Rumor: COUNTDOWN to 'The Rise of Skywalker' - EXTENDED CUT...

This thread is where we speculate on if/how/when we may eventually see a director’s cut or otherwise extended/“ultimate” edition of Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.

With rumors of multiple cuts including a missing 20 minutes, along with the current backlash over the movie feeling rushed and confused to many (at least a messy edit to put it politely), I wonder if Disney would attempt to go full Blade Runner/SnyderCut here and try to release a non theatrical version of the film as penance for damage control. How likely do any of you feel this might happen? Would they go there?

As a courtesy to fellow members, when linking to youtube videos or articles etc, please give both the title and source to which you are linking to - thank you.

I hate fan petitions but I wouldn’t mind for there to be a politely written petition to show an interest in an extended cut, or several deleted scenes at least.

I don’t think it’s JJ’s style, but I guess we can hope.

I really hope we get an extended cut (fanmade, official or otherwise); not necessarily featuring deleted scenes, but rather extended versions of the scenes/sequences we already have (especially in the first act).

The pace of the film was already at breakneck speed; a cut with more room to breath in between various points would be such an improvement.

I think JJ is on the record as not liking the idea of director’s cuts in principle. I wouldn’t hate for him to change his mind, though; I think this film could probably be improved a good deal just by adding some breathing room.

Weren’t the recent Marvel movies re-released in theater with an extended cut, just a few months after their first release? I can totally see Disney / Lucasfilm trying the same thing here…

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

I would welcome an extended edition as it is obvious (to me) that there was a lot of editing for run time that could flesh out some plotlines.

I bet the closest we get to deleted scenes in any usable fashion will actually be the Art Of book.

I’d absolutely love it but I don’t see it coming from the squeaky clean JJ Abrams/Disney machine. Compare the TFA and TLJ documentaries and deleted scenes; Rian’s film is a lot more open about the production than JJ’s first was, and I imagine TROS will follow in TFA’s footsteps. I doubt they’d want to reveal any vulnerability or risk having to admit that they may have gone too far in a few places with the editing, especially as this movie was somewhat rushed and it’d open them up to criticism for pumping out the last Skywalker saga film in an unpolished state to meet a deadline. Seems more likely they’ll just push out a 4K Bluray set of the theatrical version and move on. Or even worse, they’ll think to themselves “Gee, don’t Star Wars fans hate it when the movies get changed?” and use that to justify only ever releasing what I essentially see as a bad edit of a potentially good movie.

The behind the scenes “documentaries” for the Disney Trilogy are just promotional material.

I would love this, but I won’t be holding my breath. Good things like this tend to not happen

No offense, kid, but I don’t think you know how to boil water.

That sounds expensive, and admitting fault isn’t their style.

At least, in a way that changes anything

I don’t understand why they felt the need to cut the movie so short. Endgame was literally 3 hours long and I don’t remember anyone genuinely complaining about it, and considering they’re both owned by the same company and both finales to massive sagas, it could have easily been longer.

While my personal problems with this movie can’t really be solved by an extended cut, it could improve the movie by allowing us to breathe and giving it more quiet/contemplative moments. I would gladly see a longer version.

Rumors are starting to circulate about an extended cut being released to theaters toward the end of the month:
THE 192 MINUTE J.J. ABRAMS RISE OF SKYWALKER CUT IS COMING SOONER THAN YOU THINK

It breaks down to this:

  • An extended version of The Rise of Skywalker will be announced in the coming week, releasing near the end of January, and including 3-5 additional sequences fit into the narrative. This should bring the cut up from 142 minutes to about 165 minutes.
  • Rumored sequences to be included in this cut involve an extended Endor sequence that occurs before the final shot in the current film, Lobot and Lando in a sequence that predates the chase in the desert, and a slew of ghost Jedis returning alongside Luke and Leia and participating in the final sequence to unseat the Emperor.
  • This new cut will be simply treated as an Extended Cut, and will include a post-credits sequence highlighting additional sequences that will be released with the official Blu Ray release of The Rise of Skywalker which will have a special J.J. Abrams Director’s Cut version of the film at 185 minutes.
  • When The Rise of Skywalker enters the streaming window exclusively on Disney Plus it will include an additional 7 minutes of extra footage that didn’t get finished in post production as a part of its exclusive run on the streaming upstart.

Quoting here for relevance.

I’d like it to be true just because I really want to see everything. The film in theaters right now has clearly been cut down significantly. The article was linked by someone with connections to LFL but they don’t know anything about the veracity of the claims and I personally have never heard of the site before today.

Does this site have any kind of reputation?

Skimming that site and its headlines and lack of hard evidence, throws me into doubt and likely clickbait. Unknown website touting a claim of telling the “stories that others can’t” and trying elevate themselves with a story meant to really reel in readers…

On the coming novelization of ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’, by author Rae Carson:-

“just gonna shamelessly take this moment to mention that if the #TheRiseOfSkywalker film included everything in the novelization, it would definitely be at least 3 hours long”

That tweet kind-of confirms the reddit leaks in regards to the insider speaking about how Disney screwed up JJ’s original 3-hour cut. Then again, it’s a rumour.

No it doesn’t… novelizations don’t always follow movies to a T. Why else would they exist?
And the fact that scenes were cut doesn’t confirm Disney screwed over J.J. All movies are edited and have scenes cut.
