Thanks stretch009, much appreciated👍. However they’re from the retail DVDs.

So I just registered for this purpose. I would love to bring back the original episodes. I could buy the box set and start capturing but I don’t have the funds for it. How would I go about starting up a funding for it? I would need a good capture device and the boxset. Right now I think the boxset would be USD 300 and capture hardware could be bought for under USD 200 probably.

When I worked at Lowry Digital Images, we restored the entire Young Indiana Jones Chronicles at 1080p at least, though I’m pretty sure it was a higher resolution than that. So the HD masters are out there.

Ooooooooooohh…

That is so cool. I wonder why they aren’t releasing them along with the movies?

JimJimBinks - 7 years ago

I don’t know. Maybe they’re prepping for a bigger release. At the time Lucas made the Young Indy Chronicles, he wanted it all to be for sale on an “Interactive CD-ROM” complete with learning materials about actual historical events talked about or shown in each episode.

Where did that quote come from?

Apologies for bumping this thread again, are there still offers of sharing the unaltered versions of Young Indy?

Many thanks

I still really need to do mine…

How is this coming along? Dying to see it!

Please do not spend that much on one of those box sets. I own one. I have the means to rip it. And I only spent $66. Do not give these scammers the satisfaction.

Besides, the laser disc set is not what we should be ripping— what we want is the Australian VHS tapes. I have two of the six volumes, but no PAL VCR. Would gladly rip them if I could get a compatible VCR. The laser discs have hardcoded Japanese subtitles.

Thought I’d post this if of interest, the opening/closing bookends with George Hall (watermarked though) there’s also quite a few introductions with George Lucas and VHS promos on YouTube too, would be awesome to see all of this pulled together as a preservation

Hi everyone! Now that we’re on quarantine, I’m catching up with the movies and series I haven’t been able to watch before, due to, you know, work, family, hobbies, etc.

Never had the money to buy the original Indy chronicles so I’ve downloaded them some years ago. What I’ve got is this:

• Chapter 1: My First Adventure
Egypt - 1908

• Chapter 2: Passion for Life
Paris - 1908, Kenya - 1909

• Chapter 3: The Perils of Cupid
Florence/Vienna - 1908

• Chapter 4: Travels with Father
Greece/Russia - 1910

• Chapter 5: Journey of Radiance
India/China - 1910

• Chapter 6: Spring Break Adventure
Mexico - 1916

• Chapter 7: Love’s Sweet Song
Ireland/London - 1916

• Chapter 8: The Trenches of Hell
Germany - 1916

• Chapter 9: Demons of Deception
Verdun/Paris - 1916

• Chapter 10: Phantom Train of Doom
Germany/East Africa - 1916

• Chapter 11: Oganga: The Giver and Taker of Life
Congo - 1916

• Chapter 12: Attack of the Hawkmen
Austria - 1917

• Chapter 13: Adventures in the Secret Service
Austria/Russia - 1917

• Chapter 14: Espionage Escapades
Spain/Prague - 1917

• Chapter 15: Daredevils of the Desert
Palestine - 1917

• Chapter 16: Tales of Innocence
Monaco/Italy - 1917

• Chapter 17: Masks of Evil
Istanbul/Transylvania - 1918

• Chapter 18: Treasure of the Peacock’s Eye
Egypt/Java/South Pacific - 1919

• Chapter 19: The Winds of Change
Paris/Princeton - 1919

• Chapter 20: Mystery of the Blues
Chicago - 1920

• Chapter 21: Scandal of 1920
New York - 1920

• Chapter 22: Hollywood Follies
Hollywood - 1920

The chapters are one hour and a half long. Then, on Wikipedia, I saw a list of chapters with a lot more episodes than what I have. The names and the order of them are different too!
Would somebody be so kind and explain me WTH is going on? Can I watch the episodes I have in the order they are? Do I need to look for more episodes so as to have the complete collection? THX in advance!

So I just went through a couple of those France 4 rips to compare the Old Indy segments to the US airings. These being the most important parts as there are 8 episodes that have never had any official release in any region with the old indy segments. So if one were trying to make “original airing” preservations these are required.

Welp, bad news. In ‘Benares January 1919’ (which is one of the aforementioned episodes with no official release in any region) specifically they’ve edited off seconds here and there making them incomplete. Assume this was to make the dub easier and not have to sync mouths as much. A few sections that previously had someone talking on camera is now swapped to off camera with a different person silently reacting to the words.

I haven’t had a chance to go through the entire episodes to compare but just going off of the old indy segments it doesn’t look good.

There are also advertisement pop ups with modern shows. That is annoying.

Not to mention they do this quite often...

Additionally there is the usual frame blending done on 23.97fps sources converted to PAL. Another mess to untangle.

Oh yeah, and cropping. This is typical of 4:3 content modernized for 16:9 tv’s. They ever so slightly crop the image to something more like 14:9 and then letterbox the rest of it.

In these example pics look at her shoes, the cigarette machine, that arrow up top…

french

In summary, I wouldn’t use them for preservations. Nice to have I suppose. Maybe the episodes themselves are more intact but I have my doubts. Not to mention the cropping and frame rate issues will still be there regardless.

For those that have access to TV Vault and Spleen I have just finished the edit of these Season 1 episodes and taken the old run episodes from ABC poor quality but used the sound to redub these superior French versions back into English so they match as close as possible to the as broadcast episodes.

First off thanks for doing this!

Curious, where did you get your copies of the ABC release?

Thanks for doing this, looks great and looking forward to grabbing. A supreme effort. With this and retartedted’s edits of Ewoks & Droids I’ve been truly blessed (thanks again for those) Thank you and glad that the French versions were of use 😛

Your welcome, not a massive fan but killed a week in lockdown redubbing them.

Will leave season 2 and 3 to a fan of the show.

How would one go about accessing these rips if they don’t have access to tv vault or spleen? I’ve been looking for these versions for nearly 15 years.

I too am not a part of TV Vault or Spleen. However, it looks like someone has been restoring them to the original format on YouTube… https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaeMV8OeMJZz2zl7YpHTj1Q
The quality isn’t the highest, but Old Indy is back. I’ll be checking them out on that channel until some of these are available elsewhere.

That’s great news, thanks for sharing! Checking them out aswell, with hope & dreams for remastered quality (+ subtitles) some day eventually in this century.

PS: About subtitles, this for the mentioned “new” Youtube-version isn’t something that might be lying around in the dust on the www, right? I find some of the “local” european (etc) actors’ accents a bit hard to understand comfortably (but at the same making it authentic in a good way naturally, which is one of many great things about this series)!

If I read this correctly, you are looking for subtitles of the YT episodes? I believe the YT versions have English subtitles available that you can activate and would be downloaded alongside the video if archiving with something like Jdownloader. At least that’s the case in my region.

If you’re looking for other subtitles, I’m not sure where to direct you unfortunately.

Anyone know where one would be able to find hi-res images of the posters Struzan did for the individual VHS releases of young Indy? I can’t find them anywhere. Thanks!

They’re not quite hi-res but the best quality Young Indy Struzan artwork I’ve managed to find is on the Young Indiana Jones Music site.
https://www.youngindianajonesmusic.com/cue-lists/06-spring-break-adventure

Thank you! This helps a lot. Looks like some of them have been replaced with posters by another artist. Still, the ones by Struzan that are there are much better quality than I’ve been able to find. It’s crazy that some artwork by an artist like Struzan is so hard to find.
