@Hal 9000 Can you remove the voice-overs of Mace Windu and Aayla Secura speaking when Rey fights Darth Sidious? It contradicts previously established lore in the pre-sequel trilogy canon, in which only Obi-Wan, Yoda, Qui-Gon, and Anakin knew how to become Force ghosts.

Here’s a question, how did Anakin know how to become a Force ghost anyway?

^ I don’t get your point about Ahsoka. If Rey is trying to commune with her Jedi ancestors, and it’s a valid thing to do spoken up by the texts (presumably), then it must supersede or otherwise bypass the small handful of people that learned Qui-Gon’s little trick within the past few decades.

And RogueLeader, might you post what you’ve got so far with that Han thing?

Well, this is obviously only a question once the prequels are factored in, as in 1983 one assumed that’s just what Jedi all do. I think the best answer would be that Obi-Wan and Yoda helped him.

Right. If we only consider the OT, then there’s no problem hearing voices of Jedi like Mace Windu. But if we do consider the PT, we are forced to assume that Anakin learned after death how to become a force ghost. Which means someone like Windu could too.

I’m out of town for a few days so I won’t be able to, but all I did was take Han saying “Huh” from when Rey says, “I bypassed the compressor!”, lowered the volume and had him say it when his face was looking away from camera. I can share it when I get back though.

When you die in Star Wars without learning how to become a Force ghost, you irreversably cease to exist. As Hal pointed out, Obi-Wan and Yoda might’ve helped Anakin, except (from what I view) maybe before his death.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

Well if you’re gonna do headcanon why not do a headcanon that explains TROS as well. It’s all made up reasoning anyway.

Well, I wouldn’t say you cease to exist, you just become one with the Force. The Jedi view this as a good and natural thing, and don’t cling to their individual selves. Qui-Gon’s trick seems somewhat perverse maybe, since it appears to be a resistance to the natural flow of things.

I seem to recall some piece of Star Wars writing, maybe one of the prequel novelizations, that suggested the Force itself was speaking to someone using the persona or voice of a particular Jedi. And if Jedi become one with the Force after death, potato potato maybe.

Anyone know any specific 3PO dialogue from the Clone Wars or something like that to replace “Whoever this Chewie person is, this is madness”?

Ideally something short and to the effect of “Perhaps I could help negotiate.”

Personally, the 2 major scenes I’d change/improve in this movie were: 1. The Rey Palpatine reveal. I don’t mind that Rey is a Palpatine. But I think the execution was done poorly. It felt like Kylo just threw it out there and it did not feel dramatic at all. The other scene is the kiss scene. I dig the kiss itself, but I hate how Ben died immediately after. The crowd at the theater cheered when they kissed. But a lot of people laughed when Ben died. It was just too soon and too fast. I don’t know if that’s JJ’s intention. But I wish his death would be more dramatic. And I later learned it’s not just my theater, someone else had the exact experience where the audience cheered at the kiss and then laughed when he died. I think slowing down both scenes giving them more breathing room will help a lot.

Overall, the movie is just too fast paced trying to fit too much content in. I think an extra 10 minutes of breathing room for multiple scenes will really enhance the experience.

Looking forward to your edit!

Is anyone aware of a suitable bit of music which combines the Emperor’s theme and the Imperial March? I wonder if replacing the musical cue which accompanies Vader’s helmet would be helpful to connect to TROS.

I don’t feel it should replace the Imperial March, but evoking both themes would be appropriate. Does anyone know of such a piece, or could perhaps blend them like that?

I don’t know if there’s an existing combination that fits, but I’m working on combining the existing Vader theme from the helmet scene with a piece of the Emperor’s theme. We’ll see what I come up with.

It was the opposite in ours: There were audible groans at the kiss. And other friends have told me their theaters actually boo’d haha. That pieced-together version of that scene on YouTube actually feels much better to me, with them almost looking like they might kiss, and then him dying instead. The tension is still there, you don’t need a big goofy romantic moment.

I think having Ben live at the end would be quite ambitious and maybe beyond the scope of this edit, but if possible I’d like to see him appear beside Luke and Leia as a force ghost. It would require some FX work but doesn’t seem impossible considering what’s been accomplished in some of Hal’s other edits. I don’t feel that we get enough closure with his character in the theatrical cut.

Regarding the removal of the 16 hour ticking clock, I personally missed this plot point entirely during my first viewing. I just assumed that Rey was in such a hurry because she was acting out of hatred for Palpatine and desperately wanted to kill the person who was responsible for the murder of her parents.

I also think it will still be clear that Palpatine is ready to strike at any moment if it’s removed. So the hurry is still understandable.

I’d definitely love to see Ben as a ghost at the end. I’ve thought about it but I can’t really think of any satisfying reason he shouldn’t be there.

As for the ticking clock, I’ve seen the film three times and I guess I’ve missed the “16 hour” mention each time. I trust you guys it’s there, but I’d say trust me it can be removed without losing anything.

We see the Holdo maneuver used on the Star Destroyer over the forest moon of Endor (where the Ewoks are watching) so it isn’t an impossible to repeat maneuver. I’d leave the mention of it in.

If a force ghost Ben isn’t possible, would it be feasible to add the force bond sound somewhere into the Tatooine sequence (ideally a bit before the Luke and Leia moment) without it being too jarring/out of place?

The implication with the sound of course being that Rey and Ben’s force bond is still intact, even in death. This moment would provide the first reassurance to Rey that Ben is truly “with her” after his becoming one with the force. Similar to her communicating with the Jedi of the past, but more easily accessible and permanent due to their force bond.

I mean, it’s already a bit of a long shot to salvage Rey’s weird apathy towards Ben’s death no matter how you spin it. The force bond sound/force ghost idea might at least be enough to show why she isn’t quite as affected by his death as she probably should be. Perhaps because she already understands from the teachings in the Jedi texts that Ben will still “exist” within the force? Thoughts?

I agree the editing of the no kiss looked quite nice & natural. But adding the kiss after doesn’t feel natural. Unless you can show Ben waking up again which won’t be possible without new footage.

At the same time, I also don’t think the kiss was the awkward part. It was the dying immediately after that felt awkward and rushed. With some breathing room/slowing down, I think it’ll look fine even with the kiss.

So I guess there are two ways to go about it, remove kiss to get a natural flow or add some breathing room, pauses on some frames so the death doesn’t feel like it came out of nowhere. It will be best if there’s already extended version of this scene on Blu-ray extras.

While I personally wish Ben lived because a redeemed Ben Solo would make for some great stories. But I think it makes perfect sense for him to die. If Luke died using force projection and Leia died using force to speak to Kylo at the end (and possibly projecting Han as some people theorized), Ben should definitely die from using force revive. This should be the most taxing of all the force abilities.
