Terminator 2 Judgment Day (1991). Regraded + Partially DeRemastered + Regrained (Released)

Yes, only some of the changes are fixed šŸ˜¦
I found to big issues:

  1. The remastered BD has more detail than the old BD (much more). When cropping and pasting, the difference itā€™s noticeable. In some cases particularly distracting. The bike jump scene was the one that made me drop the idea. Pasting the original ā€œArnieā€™s faceā€ back made the fix too distracting.
  2. They are different scans. To fix the changes you have to rescale, adjust rotation, color match the two scenes, and if you have the HDDVD or the 2015 BD as source for the original version, degrain it. The PQ difference, itā€™s just to big and thereā€™s also one more thing you can do nothing about: the scan. When scanning a film there are some stretching and pinch effects that might be noticeable between two different scans. A comparison is the best way to describe it. Hereā€™s a frame from The Terminator where you can see very clearly what Iā€™m talking about:
    https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=241&y=314&d1=1563&d2=1564&s1=14761&s2=14777&l=0&i=1&go=1
When fixing Arnieā€™s face in the bike jump scene, the still frames looked fine but it was noticeable in motion. Not to mention the obvious difference in PQ. Same for the equipment visible when the T-1000 is driving the truck chasing John and the stuntman in the back seat when escaping from Pescadero (blurry stains if you ask me). Just too distracting.
So in the end, I fixed only the most obvious changes (T-1000 secret gun, truckā€™s flying windows, Van Damme look alike stuntman, Arnieā€™s face riding away from the truckā€™s explosion).

From what I understand, you used the 2017 Remastered Blu-ray?

Yes.

it looks fantastic!
going to have a look for it tonight. Thanks!

I donā€™t have a 35mm print or anything. I used the old BD as a general color reference (just to give an idea of the colors, but not to match them in anyway).

Yes.

Are you aware of the problems with it?

It seems to me that the whole point of this project is to attempt to fix those problems as much as can be done with what is available, and based on the screencaps it looks like he did a fantastic job. Yes, It is obvious that DNR was used on this transfer, but all issues aside there is no denying that this is by far the most detailed video source that has ever been commercially released for this film.

Are there more issues besides DNR, color timing, and a few digital fixes, all of which seem to be addressed with this project?

T2 on 35mm looks nowhere near as detailed as the bluray. Iā€™d say the resolution in the print is a lot closer to 1K than it is to 2K.

Also all the CGI special effects scenes are more contrasty to the rest of the film. The effects hold up and look good, but the difference is obvious on film as they donā€™t have the density of celluloid. Your T1 example is similar to the difference when thereā€™s a CGI shot - the contrast suddenly goes way up, very noticeable.

Yes I fixed some of the remastered CGI changes. The goal was fix all of them, but some were simply too noticeable. I dropped the idea. Only the most obvious ones are fixed.

Is this due to the fact that the negative is Super 35, and any print would be an optical crop and blow-up to anamorphic 35mm?

No, Titanic was shot on Super 35 as well, but is considerably more detailed. Also you canā€™t pull out detail that isnā€™t in the negative, and as the remastered bluray is more detailed it shows there is full 2K resolution (or close to it) in the negative even when cropped. Thatā€™s what you expect with Super 35 really as youā€™re not using the full are of the film for picture, films shot that way tend to use the highest resolution (finest grain) negative film stocks available. The film was shown on 70mm as well, so they must have been able to pull out more detail for the 70mm prints. So the low resolution isnā€™t due to the negative itself, itā€™s due to the choice of film stocks used for the prints as well as the intermediary process.

If you ever get to see the film on 35mm, and there will be places showing prints, youā€™ll see that compared with other 35mm films itā€™s on the lower side of detail and resolution. Youā€™d think because it was a highly anticipated blockbuster that itā€™d be on the higher side, but that just isnā€™t so.

Anyway no digital distributor would ever release it looking the way it did on 35mm, it doesnā€™t look ā€œbadā€ by 35mm standards, but itā€™s certainly soft and low resolution, probably about 1K detail. True Lies is probably similar to the detail in T2, but I havenā€™t seen that projected in a cinema.

The film looks amazing. And I have really only one thing I could complain about: itā€™s not the extended cut šŸ˜›
So really well done! And thanks for sharing šŸ˜ƒ

Hi

I was really looking forward to view this one, as the remastered version leaves little to be desired. And it seems like Iā€™m a little to late, as it looks like the torrent has been removed/expired (from kickass)?

Is there any other way to get this release, or if someone maybe could point me in the right direction?

