animated footage coming from the 2000 master). The Deems Taylor intro, as per most foreign, versions is not included, however.

Screenshots from an .avi of the German DVD I downloaded:

OFDb also says the Australian DVD has a 114 minute runtime (117 @ NTSC): https://ssl.ofdb.de/view.php?page=fassung&fid=9609&vid=83007

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

Fantasia is scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray as part of Disney’s Signature Collection sometime this year. It doesn’t matter if the Pastoral Symphony segment is censored, as I plan to do my own reconstruction of the original roadshow version of the movie. All I’m hoping for this release is that it includes the original Deems Taylor monologues, which I hope has been re-discovered by now.

On myspleen there’s actually a full 60GB release of the CAV LD. Be cool if someone put the censored bits back.

I’m pretty sure that’s just the 1990 re-release.

It is. But it’s the closest any home release has come to the original.
