I was thinking about what changes needed to be made to the other films to remove Rey Palpatine, and I think one of the biggest things would be to cut Ochi’s ship flying away from Jakku in the TFA flashback.

I remember awhile back I had this idea of creating a new shot to replace that one in TFA, instead we’d see two people disappearing over the top of a sand dune, with the sun in front of them (making them dark silhouettes).

This could parallel beautifully with the end of TROS if you had Ben Solo live and meet Rey on Tattooine. We could see his silhouette coming towards her over the horizon, with the twin suns rising behind him. Not only would you get a reversal of that classic “cowboy riding off into the sunset” cliché (which Gary Kurtz wanted for Luke in ROTJ), but these two parallel shots would also be a nice callback to this line in TFA:

Whoever you’re waiting for on Jakku, they’re never coming back. But, there’s someone who still could.

Why can’t we just assume it’s Rey’s parents abandoning her?

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

Ochi’s kinda cool though. It was an interesting subplot. Wish they’d found him trapped in the tunnels alive and confronted him, ending in a quick little battle.

Jannah was a love interest for Lando.

Also, we need to give Rey’s father a third eye.

Pedophilia

I’m assuming Jannah’s thirteen years old or less. Otherwise, you’re grossly misusing that term.

That’s what I’m saying. You can’t remove Ochi’s ship from IX, but if you wanted to remove Rey Palpatine from the story, you would have to cut Rey seeing that same ship from her TFA forceback.

You can keep the ship and Ochi in IX, but you’d have to nix that connection to 7 so it’d just be a random ship and not one that Rey remembers. So my idea is to have Rey still see her parents leaving her, but not leaving on the same ship we see in IX.

Someone has to add Ben and Anakin to the Force Ghosts at the end

I’d have to disagree on cutting Chewbacca getting the medal. Is it cheesy? Very much so. But at the same time, if this is really supposed to be the last moments of the whole saga, I want to see long time characters getting some sort of a moment. If anything, I wish there were more moments like it. I really feel that Rey and Ben ended up being the only characters that got a very proper ending. I felt like all the others really didn’t get to shine much other than sharing a big group hug. It would be hard to edit around it, but I wish Finn and Poe could have had their epilogue moments similar to Rey.

This is a hard one, because there are many issues with this movie, but removing them could possibly make the already fast pace even more frenzy. If possible, these are the edits I would suggest:

  • Keep Rey as a nobody instead of being Palpatine’s granddaughter, which makes no sense. Make it just so her parents sold her to protect her, but she doesn’t have the Emperor’s blood.
  • Cut Death Star technology from Palpatine’s fleet and the destruction of Kijimi (I still can’t believe they made a movie with a thousand Death Stars)
  • Delay the reveal Chewbacca was alive
  • Cut the creepy conversation between Lando and Jannah in the end
  • Cut Maz giving Chewie a medal

I think if Kylo finding Palpatine was moved to the end of Episode 8, then it could mirror TFA with Rey finding Luke, maybe add some little things throughout that help foreshadow Palpatine more. I looked around on the jungle planet after seeing it again, which I’m pretty sure is unnamed because I was listening for it, and in my head it’d take a lot of time to add Naboo elements to tie it with the prequels more considering the type of shots.

100% this. With Snoke being killed in TLJ, you end the movie with Palpatine revealing himself and that he created Snoke. Cliffhanger and and make it feel like a storyline planned from the beginning.

Kylo should also rebuild his helmet at the end of TLJ. Maybe move Rey’s training montage in the jungle to the end of TLJ also.

Then change the crawl in Rise of Skywalker to talk about how Rey found the dagger on a Jedi expedition, the problem with Threepio unable to interpret Sith. I HATED this setup and choice for the McGuffin in Rise Act 1.

We open with the crew finding the programmer and we learn about Poe’s past as the opening act. We first see Kylo in Rise as he goes before the First Order Generals, completely in charge with new helmet already built.

Other big thing that bugged me was how long it took for the rest of the galaxy to show up in the final battle. Poe and his “fleet” would not have lasted that long against that many Star Destroyers or Tie Fighters.

Overall my favorite of the new trilogy but really excited about the edit potential. can’t wait to see the cut scenes!!

In this interview Domnhall Gleeson and Richard Grant confirm that one of the scenes that got cut out of them in Mustafar with Kylo will be on the extras of the home release.

I hope to god that it doesn’t have the timecode like the TFA deleted scenes and hopefully this means they’ll release all the other stuff they cut out.

Let’s hope they have Extended Edition available similar to BvS that will fill in the plot holes. The extended version of BvS fixed this movie for a lot of ppl including me. Ironically, TROS has the same writer as BvS which seems to follow the same beats with critical scenes missing from the movie.

I doubt they’ll release an extended edition since Star Wars is very particular about its canon and they probably don’t wanna open that can of worms with an alternative cut.

But as long as we get deleted scenes then I’m sure this community will be able to pick it up from there 😉

The novelisation will probably incorporate all the deleted scenes so an extended cut wouldn’t necessarily go against canon.

Do you guys feel that Zorri and Jannah were introduced strangely as potential love interests for Finn and Poe? I feel they wanted to make it clear they’re not gay, or something.

I saw this movie with a few friends, two of which are part of the LGBTQ+ community and they both read it this way. This is the only reason I’d consider cutting the overtly romantic bits of Poe and Zorri’s relationship, to leave it at least ambiguous.

In fairness, Poe could be bi. But I get it.