Thanks.
IMO, the theatrical is the one and only version. I saw the extended years ago once.
Just one time. šŸ˜„

quick question, do you intend on including the original 5.1 CDS mix?, (found on the original 1997 dvd by live in DD and the 2003 pioneer dvd in full bitrate dts), im a big fan of it over the later 5.1 remix, either that or the original stereo would be awsome

I second this! The screenshots look great. Would love to see this.

EDIT: Whoops, looks like I spoke too soon. I think I found it. jam666, it should still be there! File size and date align with the info in the first post.

On myspleen this awesome version was released. Check out the write up:

The mission here is to hopefully provide the best possible viewing and listening experience of T2 that we can get, using the latest 2017 StudioCanal ā€œremasteredā€ transfer as the main source.

First, a big thank you and credit to sanjuro_61 for his release of this film that we used as a basis to work from, found here: https://forum.fanres.com/thread-2885.html

Further alterations from his release as follows:

VIDEO

  • Painstaking regrading of the film, not just scene to scene but in some cases shot to shot or even single frames where necessary in order to restore the film to something closer to previous releases (This took a lonnng time!)

  • Restored bendy knife in bar scene

  • Restored stuntmanā€™s head in the slo-mo bike jump scene

  • Replaced shots throughout film where lost detail could not be recovered from the 2017 transfer by using the 2015 Lionsgate transfer instead, with additional regrading to match the rest of the film

ā€“ We decided to use the 2015 transfer for the first shot of the T800 crushing the skull with the pink lasers overhead, as removing the ridiculous amount of blue was not possible with the 2017 transfer

ā€“ The lava at the end of the film has been turned to yellow with too much detail lost in the process, so the 2015 transfer was favoured in some shots

  • Cropped a shot in the car after the Sarah Connor asylum breakout due to presence of border of projected backdrop being visible in 2017 transfer

AUDIO (THEATRICAL)

  • DTS-HD MA 5.1 (StudioCanal 2017)
  • DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Lionsgate 2015)
  • DTS-HD MA ā€œ6.1ā€ (Skynet 2009)
  • Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (Japanese Premium Edition 2008)
  • DTS-HD MA 5.1 (French CDS Mix ā€œRemasterā€ 2008)
  • DTS 5.1 (Japanese CDS Mix 2003) [Thanks to Chewtobacca for his resync of this]

So, Iā€™m not completely happy with the sync up of the 2008 CDS ā€œRemasterā€ audio, but itā€™s as good as I can get it really and is still very watchable. If anyone else wants to have a crack, go nuts.

I have the Lionsgate 2015 audio as the default selected track.

  • Inserting and regrading of Special Edition scenes to match the rest of the film

AUDIO

  • DTS-HD MA 7.1 (Ultimate Lionsgate Hybrid 2020)
  • DTS-HD MA 7.1 (Ultimate Premium CDS Lionsgate Hybrid 2020)
  • DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Premium CDS Lionsgate Hybrid 2020)
  • DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Lionsgate 2015)
  • DTS-HD MA ā€œ6.1ā€ (Skynet 2009)
  • DTS-HD HR 7.1 (German Ultimate Edition 2008) [Thanks to Kurtos for sending me this rarity - only present on a German HD-DVD from 2008 for some reason!]
  • Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (Japanese Premium Edition 2008)

They botched the timing of the Special Edition scenes with the StudioCanal 2017 audio, so I didnā€™t include it.

The top three tracks for SE, I put together myself. I found that the volume of the German Ultimate Edition 7.1 was set too high, ā€œbrickwallingā€ it more so than other remixes, so I took the side surrounds from the German Ultimate Edition 7.1 and lowered them accordingly to match the Lionsgate L, R, C, LFE and rear surround channels, which are identical more or less to the German Ultimate Edition anyway, but with a higher bitrate and less brickwalled. So if you want a remixed 7.1 experience, the first track is probably the way to go.

The third track is the Japanese theatrical CDS Mix, with Lionsgate SE scenes spliced in for L, R, C and LFE. I took the rear channels from the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Japanese Premium Edition for SE scenes, as their volume levels matched more closely to the CDS Mix without any need for editing. Other than the volume being lower, theyā€™re identical to the Lionsgate. This is as close as it gets to watching the film with original audio, if youā€™re interested in SE.

The second track is the CDS Mix L, R, C and LFE channels. with Lionsgate SE scenes spliced in for L, R, C and LFE, combined with the side surrounds from the German Ultimate Edition, with volume adjusted accordingly to match the CDS. Most people would consider this blasphemous, but if you want that original mix with 7.1, use this Tongue

I have the Lionsgate 2015 audio as the default selected track.

I can only find a regrade that is half of the file size and it also seems like another edit, is there a place where I can find Sanjuroā€™s untouched restoration?
