Koch Media are Releasing a new transfer in 2020 both Versions… It has new extra’s Licensed such as the cine film Sean young shot during production… But that is all that is currently known.
Let’s hope while they are going through the original camera negatives that they find some of the scenes from the scripts… Extra dialogue and plot and action is what we want to see, although if they find some special effects stuff too all the more interesting. 😃
I don’t really care if they are cleaned up either, but David Lynch would order them presented properly like with Blue Velvet and Fire Walk with me, so there is no need to ask him on that count. I don’t mind seeing extra stuff even of the same or similar quality we already have if it was between a choice of seeing it and not seeing it, but this is not confirmed any new extra material will be made available.

There is probably a link between the Dennis Villeneuvue Remake and them Restoring this version to cash in on potential new interest in the property yes.
But although the TV cut has it’s merits for restoring material why not just restore the rest of the material and present a expanded Rough cut?
The TV cut is pretty Clunky when it comes to the missing scene cards and how this was handled… It could be edited better by a teenager today… So I don’t mind them restoring that at all but there is a case for why bother with it entirely in the state it’s in and make a proper extended version as they can do what they like / want with it.
Also considering if you are going through the Original Camera Negatives just scan all the scenes in from what must of been referenced on the reels on the approx 4 hour rough cut.

The Conan the Destroyer Mountain would be good for showing the other Sietch where Alia is Taken… If it could be Implied and joined with Rabaan in the desert then perhaps we could then have a bit of extra plot… There is a shot in the Emperor of Dune game where a Harkonnen slits a Fremens throat and throws him down a sand dune… Then show Rabaan in the Desert then the Sietch (Conan the Destroyer) Then the emperors Lines fill in the Gap and we see Rabaans Severed Head as the Baron Enters.
When the Harkonnen Thopter is flying over Rocks we only see the Rocks and no Thopter. This Thopter Image has been extracted for use on the shots just before Paul Commandeers the Thopter.

Dealing With Kaitain was not happy with the Look for Kaitain here is a better version and it a similar art style…

Attempt at Blend Probably needs to scale down but I think this may be one of those ideas that are a waste of time…
Although the transition from the Sleeper must Awaken to the dropship works well enough… I think it still could be better visually and I’m not sure how to handle Kaitain at all… Ideas welcome.
Assets for the Filmbook have been prepared and I have done the opening and quite a lot of good edits basically I plan to do some slot in updates which I will share when ready…
When I come to this Transition I have thought about having a Guild Report but not as in the Movie… I thought about just the Guild Logo on a screen… And then Showing Kaitain out the Viewscreen but not particularly sure on how to visually improve this part… I could cut the dropship entirely and have the Shot’s of the Landed for when the Guild visit the emperor later… It’s a bit of a no simple solution moment for this…

Although I have produced a lot of art… The edit so far is very organic for the opening unlike a sci fi movie or traditional sci fi movie.
Everytime I try to make it more sci fiction it just wants to be a natural film.
The transition to kaitain may go through a water droplet as originally planned from black screen.

Been Animating the filmbook and trying to get the updated content to blend…Not Easy.
But from as far as music and Narrative is concerned this is as close to the Lynch version as I can get… The Dune Story book confirmed this order of events and it is based on the script.
There has been some Good Music and Sound edits but restoring the music cues has given me confirmation that I am putting it back in the intended order…
The Music for House Atreides blends perfectly with the music of the opening credits…
Although I have not been able to replace the emperors palace a good color correction will do but after this scene with the Navigator the Rest of the Narration was supposed to play after the Bene Gesserit Reverand Mother Says “On Caladan” leading us back to Caladan.

Actually It might be Voice over for the part about the Guild… Then Irulian Appears on “The Bene Gesserit sisterhood has been interfering with the Blood Lines”
It is fitting together very easily in this order because it’s made to go in this order… The Music and the Footage and the Story.
This is the part the TV cut does a very weird edit… It has the Irulian footage though so it was not needed at all… The Irulian narration needs removing from the Caladan waves and castle which I have done to allow this in it’s intended place.
The actual scene order for Paul’s Dream Jessica and Reverand Mother visit and the associated scenes are also in the incorrect order so I hope to make this at least chronologically correct.
The Reverand mother Voice over and scene “Here it comes…” has been put in the correct location… and a shot from inside the Navigator Tank looking at the Emperor has had Smoke / Gas added as has the shots of the Navigator inside the tank where smoke is missing
The Other thing I need to do is get the Super in place on the dropship landing at the palace to say “Planet Kaitain Home to the emperor of the known universe” Interestingly the comic simply has it as “Planet Kaitain home of House Corrino”
And in the next picture expands it to “And the Emperor of the Known Universe”
If anyone can identify the font? let me know what it is…

The Plan is that the first 30 minutes or so will be released to stream on the anniversary of Dune on 12th December that should be just enough time to sort a few things out as I don’t have time right now.
The idea is that this will be a self contained bolt on to fix the major flaws at the opening act.
This could then be added or spliced in to either the theatrical / extended cut or say spicediver version or any other version if you should so wish
So if there is anything that you feel is hindering the film or errors mistakes in the opening first act please let me know. I am not sure if I will make it to geidi prime by the 12th December but I have ideas for it…

