4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 278

Seeing the new TROS teaser, I’m extremely disappointed to see the same old blu-ray masters being shown. I’d really hoped by now they’d be showing shots from new masters. I can already imagine the horror of discovering that the new 4K versions are just upscales of the 2011 blu-rays.

Even if there is a new 4K master, it’s unlikely they would have used it for something like a teaser this far out.

This “special look” wasn’t made to go out to theaters anyway, and probably can’t be streamed on youtube in anything higher than 1080 (although please correct me if I’m wrong), so the OT footage coming from a higher res source wouldn’t have made any noticeable difference, hence why they went with the off-the-shelf blu-rays.

It’s worth noting that the first teaser trailer for RotS back in late ‘04 used the then only recently finished Lowry master for its two or three ANH shots and in fact used the alternate camera angle (the close-up of Alec Guinness) for Obi-Wan’s “for over a thousand generations” line. In the actual movie we don’t cut to his close-up until the “before the dark times” part IIRC. I don’t know if that alternate angle was also the OCN or if they used another source, but presumably LFL had it restored just for that teaser.

Similarly, the first trailer for Crystal Skull used footage from the Indy trilogy. I don’t know if it was from the ‘03 Lowry masters or the 2008 remasters (the ones that were broadcast on WoWoW and which were used, with a different color grade, for the eventual blu-rays of Temple and Crusade).

It would be cool if they did something similar for the final trailer in October. The teaser trailer from April went out to theaters as an actual 4k file, so if they were going to use OT footage I feel like they’d want it to look as good as possible.

Yeah I was disappointed to see that also.

Still waiting for details on this latest batch of Blu-rays Disney is releasing in September. I am hopeful that they will be struck from the new master and not just repackaged 2011 versions.

If that fails we just have to wait until November for Disney+, then at least it should be the new masters albeit special editions.

Disney has said the service will have 4k HDR content “where applicable,” although I don’t think they’ve said anything yet about just when exactly I-VI will be available to stream, at all, at any resolution.

It would be a little weird if the new master ended up making its first appearance in the form of a stream. For one thing, Disney would be undercutting their own sales of a physical UHD release if they were to do that.

Who the heck has the bandwith for 4K streams? I live out in the sticks and 1080 is a crapshoot on any given day. Disney barely seems to care about their back catalog on physical media beyond their animated classics and Marvel flicks these days.

I’ve streamed 4K HDR from Amazon, VUDU, and Movies Anywhere, and it looks great. Definitely better than a 1080p blu-ray and almost as good as a 4K UHD disc. But I’ve yet to stream anything from anyone that sounds as great as a disc.

Still, if you can stream 4K HDR, just do it! I remember the old days of trying to rotate the antenna on the roof to make the picture stop rolling, so I think all this streaming is great!

That wasn’t the antenna’s fault, it was a bad vertical control knob. 😛

When I was a kid, I would get up early to watch Hanna Barbera’s World Of Super Adventure on the kitchen tv, which somehow picked up the signal from a distant New York station so long as I held onto the rabbit ears with one hand.

Yet I still don’t have The Black Cauldron on Blu-Ray 😦

10,000 Leagues did just come out as a Club Exclusive, though. So that’s something.

I fear the only way we’ll ever get TBC is if they do a remake.

It was so long ago, Star Wars wasn’t even a trilogy yet.

I’ve got 70 Mbps down and have no problem with Netflix or Amazon’s 4K streams, though I’m hard wired to my router, not over WiFi.

I have an Amazon 4K Fire Stick (WiFi only) that I got for $24 and it looks pretty good. The sound isn’t so great though, especially on the Hulu app.

When I stream 4K on my blu ray player (Sony UBP-X700) it looks and sounds a little better. Nothing beats putting a 4K UHD disc in it though.

I guess what I’m saying is there’s always a step up, so just take it however you can get it. We are seriously spoiled by the quality and convenience of home theaters now.

All that is missing is my beloved Original Trilogy, properly restored in 4K with HDR.

Seeing that Jar Jar / Boss Nass screenshot, I’m afraid of seeing a 4k version of TPM. Some CGI shots didn’t aged well.

Same for all of the Special Edition CGI

I think what’s becoming obvious is thst LF has a new transfer ready, and caps from it are leaking in media published by LF as that must be what’s available locally now for their editors. Excited to eventually see what the finished video product(s) entail(s)!

So it will just be a new transfer of the Special Edition? What will those effects look like next to the film in 4K HDR?

Would be funny if they reverted to 1997 Weird Science Jabba.
