Hello OTF!

I would like to present an outline of my rewrite of ROTJ. If it goes well, I might make this into a narrated and illustrated YT video. I appreciate all constructive feedback.

(Opening crawl begins)

Luke Skywalker has returned to
the swamp planet of Dagobah to conclude his Jedi training with Master Yoda.

Meanwhile Princess Leia races to Tatooine to rescue her lover Han Solo from the clutches of the gangster Jabba the Hutt.

Little do they know that the GALACTIC EMPIRE has begun construction on a weapon that will spell certain doom for the small band of rebels fighting for the freedom of the galaxy…

(Opening crawl ends)

The Super Star Destroyer Executor floats in orbit above the jungle world of Kashyyyk. It is being refitted to carry a large conical assembly. Slave I flies towards the Executor. In the hangar, Boba Fett meets Darth Vader for a lucrative assassination contract.

Cut to Jabba’s palace on Tatooine.

Disguised as bounty hunters, Princess Leia and Lando Calrissian infiltrate Jabba’s palace under the pretense of collecting the bounty on Chewbacca. They try to unfreeze Han but are cornered by Jabba’s thugs. After a tense standoff, they are sent to an arena to do battle with Jabba’s rancor. Lando uses a hidden lock pick to free himself and Leia and open the gate of Jabba’s torture chamber. Leia uses her latent Force abilities to communicate with the rancor. The beast turns on its masters and eats Jabba. Amidst mass panic, Leia, Lando, and Chewie bring frozen Han to the Millennium Falcon and flee the planet.

Meanwhile on Dagobah, Luke climbs a mountain while blindfolded. In a cave at the summit, he finds that Yoda is dying. Yoda confirms that Darth Vader, once known as Anakin Skywalker, is Luke’s father and fellow student of Kenobi’s alongside his lover Padme, Luke’s mother. With his dying breath Yoda passes Padme’s green lightsaber to Luke. Luke meets with R2 at the base of the mountain and the two board his X-Wing. While flying away from the planet, the ghost of Obi-Wan reveals to Luke that Padme wanted to turn Vader back. When this did not work, Obi-Wan Kenobi fought him; he then hid Luke and his anonymous sister from the Emperor. Kenobi tells Luke that he must face Vader again to defeat the Empire and become a Jedi Knight.

The Falcon emerges from hyperspace outside a nebula. Deep within, the ship docks with the flagship of the Rebel Alliance.

On the bridge of the flagship, Mon Mothma tells Leia and the other Alliance commanders that the Empire has begun to refit the Executor with a hyperspace jammer under the supervision of the Emperor himself. The device prevents any hyperspace jumps into or out of its active radius; it is protected by a shield generated by a bunker on the nearby planet Kashyyyk’s surface. Mon Mothma commissions a strike team to fly to the surface in a stolen Imperial shuttle and destroy the shield bunker. Then the Rebel fleet can destroy the Executor in orbit. As Leia leaves the bridge to unfreeze Han in the med bay, Mon Mothma calls the other Rebel vessels across the galaxy to rendezvous with her flagship. After he is unfrozen, Han does not trust Lando and the two men nearly exchange fists.

Boba Fett’s Slave I stows on the hull of an incoming Rebel cruiser. It detaches and then destroys the bridge of the Rebel flagship, killing Mon Mothma and many other Rebel commanders. Han Solo and Chewie board the Falcon and destroy Slave I, killing Boba Fett. Leia, the highest ranking Rebel commander alive, takes Mon Mothma’s place. Luke arrives shortly after. Leia tells Luke that she has realized she is his sister. Luke reveals to her that their father is Darth Vader and that he must defeat him personally. Luke and Lando accompany the strike team to Kashyyyk in a stolen Imperial shuttle.

