Lucas is obviously a visual control freak but I would imagine all the sky replacements come from how easy it is to do and was one of the earliest effects tricks that sort of became the go-to shorthand for describing post in digital and what you could do with the budding technology, you can find an old interview of Scorsese referencing sky replacements as well.

It’s not just the sky that has been changed. The dunes were altered for the SE and they have reverted those back to the '77 version

I noticed this last night too. I didn’t realize it was the original sand though. The sky/sand replacement was 2004.

Is… is this a sign they actually went back to the 97 negative and redid all of the subsequent changes?

I have so much work to do.

JEDIT: this would also explain why it doesn’t have the mistakes introduced in 04 (Ben’s purple lightsaber, the glow added without the core, Ghost Luke).

They still haven’t fixed what is imo RotJ’s most glaring vfx error, which is that when the DS2 destroys another ship all of the stationary ships in the background roll with the camera.

That’s exactly what Reliance did, yes. Their restoration started with a new scan of the 1997 negative, and then all the 2011 changes (plus a few more) were applied to it.

I’m becoming convinced through my own brand of research. All of the 04 mistakes are gone. Some weird changes made in 04 are missing (Alderaan slides into position on the DS screen again).

So it’s 2009/10, they were working on the 3D version, presumably in 4K, perhaps hoping to downscale it for the Blu-ray. Maybe recreating all of the 04 effects in 4K was taking longer than expected, so they took the 3D release changes and applied them to the 1080p/2004 master and released it in 2011, finishing the recreated 04 changes in 2012.

This doesn’t explain why they bothered to mess with Greedo for the Blu-ray. Perhaps it’s an earlier draft?

Do we know when Reliance did their scan?

3D conversion didn’t take that long, even in 2009. I don’t think they were working on 3D conversions that early, either. I think it’s much more plausible/probable that they got the idea to do 3D re-releases in 2011 (maybe late 2010), and decided that in order to make the 3D conversion as good as it could possibly be, they’d go back to the 97 negatives and re-scan everything in 4K (I believe the new scans were created in that year). Since the blu-rays were already more or less completed by that time, it was easy to take those changes and apply them to these new scans, plus add some extra changes that hadn’t gone into that home video release.

Essentially, it seems like the 3D re-release plan was the catalyst for Lucas to essentially start over from scratch in creating his preferred versions, the release of which would act as a guaranteed 3D income stream as well as promotion for whatever his sequel trilogy was going to be at that time - this is essentially the exact same purpose the Special Edition restoration served for his Prequel Trilogy: Sell the “old” versions on home video (1995: THX releases, 2011: blu-ray releases) screen “new” versions in theaters (1997: Special Editions, 2012: 3D re-releases) to generate hype for the new trilogy coming soon (1999: PT, 2014/15: ST)

And then TPM 3D came out, disappointed everyone financially, and the conversation surrounding the release was mostly negative. The 3D re-release idea was scrapped, and shortly afterwards he decided he was just going to sell the company to Disney.

I don’t have the expertise some here do, but I thought right away the Original Trilogy on Disney+ looked better than what I previously had access too.

What is the consensus on this? How good of a company is Reliance? Is this the best the Original Trilogy can look? Not talking about Unaltered vs special editions, just how good is the quality of what we ARE seeing?

I’ve clicked on comparisons between various releases, and sometimes I get to the point where one part of a still pic may look better in one version, but looking at a different part of the same pic may look better on another version. Eventually I just get lost and have no idea what color or how dark anything should be anymore.

All I can say is to my untrained eye when I view them, I haven’t seen the Originals look this good in a long time, but I am at a severe disadvantage because I don’t have access to 4K77, only pics from it online.

Is this new Disney+ 4K HDR version indeed comparable in quality to 4K77, aside from not being the unaltered version? Could something better than everything we currently have available be achieved if someone else was given complete access and control?

The colors are actually pretty close to 4K77. As for the scan, I’m not sure the SE can look better.

I wonder if people should be taking a closer look at the 04/11 changes to see if they’ve been newly done. In the comparison of the rocks in front of R2 and every shot is slightly different from the BD.

I noticed a slight adjustment to the Star Wars logo at the start of The Mandalorian. Is this new with the premier of The Mandalorian or has it been around for a while?

I believe it’s new, yeah.

I also don’t know that I like it. Not the redesign, I guess I’m fine with that. I guess I just don’t see the need for the logo at all. I prefer just the Lucasfilm logo fading in and out.

Yeah I don’t really understand the point. Anyone watching knows it’s Star Wars. Why not just use the “long time ago” title card? I don’t get it.

So far Lucasfilm is 0 for 2 at coming up with something “new” for the pre-titles. First it was that botched fanfare edit for the Lucasfilm logo, and now it’s… this very unnecessary thing.

Huh, I kinda liked all the shiny helmets with the colorful lights and stuff. It is ok to make new things sometimes…

Interesting. Looks like the sort of logo you’d use if maybe you wanted to have the SW logo at the top of a crawl.

Which is funny because I believe that’s EXACTLY what they did for the Clone Wars Season 7 trailer.

This might be off topic, but exactly how do you download a movie or show from Disney+? I got it on launch day and I’m still trying to figure out how to download a movie or show to my PC.

I believe that’s only for mobile. At least that option only appears when I use the app on my phone. Too risque to download a 4k file to your computer. I imagine it makes pirating difficult.

Since it’s already pirated I don’t think so, but I see what you’re saying.

John Campea stood correct on that The Mandalorian would be the most pirated show of all time. Just think about how fans in other countries outside the U.S. feel about this considering that Disney+ is exclusive in America.

Don’t know who that is, but I think pretty much anyone could have predicted that.

This is John Campea. A very active film pundit in the movie community online.