This article resonated with me a bit, and gave me second thoughts about the whole “Rey Skywalker” bit: https://www.slashfilm.com/rey-in-the-rise-of-skywalker/
I wonder if it would be possible to replace the Force Ghosts of Luke and Leia at the end with that of Ben Solo’s ghost giving Rey an encouraging nod. Then instead of “Rey Skywalker”, she could say something like “Rey…just Rey”. Just a thought.

In fairness, Poe could be bi. But I get it.

He definitely could, as could Finn (especially considering he already hinted at feelings for Rey in TFA and kissed Rose in TLJ). However it’s hard not to read it as a “no-homo” thing in context. I know this is really only disappointing to a certain subset of fans, and it didn’t bug me that much when I watched the movie, but I think Finn/Poe at the end would have made more sense than introducing a new love interest for Poe and a potential love interest for Finn this late in the game.

The fact that Poe and Finn didn’t end up in a relationship is definitely one of the more unfortunate elements of the trilogy for me. They clearly had some real chemistry in TFA and I don’t think there’s any lack of stories about dudes who are just really close like bothers (but not in love, never in love).

I think that for my eventual personal edit I’ll:

-Remove any implications of any romantic feelings between Poe and Zorri/Finn and Jannah (aaagh Disney are cowards!!)
-Slow down the pacing using subtle digital slow motion (to hold on shots for longer) and deleted scenes.
-Remove Rey being a Palpatine but keep her parents being killed by Ochi.
-Remove the kind of disgusting line ‘they sold you to protect you.’
-Add shot of Leia holding Han’s medal to right before her death scene (you can notice that she’s holding it when she lays down but no attention is brought to it)
-Rey doesn’t bring BB-8 to Tatooine?
-There is a lot of voice over in this movie (Palpatine VO over ships at the beginning, him taunting Rey at the end, the whole Resistance taking off sequence) that feels a little un-Star Wars-y, so reducing it would be fine.
-Remove Lando’s conversation with Jannah/reduce the ‘old smoothie’ attitude he seemingly has?
-Have Finn and Poe receiving info from Boolio as the first scene? THEN we cut to Mustafar afterwards, where maybe we hear Palpatine’s broadcast from Fortnite?
-Rewrite crawl to be less “accept all of this new information as quickly as possible”
-Reduce back-peddling of decisions made in The Last Jedi.
-Remove ‘Holdo Maneuver’ line
-On my second watch, I thought to myself that a lot of scenes might have more weight/feel more dramatic if the music was removed. Can’t think of many specific examples except for the second scene in Babu Frik’s workshop.
-Remove/push back scene of Chewie being revealed to be not dead. Either don’t show him until after everyone mourns his loss, or cut the scene and have his being alive revealed when Rey senses him on Kijimi.

This movie is very strange to me because there is a lot that I love but there’s so much that I really dislike. BUT the things that I dislike I know can be removed through editing, so we’ll see.

I have no idea where to even begin with editing TROS, but I am very hopeful that one of you amazing people will someday be able to turn this entire sequel trilogy into an enjoyable 3-4 hour edit or a two-parter.

First act ending with SKB etc, somehow twist Snoke actually being Palpy… I don’t know. Crossing my fingers that someone will find a way to salvage this.

I really can’t blame them though for not incorporating the FinnPoe angle, it would have been a financial suicide especially in the international market.

Give it a few decades tho…

^ I hadn’t realized the shot of Leia holding the medal was going to be right before she layed down. That should so have been kept! It ties in Han’s appearance as a memory into her efforts to call out to Ben.

Yeah, that’s something an edit should try to include.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I wonder if you could remove Ochi killing Rey’s parents? If you go with the Rey Nobody angle I feel like it would be better to not give her the “parents tragically murdered” backstory.

Also, I was wondering if there was a way the McGuffin quest could be tightened at all. I think it would be good to remove the dagger line up with the outline of the Death Star wreckage. It just seems like the dagger looks ancient, but then it has the coordinates of something that crashed into the sea 30 years ago.

I just don’t know how possible it is to remove Rey’s parents from the movie? If its possible i would do it, but Ochi’s ship design is very explicitly from Force Awakens so it might be odd to have the same ship without the backstory?

The first Rey and Palpatine scene will already be a nightmare ‘My granddaughter…’ ‘Empress Palpatine’ etc.

Author
Time

I guess you couldn’t if you kept TFA intact as-is.

So, if you edit just TROS to make her Rey Nobody, you keep Ochi killing her parents but make it to where Palpatine just foresaw the threat she could pose.

But, if you’re TFA and TROS, you could just cut that shot of Ochi’s ship from TFA, if you can seamlessly remove Rey’s parents being murdered.

It would be difficult for a number of reasons, that, but also quite a bit of dialogue is had talking about the fact that Palpatine had her parents killed, from Kylo but then later from Rey to Finn. In my mind, leaving it in is the much cleaner solution. Palpatine sensed her power early and wanted her dead, and ended up killing her parents looking for her. This fuels Rey’s anger and spurns her to search for Palpatine and kill him (as she states in the film). Removing that entirely would create a lot of problems.

The first Rey and Palpatine scene will already be a nightmare ‘My granddaughter…’ ‘Empress Palpatine’ etc.

Arguably, you could keep “Empress Palpatine,” because Palpatine will be taking over her body, right? Might actually make an interesting parallel to the last scene, here Palpatine is goading her to adopt his name, essentially.
