4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 281

Yeah, I’m curious if it’s a new transfer or just upscales of the existing ones.

Here in the Netherlands the were and are still only available in HD (2011 version), and it’s the 12th over here, with the Mandelorian already available (won’t be watching it until Thursday with my brother though).

Just checked and they’re all in 4K DOLBY VISION + ATMOS. Watching A New Hope now… color grading is vastly superior to the blu ray color grading and more similar to 4K77 and/or the technicolor prints albeit with special edition add-ons.

Also - there’s more edits/additions… after Han says “I bet you have” to Greedo, there’s another close up shot of Greedo saying something before Greedo shoots and misses.

For real? Could you possibly take screenshots of the colour grading, or film a clip of the changes (or even just do a quick phone recording if that’s not feasible)?

It’s quite concerning if they’re still making changes, and outright changing the timing of scenes by adding shots, in 2019. I wonder if Lucas was consulted?

Quite curious to see if any other changes were made. If Hayden is in TROS, it’d be great if they could’ve filmed him properly for the end of Jedi instead of using a costume test.

Still, it’s awful they’d still be making changes while not allowing the original versions to be seen alongside them.

The change doesn’t make any sense. There’s seemingly no reason to make such an alteration, and it only serves to make the scene worse.

Therefore, it would seem the culprit is obvious.

Thanks for the screenshots, Han Solo.

But man… that looks nothing like a 4k remaster. Just like another color grading.
The Solo/Greedo scene is like an abuse of an old rotten corpse, at that point. How many changes did they make to this scene until now?

That’s the fifth version. It’s been changed in '97, '04, '11, and now in '19. Seems like a ~7 year itch for George.

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

Yeah, it looks worse than 4K77 if those screenshots are telling the full story.

Unclear to me whether it’s a new transfer or just regraded colors. It looks darker and higher contrast, but I’m comparing HDR to non-HDR so maybe it’d be closer if I look later on my computer which can’t display it.

For one thing, Vader’s saber during the infamous part of ESB looks perfect. Same for ROTJ.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Can you give a bit more detail of what you mean by this? What indicates it isn’t a remaster?

I noticed that one shot of Obi-Wan’s saber in A New Hope was fixed so that it doesn’t look like a stick anymore.

Yep I was just thinking. Doesn’t this make the Greedo scene the only scene in all the Star Wars films that’s been changed with EVERY release since 1997??? No wonder it’s the most infamous change!

Is that the shot at the end of the first part of the dual with Vader?? If so that was first corrected in 2004.

No, they’re right, they put a core on the blade in 4K, in 04 they just put the glow layer.

Somebody ought to make “Han spoke last” T-shirts.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

I don’t have the technical knowledge many here have. All I can say is The Original Trilogy looks better on Disney+ than the official blu-rays. I don’t know if any of it is the new transfer Gareth Edwards talked about seeing when he made Rogue One, or is it just the better colors of HDR Dolby Vision.

I was all set to relax my criticism of the special editions and just enjoy seeing The Original Trilogy in higher resolution and better colors… but they had to go and alter it AGAIN! SERIOUSLY?!

Can you imagine if every time the released the Godfather movies or Casablanca, they altered it somehow and never released the originals?

I haven’t seen 4K77, I only have the Harmy blu-rays, but they remain my definitive source, and I’m so thankful to have them, especially now. Not sure I’ll live to see the true versions officially released again. I believe Lucas would have never stopped tinkering, but I’d never have thought this would happen after the Disney purchase. I thought they would finally release the unaltered versions.

I loved the Mandalorian and I am excited for the other new series, but also very sad regarding hope for the unaltered versions. This is such a very odd mixed-feeling kinda day.

Is this a brand new audio mix as well? It has the Threepio narration over the death star plans and also has “Close the blast doors!”
