Ultimate Machete Order (with Sequel Trilogy)

Release order doesn’t work because the Anthology films break the pace of the ST. Chronological order doesn’t work because all the plot twists are spoiled. And Machete Order never accounted for new films being made.

To fix that, here’s the Ultimate Machete Order AKA Machete Order 2.0.

  1. Rogue One
  2. Star Wars
  3. The Empire Strikes Back
  4. The Phantom Menace
  5. Attack of the Clones
  6. Revenge of the Sith
  7. Solo
  8. Return of the Jedi
  9. The Force Awakens
  10. The Last Jedi
  11. The Rise of Skywalker

Feel free to state your opinions or try this out.

Release order with the Episodes, save the spinoffs for later. That’s the only logical order with the sequel trilogy these days.

  1. SW '77
  2. TESB

That’s the order I’d watch the films in if I hadn’t given all my SW stuff away (a decision I’ve come to regret very much).

It’s strictly unaltered OT for me - Star Wars '77, TESB '80, Conan the Barbarian '82…

I think the O.P.'s order is the best. If you’ve never read the original rationale for the Machete Order or it’s update in light of the sequal trilogy, check it out:

The originator of Machete Order, Rod Hilton, actually suggests approaching Ep 1, Solo, Rogue One, and the shows as Anthology material to be watched in any order at another time than the other main eps. because they don’t directly serve Luke’s story.

It might be needlessly complicating things, but you could make the argument to watch Solo right before TFA. I’d say that adds a little something to Han’s story in TFA, but otherwise I’d agree that the spinoffs can be easily saved to after the fact. I’d almost agree to giving TPM an “anthology” classification, but ultimately the main reason I think you should keep it is the Shmi/Anakin relationship.

I’m also in favour of this approach - this is what I’ve said to several of my non-Star-Wars-y friends.

I am starting a 1 film per day marathon of this order tomorrow, taking a one day break to watch Meet Me in St. Louis at the South Side Works Theater in between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. I am also watching the Ewok films inbetween Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens.
