I think this Imperial Remnant’s last ditch shot at establishing some dominance comes in the form of a plan to attempt cloning historically force sensitive beings (Yodas) and genetically modifying them somehow, which would, of course, resonate pretty strongly with The Mandalorian, who remembers how a mercenary thief wearing his culture’s stolen armor agreed to a similar bargain before the Clone Wars started - said wars, of course, leaving him a foundling and scarring him for life.
Essentially, Herzog’s character might be asking himself “Why did the Jedi decide to clone a stupid bounty hunter when they could have cloned their greatest master?” and now a Mandalorian bounty hunter has to decide between restoring his honor (and his culture) by honoring this imperial’s requests in return for all the beskar he could want, or denying this imperial the chance to re-establish their rule through the exploitation of this Yadpole, and saving Baby Yoda from being cloned by the Empire’s mad scientists.
Or maybe it’s none of that, who knows.
I don’t think the timeline makes sense for it to be a clone in response to the Jango clones though.
Why not? All they have to do is look backwards. “We have access to cloning. What should we clone. What did they clone LAST time they cloned something. What if we cloned something DIFFERENT?”
The show has already gone, and will return again, to Clone War period. It’s a pretty organic throughline if they choose to follow it. “Find me a Yoda” “We need it alive” “Well, even if we get one dead, I’m sure we can do something with it.”
or maybe I’m off entirely. Probably am. But it seems to me like there’s some built-in parallels there if you tie the protecting of this potential Imperial Target to this guy whose life and culture was irrevocably altered by the events of the Clone War.

I’m sort of curious about how tracking forbs work. Basically it is like a GPS to the target’s exact location. How does that work? Is this a creature that was already in their possession and was taken, or are they trying to capture it for the first time? It seems the tracker was able to known which room the target was in, so they are somehow able to isolate its location.
Were the henchman guarding the room actually invested in the baby’s safety, or were they also in it for the money?
Maybe the Yoda’s species’ natural affinity with the Force makes them the best candidates for making Force-sensitive clones, and maybe a Force-sensitive clone army is this remnants long-term plan for reestablishing order. The Yoda species seem to have a very long growth period, but cloning allows for age acceleration, making the idea a bit more feasible maybe. Though honestly I would be surprised if their plan is this straightforward, because all I can picture is them having an army of Force-sensitive gremlins!
At the very least, it seems thatthe Empire’s interest in the Yoda species is on the basis of genetics, and all we know about them is that they might be naturally gifted with the Force. So maybe their genes are the key in creating Force-sensitive clones in general?

The argument that something being similar to something else makes it bad is just as stupid as the argument that something being similar to something else is good.
Truth be told, I’m not sure how one could have a strong reaction to the episode one way or the other.

This was my biggest pet peeve of the episode. Also all the random “Easter eggs” like roasted Salacious Crumb and the Gonk droid.

Yeah while watching I thought it odd that they recycled the Imperial Spy’s dialog from SW and the gatekeeper droid’s dialog from ROTJ but then recorded new Gonk sounds.

…uhh so tell the bounty hunter all the details, and on the off chance he gets captured/interrogated, someone else not beholden to original contract could bargen with that Imperial dude for stipulations he didn’t want to be a part of.
Or given the lack of trust between these two individuals, there’s a chance the bounty hunter could bail out on the mission and decide to sell/leak the information, forfeiting the chance to claim the yadpole.

I like the 70’s spaghetti western feeling parts of the score a lot for this.
I’m waiting for episode 2 this Friday to make any stronger judgements about it, tho. It was honestly just fine for most of it, and the genuinely good wasn’t as good as it could’ve been.
This is a minor nitpick, but it seems odd that Mando uses carbonite to transport his prisoners when they established in ESB that freezing people in carbonite is likely to kill them. Is it common knowledge that Han Solo was frozen this way?

There’s wiggle room in that Vader comments on Cloud City’s facility being crude. And there was an episode of TCW where Anakin and company were frozen to infiltrate someplace.
