Moderator Edit: the ‘High Republic Era’ has now been confirmed to be a publishing project (both books and comics - and was previously known as ‘Project Luminous’).

And also in V.I.N.Cent’s thread on it here:-

‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ era publishing project (aka ‘Project Luminous’) - in the ‘The Expanded Universe’ section of the site.

Isn’t that a time of peace? I wish they tackled The Old Republic.

Another article with lots of ifs and unconfirmed.
However, whether or not it’s true, it does bring up the story taking place ~400 years before the main films. This part I’d welcome over the Old Republic timeline where it took place like ~4,000 years prior. The technology seemed oddly recent enough to fit in a timespan of a few hundred years, not thousands.

When was the Jedi war against the Mandalorians? That’d seem like the most obvious next move to me.

In legends, it was ~4,000 years before the Battle of Yavin.

Exciting! A bit disappointed we’re stuck in the Rule of Two, but I actually approve the decision to take place not too far beyond TPM. Seeing the galaxy in nearly the same spot thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga was a quirk that always irritated me. So this sounds like a unique adaption of the Old Republic!

Also looks like they’ll be headed the MCU direction with a series of inter-connected films telling one story arc. Tbh, I think this is a better model than trilogies because it gives us more time with the characters. So count me aboard the hype train!

Problem is, In Canon the Republic was established after the destruction of the Sith one thousand years before TPM.

“I will not let this Republic that had stood for a thousand years be split in two”
“The sith have been extinct for a millennia”

Not as if that doesn’t contradict previously established continuity in its own right (“For a thousand generations, the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic.”). And Disney regards continuity more as guidelines than actual rules, anyway.

The republic was established a 1000 years before TPM.
“There hasn’t been a full-scale war since the formation of the Republic”-AOTC
This new series of movies starts 400 years before TPM

Where is the “war” in this Star War?

PS: pardon my pessimism.

I’m definitely interested but not what I would do.

I prefer to go forward, not back. If they want to go back, go so far back that no one alive has any immediate bearing on the events we already know. Don’t be afraid to distance yourself from established characters.

Rian Johnson’s idea of a Star Wars trilogy completely separate from everything we know is the best idea I’ve heard. I hope he eventually get to make it.

Wasn’t the republic established 1000 generations (roughly 20,000 years) before A New Hope? I guess that would mean KOTOR technically creates a continuity error, as it depicts full scale wars 4000 years before Episode 1.

“for over a thousand generations the jedi knights were the guardians of piece and justice in the old Republic.”
It does seem to imply that the Republic lived that long but according to Canon and EU that is not the case.

Putting PT script errors with timescales aside, there are only a few options they’re likely to go with. The true Old Republic era is too weird and detached from the mainstream audience view of Star Wars. Add to this any random scripts they have lying around, which of them is likely to be a safe bet? The origins of Yoda? More Palpatine?

Characters like The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda are interesting because even though they happen in the past (relative to the most recent movies) I have no idea what will happen to them. Will they live or die? The same with the rumored sequel series to Rebels. I have no idea what happens to Ezra, Sabine, or Ahsoka. But when you go to the past and bring along characters like the original Yoda, I’m not going to be too concerned about any danger he is in, or temptation he has. I already know his story. The same with the Obi-Wan series.

Don’t get me wrong, I am interested in seeing both, and the upcoming season 7 of The Clone Wars, but I’d really like it if they put more resources to telling me all new stories with all new characters that I have no idea what will happen to them. Or at least continue a known character’s story that I don’t know the outcome of.

According to EU, the republic had been around for more than 1000 years. KOTOR is 4000 years BBY.

Just checked again and you are right, it’s pretty confusing, George approved KOTOR being made even though it contradicts his head Canon.

The whole concept of “The Republic” lasting even over a thousand years at peace is frankly ridiculous at an intergalactic setting. There are so many people, so many ideologies, so many changes to culture with such scale. I could buy it if the Republic has fought a large-scale conflict every hundred years or so, resetting the public consciousness in favor of the government, but even then “a thousand generations” is all too silly.

I’d agree to see a younger Yoda could backfire, but if keep him one of many other characters it should work. He might never be in danger but those around him will. Yoda has never revealed much about his past, so anyone besides him in this new era can be killed.

There’s no reason there has to be peace for a thousand generations. Ben just says the Jedi were the guardians of peace in that time.

Palpatine in AOTC says the Republic has stood for a thousand years. Potentially a discrepancy between that and Ben’s line, but you could explain it. Either way neither of them says there was no war at all for that long.
