Have you thought about adding Ben next to Luke and Leia at the end? It’s possible to do something like what George Lucas did to add Hayden at the end of Return of the Jedi. Take footage of Adam Driver and paste his head onto a double in front of a green screen wearing Jedi robes. Just a suggestion, but it may not work out.

On it’s own adding force ghost Ben with Luke and Leia is nice. BUUUUT with all the reverses: Chewie is dead, just kidding. C3P0 lost his memory, just kidding. Kylo got stabbed, just kidding. Ben fell down a pit, just kidding. Rey died, just kidding. Ben died for real… oh now he’s a force ghost. FML.

heil Palpatine!

I mean, him being a force ghost wouldn’t be a reversal. We know that’s what happen to Jedi, and he disappeared just like Ben, Yoda, Luke, and Leia, all of whom became ghosts. His omission at the end feels somewhat glaring.

It immediately stops the devastating impact of Rey’s loss and separation from Ben. Emotional reversals. Sometimes things are bittersweet.

I mean, he’s still dead. Considering the film doesn’t take any time to reflect on said loss, I’d say having him as a ghost is the only way to reconcile with the relatively chipper attitude towards his death.

I have an alteration you could consider. Why not bring back the Emperor as a Force ghost and drain the life force of Rey and Ben to come back in the flesh in the movie’s third act? It was an idea inspired by an original draft from Return Of The Jedi, where Obi-Wan and Anakin came back in the flesh. However, it would be a power only the Sith knows how to use.

Hey Hal, have you ever considered renaming your ST edits?

I love how your PT edits use the novel names from the in between books.
It’s an nice reference, and honestly they seem to fit better.

I was thinking, now that we’ve seen the whole trilogy,
that it might be cool if you did the same using the Zahn Thrawn titles.

Episode 7
Heir to the Empire

Episode 8
Dark Force Rising
(yes, Kerr used it for his #3, but I don’t think it’d go over badly)

Episode 9
The Last Command

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

I think the ST titles are pretty good and fit their respective stories. Even other films reference these.

“Leading then to the last Jedi…”
“Something inside me has always been there, and now it’s awake.” Etc.

The Thrawn titles fit fine, too, but I really don’t feel the need to change titles.

Also a suggestion: Maybe add Palpatine’s laugh somewhere in Rey’s force vision in Episode VII. It might be too on the nose but it could be cool if you heard it when we see Rey’s parents leaving her on Jakku.

I was thinking of something similar for my TFA edit, it’s also a little too on the nose but it could work if done right.

I thought that I could add Palpatine’s line:
“Once more the Sith will rule the galaxy!” from RotS into Rey’s vision.

Since at that point in the timeline Palpatine was preparing his return and the Sith ruling the galaxy once again.

Just a thought.

Just a suggestion, but do you think you’ll remove the reveal of Rey being Palpatine’s granddaughter at this point? I know that there are moments in the film that play towards this narrative, but they (like Palpatine offering her the rank as Empress) can still be kept in with an altering viewpoint and motivation.

He could offer her the throne knowing how powerful in the Force she is and ordered for her and her parents to be killed knowing her raw power that could potentially be a threat to him.

Her being his granddaughter does raise so many unanswered questions, especially who and when did Palpatine married to have a son. I’ve always liked the aspect of Rey being a nobody and rising (no pun intended) to become somebody worth of recognition. Even the ending of her doning the name Skywalker would make things even stronger without her being related to the Emperor.

I wish that angle was never put to film, but I’m not sure I want to go that route. We’ll see but I expect that won’t change.

I agree, i despise Rey being a palpatine and TROS with all my heart, but i’m sure that every other fan edit out there is going to take that out, i’m looking forward to your fan edit to see if you can make a good film of TROS for what it is.

Edit: It looks like the art of TROS is out there, it could help us to see the intention behind some of the decisions and what some cut scenes could be.

I understand. I too am also someone who prefers sticking true to route. It’s even more difficult to do that with the Sequels now that they’re following the Original Trilogy. It was much easier for the Prequels because they preceded the Original Trilogy and were made afterwards. So it’s much easier for us to make changes to strengthen the continuity with the original three films.

Continuity can be fixed with the Sequels, but something tells me that J.J. Abrams changed Rey’s origin for this film, knowing how much backlash was given from her being a nobody in The Last Jedi, so he changed his original plan to satisfy the fans. I also don’t believe his word that Palpatine was always planned from the start of the trilogy, but that’s a discussion for another thread.

There has been an awakening

…leading them to the last Jedi. If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi
will rise.

I think this score would fit perfectly into the rey and kylo Ren fight on the second death star. I hated how there was no big score it was just the waves crashing by. It needed its own Orginal score but this is a good compromise.

I’m sure Williams recorded something for that sequence but it’s probably sitting somewhere in the cutting room.

I would absolutely love if this was included. At least until Rey starts getting worn out and the fight slows down.

I’ll keep it in mind. Hard to forecast something nuanced like that. It often depends on things I won’t be able to assess until I’ve got the video and surround sound audio in front of me to pick at.

While John Williams has been a consistent architect of music for these films I think that some of these sequences would be better served with no music, just the fight and the sounds of the world around them. Sometimes less is more. Rise of the Skywalker is the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom of this franchise, it needs to be allowed to breathe more than it was. Aside from Rey Palpatine it’s alright, if it wasn’t a rollercoaster and more of a story it would be a better watch.
