The Rise of Skywalker: Ben Solo should have been Luke's & Leia's son

Food for thought:

Would it have made more sense overall, if Luke and Leia were not brother & sister, but lovers. And Ben, was Ben Skywalker. This way, his Grandad is still Darth Vader, and Luke would have felt more personal failings, preventing his own son’s turn to the dark side. (It makes much more sense, Luke would have named his son after Obi Wan) Also, Rey could have remained a Palpatine; and still had the love story with Ben. The Rise of Skywalker is therefore a much better allusion to the redemption of Ben; but ultimately the prevention of Rey’s turn to the dark side and take up of the Skywalker name. This way, Rey is also then therefore much more the adopted child of Luke & Leia. The ‘parents’ she never had.

Is this all too neat? The only thing you really lose, is Han’s involvement, and his love affair with Leia; but honestly, is that a big lose. Han was always a ‘solo’, hence the name.

Han and Leia should have just went by the name Skywalker. After all Alderaan is no more and Han got his name from a random imperial officer, why should he hold on to it?

“Vader! Hologram, now!”

Luke’s shame is much greater when he failed not just his nephew, but his sister who entrusted him to look after Ben.

If there was always going to be an ST featuring characters from the OT made two decades too late, then I think Poe is the one who should’ve been Luke’s son. He wouldn’t even have had to been a Jedi or Force-sensitive at all, so you could’ve kept Rey as the aspiring young Jedi of the trilogy. And best of all, Luke wouldn’t have become an abject failure with no legacy.

Was gonna say you must have watched a different film than I did but then I remember you didn’t watch the film at all.

Not true. I watched the first 40 minutes.

Well spoilers, but Luke grows from there and becomes a true legend.

Feh. Give me the Legends Luke who successfully rebuilds the Jedi Order and has a wife & child any century.

Believe it or not, just because you don’t have a wife and child doesn’t make you a failure.

My stance is far more nuanced than that. But nevermind — your opinion is the only correct one, anyway.

I mean, the whole point of what I’m saying is there is nuance to what constitutes failure vs. a successful life.

I believe failing to restore one’s religion, losing/abandoning one’s family, and running off to die alone on a deserted planet constitutes an epic failure.

But I’m unable to make a cogent argument, and you wouldn’t be able to fathom my POV even if I could, so whatever.

I understand your POV just fine, but you’re forgetting the end of the movie. Or, you would be if you had gotten to that part.

Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping.

I can read synopses with the best of them.

Clearly the when you only read the synopses you miss the nuances.

I’m fundamentally at odds with the entire ethos of TLJ. I don’t like it on paper, and I wouldn’t like it in execution.

That’s your prerogative. But you clearly seem unable to fathom the POV of the film.

+1

I would have been completely fine with any version of post-ROTJ Luke that was handled with the same care like he was by the “Legends” authors. Instead they gave this opportunity away to a bunch of cynical dumbasses.
