Your projector is 1080p, yes? Then yeah, I wouldn’t bother. Even if it can read and play a 2160p file, it wouldn’t look any different to you since it’s just downscaling and displaying it at 1080p anyway.

Ok, Thanks. I pretty much assumed as much, but I like to hear others opinions.

In my experience, downscaling a 2160p UHD Blu-ray doesn’t look as good as a 1080p Blu-ray on a 1080p TV.

depends, using custom PC software/MadVR and such for playback it can often look better including crisper, but it depends upon how extreme the HDR grade for one

Guys, I wanna ask u here to make sure it’s not just my copy - is the original 4K83, 1080p, no-DNR very bluish (or even pinkish?) throughout most of the film? I mean Endor looks very strange, even for an old film, surely this was not the cinematographer’s vision back then? Or was this the original idea? To make everything look so dark and devoid of natural colors? I mean it’s so very different from anything else I’ve seen. Is that supposed be like that? There’s no warm green present in Endor scenes whatsoever. I understand the thing about reel by reel color grading but still.

That’s the print fade. What youre seeing is a faded print. Each reel has been color balanced but the fade remains. Later versions are color corrected.

Yep, you want v1.3 (“minimal DNR”), which is the best available version now. The DNR used is minimal, just to target the chroma noise introduced by the scanner used while leaving as much of the grain on the actual film intact as possible, and it has a very good color grade from Sanjuro (with a couple adjustments made by ohteedee).

Thx guys, I’ll try to get that v1.3 somehow. It’s just so difficult to download these anywhere. I wish they were more accessible. I don’t really have time to register at a dozen different forums/websites and PM a bunch of people asking for help. I currently reside in China which makes it even more difficult to access certain services. I got the 37-38GB 1080p versions of 4k77 and 4k83 v1.0, but really cannot find the updated ones. Torrents don’t exist for those. 😃 I love the grain and everything, it’s just the colors that need a bit of correcting.

Alright, after some comparisons with the blu-rays, am I right to say that both 4K77 and 4K83 (all the version currently out) have crushed blacks? There is detail lost in black areas that cannot be seen no matter what settings in my video players. I still love the way the films look but the loss of detail in almost all deep-dark areas is disappointing. Hopefully, in the future, someone will use 4K prjects as their main sources for updated versions of the OT films but will combine them with other sources (Blu rays or 4K rips from Disney+, official 4kUHD discs coming in 2020) to fix just those problematic shots/scenes. I do not think Harmy DE v3.0 is coming anytime soon though.

Yes, I commented in the other thread (try not to cross-post) that this clipping is a by-product of the optical duplication process. Projection prints have some crushed blacks. There’s nothing 4Kxx can do to recover them because it’s that way on the prints.

What started out with some parts from an old VCR moving the film and a digital still camera, is now a full size standard 35mm cinema projector with a 4K Black Magic camera (and special lens) pointed directly into the projector.

Sorry for bumping this old message, but being a Blackmagic Camera fan boy, I’m curious to know what BM camera you are using? Is it the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4K? Or perhaps the recent Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K? Captured RAW or on ProRes?

Hello there!

I have recently grabbed the 4K83 2160p with no DNR version 1.0. Really enjoy the watch, its filmic and organic look as compared to the official Blu-ray. As most here, I find the original minimal color correction and faded prints perhaps a bit lackluster But just a bit. It’s still a superior presentation regardless.

However, reading this thread I have come to understood that there exists and even more superior 1.1 version of the same transfer in 2160p which has been color corrected but without any denoising. I have seacherd for it on the internet for the last days, various Torrent sites and NZB:s but cannot find any copy for download, other that the 1080p version.

Would appreciate immensly if someone could direct me to a site for download, either Torrent, Usenet, or better still, on MEGA. You cand send me a message if need be. Thanx in advance!

I really appreciate the cultural heritage preservation work that you have done to the world commonity Team Negative 1. You have set the new standard for this movie, with all the previous frames included. The Force will be with you, always!

JEDIT: Got it! Thank you so much. You know who you are.

It’s the very first Blackmagic 4K camera - the one that looks like this:

A nice one. Although, I have only used the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (which I own). The color science of these first generation of Blackmagic cameras are legendary. No wonder your scans looks so great!

I recently watched 4K83 version 1.3 and really enjoyed the color timing and grading which was strikinly beatiful. Return of the Jedi has never looked so great before. Also, the minimal DNR makes a good job creating visible but smaller grain as probably would be expected from a camera negative.

Keep up the good work Team Negative 1!

Tomas, compare 4K83 v1.3 with v1.0 in scenes like Han out of carbonite - see the unnaturally pepper-red face of Han Solo? As I said before, most of the color corrections on the 1.0 versions of the 4K projects (1.1, …) tend to fix one scene /shot while making the next one worse. We’re still with no definitive, best version of either 4K77 or 4K83 right now.

Edit: u could also compare that scene with the official blu-ray version. Neither 4K83 v1.0 nor blu-ray make Han look so red.

Yes, I noticed that. But my original though about it was that his face was catching the red light coming from the structure/frame holding the carbonite sarcofagos which is quite red lit in both the 1.1 and 1.3 versions. In comparison, it is more orange and bleak in the 1.0 version. I don’t object to it. The Blu-ray isn’t a good reference to use as they use a much more modern color timing to make the originals fit in with the prequels. And version 1.0 is a bit to washed out color wise in my opinion.

So I tried downloading “2160p v1.3 (minimal NR)” and I’m currently at 96% complete and got the subtitles, extra audio files, and everything else but not the movie. Did I do something wrong? It took me all day trying to download. I have enough memory storage so it’s not that.

EDIT - Sorry it didn’t show up until the very end of 99%. Someone can delete this comment.

Can anybody kindly point me in the direction of where to get the latest minimal/no NR 2160p versions of this? The stuff I find on usenet is all either outdated or not healthy enough to download properly. I was going to register with thestarwarstrilogy.com but as of right now it’s invite-only and I’m late to the party.

I am beyond excited that projects like this exist and I have a soft spot for RotJ. Pretty sure it’s the one I watched the most back when I was a kid on hand-me-down VHS tapes back in the day. Probably because green was my favorite color haha.

I don’t know that there is a “latest version” per se, depends on what you want I guess.

There’s:

4K83 MinimalNR 1.3 with Shot by Shot Color correction by Sanjuro
4K83 MinimalNR 1.4 with Reel to Reel Color correction by Dek Rollins
4K83 MinimalNR 1.6 with Reel to Reel Color correction by Dr. Dre

I’m no expert on what looks the best/closest to original theatrical experience (Reel to Reel)

Thanks a bunch, guys. I am truly humbled that members here took the time to help out a newbie like me with finding this.

4K83 looks fantastic: it’s natural and film-like. I can’t wait for 4K80.

Hey guys, I’m also looking to get V1.3 but can’t seem to find it on any of the torrent sites or nzb indexers. Would anyone be able to help me out? Can’t register for thestarwarstrilogy.com forums as they’re currently closed except to invites.

Thanks in advance!
