4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 294

I’d love to see someone comparing screenshots for AOTC, since I was hoping for the theatrical grading coming back for quite some time. It was very vivid and dared to have strong reds and blues. In the blu-ray it all went to orange and teal.
As I understand from the comments the grade is somewhere “in between” of those versions, but it would be great to see it. (I’m from germany, so no Disney+ for me right now 😉

Final scene of the film.

2019 master:

Looking at that image I think I understand why it looks somewhat desaturated. They went for natural skin tones and it looks fine there. I guess film aging has affected more cyan and yellow…
Anyway, I prefer this conservative approach. Seeing bright pink persons it worse than desaturation.

The new masters are now also on google play/youtube.

Not in the UK they’re not. Still the 2011 digital versions.Just found that out the hard way. 😦 That’s £10 i’m not getting back

They will be changed to the new master automatically. That happened to me. Yesterday they still were the 2011 versions, today they’ve been replaced.

But isn’t this likely to happen only in areas that have got Disney+?

Could the desaturated look be a result of the streaming compression? Vudu undoubtedly uses a higher bitrate than Disney+, closer to what you’d be seeing on an actual blu-ray. A proper screenshot comparison will tell the story.

Also, since no one’s brought it up yet, presumably the new 4k masters are what will be used from now on for the dcp’s that get sent out to theaters?

I was able to watch A NEW HOPE in full today.

The 5.1 mix was also quite impressive.

Have they fixed all the errors in the sound mix? Muted music, unbalanced ADRs, and was there even mixed channels?

The ADR still sounded rough for the film, but was still better than the Blu-ray.

The SDR grade is identical to the Blu-ray (at least to my eyes). I have yet to thoroughly check the HDR grade though.

That’s possible, although it could just be that the rolling out will take a little time. For example up till yesterday I could only watch the 4K versions on Disney+ with a VPN, because here in The Netherlands we still had the 2011 versions. Then yesterday they were suddenly replaced by the new master, and available in 4K HDR, while today they were added to google/youtube here. So, it might become available in the UK via digital services in the next few days, even though Disney+ will take a little longer.

No, compression or resolution won’t affect saturation.

But HDR vs SDR colorspace and brightness will make a difference.
SDR has a smaller colorspace, so it’s less saturated by definition.

Anyone noticed any significant audio changes?
Obi-wan’s dragon call?
Has the ADR or on-set audio been played around with to sound better?

Same call as 2011, and the ADR / on-set audio still sounds bad, though I honestly doubt there’s a way around that.

Seeing the screenshot comparisons between the 19SE and the 04/11 reminds me in a big way of the differences between the old blu-ray of The Matrix (which, it’s worth noting, would’ve also been from an hd master created in 2004 just like the OT blu-ray) and the remastered-in-4k blu-ray included with the UHD release.

Can you guys make some more comparisons? I’m very curious about the Battle of Yavin, Endor, and Hoth. Also Cloud City.

From my experience so far with Disney+, you have to be careful how you watch it. I tried 3 ways and got three totally different results. I have a Samsung phone and TV and through both those apps played on that device, the picture is screwed up. The phone is properly saturated but too dark. The TV was desaturated but was the correct lightness. When I stream from my phone to the TV via Chromecast, it was perfect. I tested this with seveal films and it seems to be the 4k content. The older films in HD look the same no matter which way you view them. I contacted Disney+ support and this is a known issue. So be careful how you watch the movies to judge what the colors really are.

The problem that I have with the Disney+ color remasters is that the teal is slightly noticeable, the picture looks a bit too dark, and the colors are desaturated in some places. Most evidently with Tatooine’s sand in A New Hope.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

Mandalorian is “out there” in 4K HDR, so the drm has clearly been broken on day one, so I think for those of us who won’t get D+ until 2021 (and believe me, if I could get it now, I’d be the first in line), someone will put the new masters out as well.

Yes, I’m curious too. Also, how are the Alderaan and Death Star explosions?
Did they forget to redo any of the subtle 2004/2011 changes? Like the cell block “bars melt”, for example?

How is the paint out of Sebastian Shaw’s eyebrows in ROTJ? Does it look any different?

Apparently the only way to snag the files is through Nvidia Shield, and each time you do it, they ban that specific hardware so you have to use a brand new Shield each time. There’s also the fact that the “release group” doesn’t share their DRM crack. So I wouldn’t expect any more WEB-DL releases to come out of Disney+ for a while, it’ll probably just be WEBRIP recordings from an HDMI splitter, and even if that isn’t the case, a pirate group like that isn’t likely to spend $200 per film or episode to rip something that “already exists” in some form over entirely new content like The Mandalorian.

Having just watched the Mandalorean, which was graded by the same colorist as the OT, I can see what they are going for. It’s revisionist, but in a less radical way.The Mandalorean is awesome by the way.

Would you say they are putting everything in line with the grading of Rogue One? Standardising / flattening the colors…

Yes, I think so. The Mandalorean in particular has a very barren look to it. I think the Star Wars movie/tv universe will look more gritty from now on.

Yeah that’s about in line with what I suspected.

The melted bars are there. Haven’t checked out ESB or ROTJ myself yet.

Shaw’s eyebrows look different to me, but that might just be the colors.

JEDIT: They’re totally different, and much much more seamless.

Seeing as the new masters are now on Vudu, Amazon, GooglePlay, etc in various parts of the world, a DRM’d 1080p SDR version should come soon… hopefully. These masters need to be seen.