Luke and his companions encounter a tribe of Wookiees and, after an initial conflict, gain their trust through Chewbacca and C-3P0. Surrendering to Imperial troops, Luke is brought before Vader, and he tries to convince his father to return from the dark side of the Force. The dark lord inspects Luke’s lightsaber and is momentarily caught off-guard by the familiar green blade of his long-dead wife. Vader takes Luke to the Executor to meet the Emperor, intent on turning him to the dark side.

On Kashyyyk, Lando’s team is captured by Imperial forces while trying to seize the bunker. On the Executor, the Emperor tempts Luke to give in to his anger, and Luke engages Vader in a lightsaber duel. Meanwhile, Han Solo leads the Rebel Fleet in the Falcon with Wedge Antilles as his co-pilot. They find that the Executor’s shield is still active and the Imperial fleet waiting for them. The Emperor reveals that the hyperspace jammer is operational and that the Rebel Fleet has fallen into a trap, simultaneously unable to defeat the Imperial fleet and unable to escape into hyperspace. On Kashyyyk, a counterattack by the Wookiee tribe allows the Rebels to infiltrate the shield generator.

Vader senses that Luke has a sister, and threatens to turn her to the dark side. Enraged, Luke attacks and severs Vader’s prosthetic hand. The Emperor entreats Luke to kill Vader and take his place, but Luke refuses, declaring himself a Jedi as his parents had been. Furious, the Emperor tortures Luke with Force lightning. Unwilling to let his son die, Vader throws the Emperor down a pit, but is mortally electrocuted in the process. At his last request, Luke removes the redeemed Anakin’s mask before he dies in Luke’s arms.

Han sets a course for the bridge of the Executor. As the Falcon sacrifices itself to sink the ship and Luke escapes on a shuttle with his father’s body, the Executor explodes.

On Kashyyyk, Leia reveals to Luke that she is pregnant with Han’s child. Luke cremates Anakin’s body on a pyre. As the defeat of the Empire is celebrated, Luke sees the spirits of Yoda, Obi-Wan, Padme, and Anakin watching over him.

LOL. I like this.

Overall, I like your plot. However, I don’t like keeping Leia as Luke’s sister; it’s a bad idea which should just be discarded. As for the Luke/Vader/Palpatine conflict, I’d personally go a grayer route. Luke goes with Vader to see Palpatine with the intention of slaying the emperor; any attempt to sway Vader from the dark side is a secondary objective. I also wouldn’t show Vader as a redeemed Anakin. IMO, Vader has committed, ordered, and been compliant with too many war crimes for a single decent act to absolve him of his guilt. The farthest I’d go is showing Vader as a haunted Force ghost, still bearing his wounds in life, who’ll have to earn redemption in the afterlife.

Any thoughts on the Padme retcon and Han’s death?

I don’t mind making Padme a Jedi, but her ghost’s presence at the end does feel a bit shoehorned in. I’m quite fine with Han’s death.

In an earlier draft of the story, I kept the DS2 in but placed it above Tatooine, the Jawas and Tusken Raiders stood in for the Ewoks, and the story ended with Luke gazing towards the setting suns.

Is there any way to modify this script to make a fan edit of the existing film possible?

Not really. There are entire scenes in here that do not appear in the film ROTJ, and vice versa. Good luck recutting the film to put Lando on Kashyyyk, or to show Luke climbing that mountain. I was thinking of using static backgrounds and character cut-outs with some sound effects and music interspersed throughout to accompany a detailed narration, similar to YouTube videos released by people like BelatedMedia and BanditIncorporated (though I had to stop watching the latter after he exposed his backwards views on women in a response video to TLJ).

Luke reveals to her that their father is Darth Vader and that he must defeat him personally.

Later…

Surrendering to Imperial troops, Luke is brought before Vader, and he tries to convince his father to return from the dark side of the Force.

Okay, what? Luke starts off wanting to defeat Vader, yet now he wants to redeem him?

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

Looks to me like a typo. Can easily be fixed by replacing defeat Vader with defeating the Emperor.

And yet Luke still sensed the good in him.
