Chronologically Lost HD (Remaster of Mike Maloney's edit) (Released) SEND PM FOR LINKS, DON'T REPLY ON THREAD

I was rewatching the ‘Chronologically Lost’ edit recently and while it was nice to revisit, it was certainly feeling dated now with its quality, which was expected being done around the time the series was finishing and even Mike himself said doing it in HD would be quite a task.

Fan edits isn’t something I’ve done much of, so I wasn’t sure if this was something I could do,. Surely is something I would have liked to see if someone else had done it but no idea who would want to re-edit all 100+ episodes again. 😄

The big thing that’ll help with this remaster is a consistent source used for all episodes as the original did have areas that had HDTV recording used (Season 6 area) and certain episodes that were stretched (S2E9 What Kate Did was more horizontally stretched), as well as being edited in 30fps (for some reason).

As far as split screens go, for the most part it’s the same as the original, but I’ve replaced a couple with switching back and forth between perspectives if it felt better or made more sense narratively (which is ironic for an edit like this 😄 ). Also tidied up the split screens as well:

[Left=Original, Right=HD Remaster]

Specs:
Video: 1080p 5mbps, Audio: AAC 5.1 320kbps (Webisodes upmixed to 5.1), English CC subs

Feel free to PM me if you’re interested, but don’t reply on the thread for links. I no longer get emails for some reason on when there’s a reply.

How are you handling the time lines in your chronological edit? I did a sd edit of this myself years ago, took two tries (pc died 4 seasons in on one try and no back up) and I cut it so Jack dies on the island, watches the plane fly overhead and then the entire alternate time line plays out as his near-death experience with the end being the group reunited (with all the scenes of him dying on the island excised as they were used for his island death scene).

Ouch, that’s a shame.

It’s gonna be mainly the same as the original edit I’m basing it on, same episode names and so on, so the Flash-sideways will be in its own Epilogue set after the events on the Island.

What are you doing concerning burnt in titles, credits, etc.? I left them in as the edit was primarily for my entertainment and I just ''watch around them" as I like to phrase it. The crash and post crash stuff is so much better when the storylines of the losties, talies and others are all integrated and playing out at the same time. It just seems cheap, oh, yeah, you’ve been watching this show about these people for a while now but HEY! there’s a bunch of people from the tail that survived. Let’s spend an hour talking about them and catch you up to speed, m’kay?
I think for me it’s episodes 10 & 11 that we get the crash, each one of mine ran about 2 hours and there’s 50 of them.

Are you integrating webisodes and deleted scenes? There’s a wiki with a timeline that is generally helpful for a project like this, my stumbling block on pass two was there is a scene in a later episode where Widmore is evicted from the island by Ben and I didn’t catch that, it’s just a quick little thing that I missed and…yeah, after months of work I’m done with this one as it is.

Leaving those untouched, nothing I can do about them sadly. heh Was like that for me too, it’s quite hard for me to watch it in its intended order now, especially how it tended to repeat certain scenes etc to show a different side, was main influence for me doing this so I could have a Chronological edit that was in HD.
The crash is on episode 26 for this version, each episode runs about 40-50 mins (one 1977 episode over an hour).

The Webisodes are included in this too, whatever ones the original edit had. Good thing those are in 1080p as well but I’m doing a little more with those as they were mixed in Stereo while this edit is 5.1, so I’m doing a 5.1 upmix for the webisodes (nothing fancy, just isolating and separating the dialogue into a Center channel with some balancing). Also having to do a custom subtitle track for them too as my Season 4 Blu-ray set for some reason only has Foreign subs for those special features.

I was tempted to go through the deleted scenes and add those in, but it would have been quite jarring overall so I’m ignoring them.

Yeah, some of the early seasons the cut seasons are rather rough, the quality improves a lot as you go ahead each season.

As someone who’s thought of doing exactly this since I first got hold of Chronologically Lost - thanks for tackling this!

So basically this is the same as http://www.chronologicallylost.com/ but HD?

