Ewan McGregor Interview In Playboy

Here's an excerpt from Ewan's recent interview in Playboy. Pretty much sums up the Prequels to me.....

McGregor: Star Wars has been important in my career, though the movies were hard to make.

Playboy: In what way?

McGregor: They were horrendously difficult because you do so much of your work in front of a blue screen. Backgrounds and effects are added later. It's tedious, and there's no soul to them. By the nature of those movies, all the creative work is done afterward. They don't spend nearly as long on the acting as they do on everything else.

Playboy: Harrison Ford once told George Lucas, "You can type this shit, George, but you sure can't say it." Is he right? Is the dialogue particularly difficult for an actor?

McGregor: If you had really good dialogue in a Star Wars movie, it wouldn't be a Star Wars movie anymore. The people are two-dimensional, which has almost become the style. I loved being in them. Among the nicest things for me was meeting Hayden Christensen, who is great, and Natalie Portman, because I think she's a wonderful girl as well as incredibly bright and passionate.

Great interview, by the way. This guy is easily going to be the Harrison Ford of this trilogy and go on to amazing things. I wish the guy all the best. He's truly awesome!!!

Another interesting part...

Playboy: Was it intimidating to take on such a prominent role in this legendary series?

McGregor: My uncle, who played a tiny role in the first movies as the pilot Wedge Antilles, warned me about it and advised me not to get involved.

Playboy: What was his objection?

McGregor: To this day he receives fan mail and gets asked to sign books written about him, all from having a small part in Star Wars. He finds the whole thing fucking ridiculous, so after his experience he was against it. He asked, "Would you like a career after you're 30?" The danger, I suppose, is that you get stuck in it and never get out. But I've managed not to.

I love to see at least one of the actors being honest for a change about the prequels(Anthony Daniels was the last one I heard about that spoke about them being lifeless).
"I don't mind if you don't like my manners. I don't like them myself. They're pretty bad. I grieve over them during the long winter evenings."

He has talked about his uncle in other interviews as well, I dont remeber which ones right now.

I'd love to see GL's reaction to all the actors who said bluescreen-based films are bad. Unfortunally he seems to avoid these kind of questions, focusing only on SW itself.

Regarding Dennis Lawson (got the name right? ewans uncle?) finding it being ridiculous, well that's the price to pay for being in SW, of course he didn't know it when he was on ANH, but that's a risk you take when you do ANY movie, you become a public figure and people tend to mix up actor and character. So to all the actors all there: stop complaining and sign the freaking autographs... Unless you're Sir Alec Guiness, then you have the right to rip off SW letters, since you did so much apart from SW.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I actually have a photo of Obi-Wan and Vader duellling signed by Dave Prowse and Sir Alec. Prowse will sign anything though.

I don't buy the magazine....I'm a member of the Cyber Club and they post the current interview every month.

I don't know about you, but the articles and the Advisor are great. I haven't gotten to all the stuff with these girls though...

Haven't you seen Chappell's Third World Girls Gone Wild?

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

Isn't it interesting that Ewan is in both the biggest moneymaker of the year and one of the most expensive flops of the summer?

He's a living, breathing yin-yang. I'm still not sure if he's a big star or a very well known actor.

I'd say he's a fairly well known actor. People just won't go see him for any old movie he's in like they would with Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks.

Exactly, he's not a movie STAR, whose name would be responsible for the ticket selling. He still have that "indie movie" aura around him... Which is good, because he didn't get steriotyped and didn't get his image "defined" by SW as Mark Hamill did. I think he'll eventually turn into something like Steve Buscemi... get smaller parts, smaller movies, but being a good and respected actor, and doing the parts he wants.

Ewan McGregor is a real ACTOR. He's currently acting in the London west end production of Guys and Dolls. He should forget about these stupid star vehicles and do what he does best. Hollywood wants to turn him into a star, he should just act.
