Doctor Who Edit Ideas — Page 2

As much as I’d love to, I’m probably never gonna get around to editing Doctor Who simply because obtain legal copies of every episode is too much of a pain in the ass, not to mention expensive.

If I’m being honest though, despite what the law says, I think the early episodes should be public domain by now, but I don’t to anger the mods.

I put together a “Name of the Doctor” edit, rearranging a couple of scenes (like replacing the second montage of Clara in the Doctor’s timestream with the first from the pre-credits) and making use of Oliver Comet’s “9th Doctor cameo” edit on Youtube.

What if instead of being confined to one episode, the Cubes from Power of Three served as a story arc for S7A? Just a thought.

I recently completed an extended edit of EARTHSHOCK. Using most of the bonus filmed material from part one and colour correcting it, the special sounds audio effects from the photo gallery slide show came in very handy.

The video conversion software I used wouldn’t allow me to rip the new CGI effects, so I used the original 1982 version to work from.

All four parts have been edited together, removing the cliffhangers. I also got rid of the (corny) silent end credits (Adric doesn’t deserve it) and replaced it with the part three end credits.

I gave it a new colour grading - getting rid of the piss-yellow cast and making the Cybermen a more metallic grey-silver.

I just finished a cut of part thirteen of Trial of a Time Lord, removing the references to the Valeyard being a manifestation of the Doctor’s darker side, now he’s absolutely a future Doctor, and also removed references to Peri being alive and married to Brian Blessed.

Brian Blessed is going to be my husband now!

Has anybody tried cutting the classic series to have episodes the same length as the modern series? Or vice versa? Or just editing the TV movie into a classic serial?

I feel like a version of Orphan 55 where the planet isn’t Earth is a pretty obvious fanedit to make.

I thought of a minor trim to Spyfall part one…just have the cliffhanger sting come right on the shot of the plane in free-fall.

I think it great to replace silly looking dot eyed Daleks in the color classics with glowy eyed ones.

I recently rewatched WhoFlix’s edit of this episode, looking to see what he had done here that I could differently, he had used all five instalments of the minisode series Pond Life as well as the DVD exclusive Asylum prequel to create an extensive pre-title sequence. I came away from the edit thinking not all of Pond Life ought to have been used, particularly the nonsense with the Ood on the Loo and his housekeeping role, or the bits that led into Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.

I made the decision to use the first and the last of the Pond Life shorts, in this case reversing them in order so as to create a brand new ending for the episode. The months that date the shorts can easily be interpreted as being part of a prior year and the early stages of the next, seeing as no actual year is specified.

The changes

-Added Pond Life episode 5. Removed credits at the end
-Titles now come after Amy says she needs The Doctor.
-Asylum prequel plays after the titles
-Narration and shots of the Dalek statue from the original pre-titles of Asylum have been cut
-First few moments with Oswin removed to omit producer and director credits
-Episode carries on as normal until we see The Doctor operating the console uttering the words “Doctor Who?”
-First episode of Pond Life plays

I decided to re-edit the Eleventh Hour, and for a bit of fun, inserted the promotional trailer they ran for series five (the one where 11 and Amy are pulled into the vortex) into the episode in place of what Amy is actually dreaming about (her waiting on The Doctor as a child), it works surprisingly well as a replacement dream.

Would it possible to edit The Timeless Children to implement the ever-popular idea of the Master being the Timeless Child? I mean, I’d rather nobody be the Timeless Child but the story wouldn’t really work without it.

Did another edit of Angels Take Manhattan, the infofarium short is now the pre-titles, and I replaced the last scene with (Amy’s farewell) with the Rain Gods short. Rory’s Story, the recently released Youtube special, is now the new ending.

I have turned my attention to The Timeless Children, editing out everything to do with the Timeless Child revelation and replacing all the sequences with Brendan from the previous episode. Also removed the cliffhanger. I also replaced the Morbius Doctors with the ones from Curse of Fatal Death. Current runtime is one hour, six minutes.

I’d be down to watch that. Then again, I’d rather give it some time before revisiting it. Why Fatal Death, though?

Because I felt like it. They’re less ambiguous Doctors and can’t be misinterpreted as incarnations belonging to Morbius.

But they’re also explicitly non-canon. And given the tone of the short, they should stay that way.

Doctor Who has no canon

Also, hate to break it to you, but the “tone” of the short sums up most of Nu Who since the comeback

Deep Breath is a bore already, and it certainly doesn’t need 76 minutes, so you could easily cannibalize bits of it to sprinkle throughout Series 7 to establish that she’s still living in Victorian London. The Crimson Horror would flow very naturally with that, being the equivalent of modern day stories for other companions. It’d be nice if we could show or at least imply her family living in that time (and remove them from Time of the Doctor, of course). The Bells of Saint John could be moved to right before Name of the Doctor, and Danny Pink could be introduced there. Nightmare in Silver could be edited so that the children she’s babysitting are from Victorian Times, with a line to address their modern wardrobe (and Clara, for that matter). Then by Day of the Doctor she’s all settled in modern times in the hopes of winning the heart of Danny Pink, and Series 8, minus the bits moved to 7, plays out the same as in canon.

At first, I was thinking that making Victorian Clara the only Clara wouldn’t work because of some of the knowledge and familiarity that modern Clara routinely shows toward the 21st century, but then I came up with an idea. Maybe the part in “The Bells of St. John” where Clara gets uploaded into the Internet, then downloaded back again (resulting in her developing computer skills) could also be used to explain why she has the knowledge of the modern era that she has.

I was thinking about the possibility of re-editing Season 3 (and The Tenth Planet) to reorder them so that The Daleks’ Masterplan serves as the First Doctor’s final outing. It’d be very tricky, but here’s what I came up with that just might work.

  • Let’s be real, you can skip Galaxy 4

  • The Myth Makers but without Katarina joining

  • The Massacre - The Savages (all the Steven and Dodo stories) but without Steven leaving

  • The Daleks’ Masterplan 1-6

  • A mashup of The Feast of Steven and The War Machines that introduces Ben and Polly but keeps Steven and Dodo onboard

  • Let’s be real, you can skip The Smugglers

  • The Tenth Planet with Steven and Dodo’s absences accounted for or their presence added in

  • The Daleks’ Masterplan 8-12 with Ben and Polly added in

So that’s basically it. While adding in extra characters who weren’t there might sound impossible, given I’d be working off of reconstructions, inserting them might actually be feasible. Just add them standing around and throw in a line from another episode once in a while and it should be good. Besides, Ben and Steven sound practically the same, so I might be able to swap some lines between them.