Pretty much, it follows the same structure, just rebuilt using a Blu-ray source this time. Few differences here and there like moving one of the brief time flashes and tidying up the audio mix. Others I couldn’t do like the Season 2 finale having bits gone as they were cut out from the two-part version (on Blu-ray and PAL DVD) and he used a Region 1 DVD source (which I don’t have. Would have upscaled those cut bits and included them if I had full rips of it) which had the episode in its single broadcast form. Maybe if I manage to get a full rip of the finale from that set in the future, I’ll do a version 2 of those episodes (Season 1 finale had a couple of shot differences between releases but not as much as Season 2. Can’t say anything for the rest yet)

Sure thing. I put together episode 60 (start of Season 3) the other day so it’s getting there.

Update: Finished episode 96, so the main storyline is complete, leaving the Epilogue (Flash-sideways from S6) only thing left now.

Yeah, luckily the foundation was already set, it certainly isn’t something I would have liked to sort myself, so it was mostly about tidying it up. Still unsure how I’ll have it uploaded yet, got it currently on my main Google drive as I did each episode and could just link that, or get a 1TB Mega account and upload it there. Also have to see what the interest for this will be like after its finished.

Also found another oddball episode (89) that was cropped on the right side (filled in the rest to show how much was gone) for some reason: http://www.framecompare.com/image-compare/screenshotcomparison/D777GNNX

Google Drive isn’t a bad choice IMO. Hal 9000 shares all his edits over Google Drive.

Update: Finished episode 101, so the edits finished now. Also went through the subs again fixing minor quirks, though that’ll be in a separate folder as I’d have to remux 101 MKVs. lol

So feel free to PM if you’re interested.

Doing some tests to see if I can do an x265 encode that’s roughly 1/3 the size, never done any x265 releases before so this’ll be new to me. There’s a slight quality loss from what I’m seeing but this’ll be more a space-friendly version while the current one is Blu-ray compliant. Also gives me a chance to mux in the updated subtitles with it.

Done a couple clips via Handbrake using H265 12-bit mode, not sure if being 12-bit has lower compatibility or more memory intensive to play but here’s how they look:

I think 12-bit h265 has compatibility issues with tons of players. Best to stick with 10-bit IMO, which is widely accepted and still more efficient than 8-bit h264.

Had a feeling it would. I did one episode yesterday to see what rendering times I’d be looking at. 5mbps seemed to be fine though it takes a hit on the grain and darker areas which wasn’t as bad as I expected, hopefully the difference between 12 and 10-bit isn’t that noticeable.

Maybe try experimenting a little with CRF encoding values instead of targeting a bitrate? Quality will be more consistent that way, but file sizes will vary some.

I can’t recommend a CRF value for h265 though, that’s out of my area of expertise. I’d suggest 18 for h264 with slower/slowest encoding settings, but I honestly have no idea how h265 behaves with encoding as I never really use it.

I’ve never had much luck when trying to use an encoding value, not wanting something either too small or too big, so I don’t mind targeting a bitrate. I’ll try 10-bit using same settings and see how it turns out. Also trying a slower encoder preset which from what I see will make it about 16-17 hours total for one of the 1 hour episodes, but doing a clip first to make sure.

That’s fair. I like using CRF values personally, as I don’t mind varying file sizes as long as quality is kept consistent, and the slower the encoding, the smaller the file size with CRF values, so I tend to use the slowest preset with a CRF of about 17 or 18.

I’ve compressed 10 episodes so far to x265, not going in order here, instead going from longest episodes to shortest. It’s taking roughly an episode per day with the preset I’m using so I’d say at least 3 months it’ll take to do all, but I’ll still update this every 10 episodes I do.

Wow, that’s a really long time. Not super familiar with h265 since I rarely use it, but I can batch encode a full series of similar length using h264 in under a week and it looks pretty close to perfect in the end. One episode per day seems absurdly slow to me…

I could try changing the preset to Medium if that’d split the time in half or so, just don’t want the quality affected too much. I’ll have to try that with the next episode

After thinking about it (I stopped it during the week to do some grinding in GTA:O), I’m gonna stick with Slow preset. I don’t want to rush the x265 release, just as long as there’s already a release available.
