Starfx has been working on his own restoration of The Brave Little Toaster with me. But, for some reason, he hasn’t been answering my many messages to him over the past month, even though I know he’s had recent activity on OT.com.

…and this is what happens when you don’t take the advice I gave to you seriously

You get BANNED.

Not surprised, really.

Just noting how I have been looking at my NTSC-DVD copy and… Good Lord! I hate Variable Frame Rate (VFR) DVD’s!

Syncing with other sources is a Female Dog!

I have synched it to the 5.1 mix from the American DVD which lined up perfectly with the audio.

You do know the American DVD has censored audio, right?

Censored? How so?

Hi all, I made this account to share some email correspondence I had with Jerry Rees in 2014, where I asked him what aspect ratio The Brave Little Toaster was intended to be. Jerry responded as follows:

Hi Teamo,
It warms my heart to know that you enjoyed the film growing up.
During production, all of us anticipated a theatrical release first, then a video release. So I took care to make sure that everything composed primarily for 1.85:1 aspect ratio, but would also look decent in 4:3. As each shot was planned, we would check both formats.
A letterboxed 1.85:1 version would most accurately represent how I envisioned the audience experience.
Warmest regards,
Jerry

So here’s hoping a copy of the original still exists somewhere.

Hello, I discovered that a UMD version existed, released in France and in Netherlands.
French name: Le petit grille pain courageux
Netherlands name: Het Dappere Broodroostertje

There is no English track, and the cover indicates a 1.33 format.
If anyone has this UMD, it would be interesting to compare it to DVDs

Ok so why isn’t Disney releasing this remastered?

Does anyone know what master they’re using for Disney+?

I think it’s just the sequels that are scheduled for release on Disney+, if I’m not mistaken.

Could have sworn it was listed on the Twitter thread…

Was going through this thread a few year late… whew, what a roller coaster of emotions. I don’t suppose anything was ever released by anyone? Was checking my US DVD and noticed how terrible it looked, which lead me here.

So I’ve loved this movie since I was a kid. Unfortunately the dvd is pretty poor quality. So I’ve taken up the task of doing a restoration of this classic, as well as collecting the actual items that inspired the characters. I’ve already ripped the dvd and unconverted it to 1080p. About to finish my first render to see what adjustments I need to make.

Now that I would love to see.

I did do a little form of an attempt (Years ago…) of taking some of the US DVD audio, speed down the UK DVD that surfaced, fix where the audio blacks out from the UK Release…

But again, this was mostly because I wanted to get it done quickly so I can quickly give a review for the movie.

The UK release seems to be the best quality as far as I can see… Using a fresh transfer while the US release uses the LaserDics release…

Just wanted to let everyone know I’m going to attempt a preservation of this movie, which I have fond memories of from childhood. I just purchased the UK DVD off Amazon UK (spent too much but what are you going to do). I’m going to attempt to sync it to the US DVD 5.1 audio and then upscale to 1080p using Topaz VEAI.

I noticed the US DVD is 29.97 fps so there must be some kind of pulldown going on. To sync to the PAL video to the audio, does anyone know if I should aim for 23.976 fps or 24 on the dot?

30 FPS is normally the standard for TV Broadcasts. I would consider going with 24 FPS (In my opinion) because it gives the cinematic look to it and it fits more into a movie than anything else.

If this makes any sense to anyone…

My simple PAL Video/NTSC Audio Remix and my 1080p AI upscale will be available soon. Here is a comparison shot:
https://imgsli.com/OTExMTM/0/1

The upscaling process scrubs a lot of grain so in the upscaled version I added a fine 35mm grain plate overlayed at 60% opacity. Should I go even heavier on the regraining? (Go full screen for a better look)

I have a coarser grain plate available, and/or I can increase the opacity. I’m just hesistant to add too much.

Moley Holy, That upscale looks tremendous! And in my personal opinion, this looks good for me.