The thing stopping me from working more on Dune is that we lack scenes for the ending.
No matter as much as I try, it’s always lacking. Alia comes from nowhere, and time has passed.
(Time skips also happen when Paul is with the freemen. We need to break that up more).
Perhaps we do need some “narration” (titles over images) to move things along and offer some exposition.
Yes you are correct francesca de laurentis talks in the documentary on the Universal EE DVD about the alternative water of Life sequence and how the reshoot was designed to replace about 7 other scenes and also no doubt truncated the ending to a point that as you say is quite unrepairable without that material.
I think The start as I currently have it I feel I can stamp it resolved or fixed although I still need to complete some more shots and transitions.
My hopes on this Are resting on the Koch media release having the remainder of scenes I listed from the script the big chunk from that end part. If it does not surface then fans will never to get to see let alone attempt to reconstruct a full and proper version.
But there are more shpts to complete that are unfinished so plenty more to still chip away at.
That narration I linked to I am probably going to cut short at… “control for their own selfish purposes…” and I am going to try and find an alternative to having Irulian appear for which I have 2 ideas about how to possibly do this.
You can always go with Lynch’s first script and just cover the first third of the novel!

Yeah but the point is Lynch had it in the can… All the major plot points from the novel were covered in the script and no doubt shot so the material just needs to be released and why not?
This emphasises the failure of the TV cut even more that although the water of life sequence was reshot there was still the sub plot of Jessica being the traitor, Alia being unnacepted for who she was and so on.
The TV cut was never going to restore Sting killing the Sandakar captain on Geidi-prime probably due to violence or Doctor Yueh laser cutting the dead Harkonnen to get the message out of his body, Max Von Sydow killed by the Spice Blow of the sand trout baby worms. But even if we accept it as a censored version with terrible audio and two pieces of music playing simultaneously quite a few times. It is still a failure because it never re-integrated the material that was needed towards the end the Coam report and the true guild report about Spice was in serious trouble.
Everyone loves the thuffer huwat death scene that still never made the TV cut should it not be obvious that these scenes are the story just tell the story of Dune and stop worrying about offending people with content that is of more graphic nature and tell the story proprrly.

I just checked it again and they go with the male narrator to bridge the missing scenes.
But it doesn’t work because it’s still rushed and out of place.
I wonder if we could retool the male narrator’s voice into Guild or Harkonen reports… visually you could have it over establishing shots, ships and reaction shots from the emperor, baron, etc.

I actually was going to use a synthesized voice from a web page that has numerous voices to choose from.
But this is along the right lines for the true planned guild report that was planned for the second visit to the emperor.
The way I am sort of handling it or how I thibk it works best is using natural real footage waves, Space, Lava Eruption, sky, Lightning. I think visually this blends and can accomodate voiceover.
I like it! For a secret report why not show some distant takes of Paul, Baron, etc as secret camera footage ?
Perhaps adding a camera / binoculars effect, or the filmbook look. Just an idea.
I watched the mini series about a month ago and altgough it was alright it is nowhere near as good as this film in terms of acting design visuals music and sound and costumes but the story and how it was done was quite well executed.
So that was when I then realised there are Guild satellites orbitibg Arrakis monitoring the Choam company output so i was planning to use that Model from Battle Beyobd the Stars and then simply have a message over the guild logo.
Cut to navigators visiting the emperor or something like that…
Gurney is also with a group of Spice smugglers so yeah that other model 'space cowboy" ship could perhaps fill that blank.
Paul looking through the binoculars was meant to co-incide with the spice smuggler raid so I kind of thought it could be possible perhaps to try and show that somehow.
That Gurney footage might be used as if obtained by the Guild somehow. Satellite or a miniature “fly” drone or something.
A guild report would then explain that sprice production is low, and Paul has reunited with former Atreides house member Gurney Halleck. We see them reuniting, but only hear the guild narration.

Something I thought was important from the mini-series was Jessica banning the water sellers outside the palace and aallowing free rashions for the city fremen rather than the Harkonnen style growing the palm trees and exploiting the city fremen to pay for their water…
In the script this is only vaguely spoken about by Dr. Yueh in a small deleted segment as he explains the water sellers and there is no script entry for the free ration system. But the Fremen at the gates was shot with their funny hats…
I would like to somehow include the bit about the palms in the filmbook as intended… Harkonnens flaunting their water wealth. I wonder if it is the picture of the large rock wall with the trees on top? This is the alternative I imagine to the “weather. See Storms. No precipitation” in the film book.

only one shot caught my eye was a shot from the cable car window on geidi prime. Possibly would be worth using.
But I will see if there is any sound effects or dialogue worth trying to isolate. Essentially I kind of want to stick to the script and recreate the missing stuff that may or may not have been shot
The TV cut has shots for the Sandakar arrival on Geidi prime and the landing field ready to depart or just returned from Arrakis so I plan to add the building from the concept art to those shots.
The Sandakar train on that prision planet Selussus secondus or what ever it is called. It would nice to some how include a small beat about it but not sure…
I like the guy with the robot head in the HR geiger chair though and his voice effects.
