Problem is, In Canon the Republic was established after the destruction of the Sith one thousand years before TPM.
“I will not let this Republic that had stood for a thousand years be split in two”
Not as if that doesn’t contradict previously established continuity in its own right (“For a thousand generations, the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic.”). And Disney regards continuity more as guidelines than actual rules, anyway.
