Sounds like we have another RvB fan in the house.

What do you think of the Phantom Menace Yoda?

NO, NO, NO!!!
There is only one Yoda and that is the OT puppet Yoda. It's not a case of me being sentimental or hating the PT or being anti-CG anything like that, it is quite simply the fact that the OT puppet looks and acts the best.

Meh. Looks and acts are two seperate things.

It is strange, but I like the CGI Yoda and the OT puppet both for different reasons. The CGI Yoda just rocks. He gets to do all the but kicking and interacting with other characters decently. The ROTS Yoda just looked as real as the other characters. And most importantly, the CGI version was freed from the arm of Frank Oz. There is just something nice about seeing Yoda's feet and legs move when he walks around. The Empire Puppet never had this and it bugged me.

Still, there is a bit of magic in the Frank Oz performance that isn't quite there in the prequels. Frank's performance has an innocence and, uh, something else, that is cool.

Actually, there are scenes when you get to see Yoda's whole body. When Yoda is walking off with Luke's lamp beckoning him to come to his house, you can see his whole body walking. And of course when Yoda is balancing on Luke.

And I just don't think the CG Yoda looks right. I've said it before, but his eyes are just different. It looks like a relative of Yoda but not Yoda. There's so much soul in those puppet eyes. That was the only good thing about the PM Yoda was that his eyes were still pretty much the same even if he looked... well, crazy, there was still an inkling of that old magic.

Yeah, there is that scene, but that was a little person in a larger Yoda costume. You can see the guy's legs as he walks on his knees. It doesn't get any more fake than that.

Yes they are. And OT puppet Yoda wins in both categories.

What scene? The "Come! Come!" one?

Yoda in empire played by frank oz, although lithgow did a passable yoda in the radio play.

Far and away, the best CG Yoda shot was in the one where Obi-Wan says 'who could've done this'. Finally, I saw a fake Yoda that looked like the puppet. Pity it didn't stay at that standard all the way through the movie. It was very good in places, but unfortunately sucky in others.

I think Yoda was better in Episode 3 more for the amount of arse he kicked, and not for the effects alone. "Not if anything to say about it, I have". Priceless.

OT Yoda, of course. As far as I'm concerned, without the magic of Frank Oz's hands and voice, it's not the same-- no matter how "good" the CGI technology looked by the time Ep. III rolled around. Other than "just because", there was absolutely no point to have a shitty CGI Yoda in the majority of the prequels. For far away shots and obviously the "action" scenes, yes. But in CU and for overall performance, to shun the puppet was downright disrespectful to the character that Oz helped to create, and to Oz himself.

Plus, Oz's prequel Yoda voice just sounds weird, too. In the AOTC behind the scenes stuff, it sounds like he's not up to snuff in most of the line-readings that Lucas just says, "That was great" for. It seems like he came in for like an hour and burned through it all. Then again, Lucas can't tell a good performance from wood, hence Natalie Portman's acting.

Watching Empire now, after seeing the computer Yoda, the character is even more of a marvel. The emotion conveyed by just a puppet and a voice is amazing. You really forget he's a puppet sometimes. Whereas, I always was thinking about the effect in the prequels. It's a shame that with so much reliance on CG sets and characters, that Yoda couldn't have remained one of the "real" things.

I dont like the fact that epII and III yoda flies around with a lightsaber.

I agree. Yeah, he was "younger", and I really do like the idea of Yoda kicking ass, but he does fly too much, and too fast. Back to the AOTC making-of stuff, Lucas seemed to want it faster and faster (and more intense! LOL)-- making it more ridiculous. You can't show Yoda hobbling around the prequels (even being CARRIED, and RIDING on a floating device), and then have him flying and swooping-- it's just dumb. There could've been more of a balance between the docile Yoda, and Ninja Yoda.
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

Yeah, I always hated the prequel voice. There was always something that bugged me about it. TPM Yoda sounded too Muppetish... the voice was just extremely high. And then it gives a 180 for the other two and sounds really gravelly with a hint of squeaky. It's just weird. And it might have something to do with the horrible lines he was given as well.

I also have a hard time accepting Yoda's lightsaber skills. Yes, they look cool and it's exciting, but beyond that initial wow factor three years ago, you realize how ridiculous the concept is. Yoda always seemed somehow above swordfighting. He was an inner strength kind of guy, and it didn't need to manifest itself outwardly. He had insight and could move objects with the flick of the wrist. He didn't need to be so overtly kickass. It made him seem less Yoda and more like your generic Jedi thug. And it was all done for eye candy. Palpatine got the same sucky treatment in Sith. Apparently you can't have knowledge of the Force without resorting to making a laser sword.

And it makes little sense for Yoda's ability to be active. You can argue that spending a generation on Dagobah could ruin his physical side. But he seemed active enough in Empire. Plus, you have to understand that Yoda lived to be 900 years old. Twenty years is just a drop in the bucket for him. So I was flabbergasted in TPM when Yoda looked like a young... um, man, whatever. And, yeah, the inconsisitencies between flying squirrel and doddering invalid from scene to scene doesn't even deserve any more discussion. It simply makes no sense.

The same line, if spoken by PT Yoda: "Make one great, War does not".

Original Trilogy Yoda

Though I will have to admit I quite like AOTC and ROTS Yoda, TPM Yoda on the other hand is an abomination and an insult to the name "Yoda"
