Just out of curiosity, when do you believe this project will be finished?

I had originally planned to have it out by Christmastime; however, I'm worried that with the way things are going, that might not happen. Now, I don't want to commit myself to anything else because I don't want folks to be disappointed if I don't meet the deadline.

Ah very exciting. I was wondering if, when you have time, you could post a video clip of some altering you have done WITH your new anakin ADR? I just feel that the more that I get use to your voice as anakin, the less shock I will have when watching Hayden, but hearing someone else. Good luck on your work!

I would LOVE to do that so that you guys could comment on it/critique it and so that I could show the work off a bit before the final film is done. However, I don't have access to sufficient filespace and I don't want to pay to get any. As I said before, if anyone else has filespace that wouldn’t mind sharing it for a couple days, I’d be more than happy to post some clips.

Forum member None has PM’d me regarding free file space so that I could put up some links to video previews. He gave me several free hosting sites, and said that if it didn’t work out for some reason, he could host them himself. Very kind!

So now it appears that the series of Internet Shroud of the Dark Side video previews will be beginning in a couple of days. If you want to be surprised, don’t look I’ll try yousendit.com first, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll try a couple of others. I have a very slow connection at home, so what I’ll do is put the video clips on a USB drive, bring them to my library (with DSL), and upload them there. I might post links to video clips, images, notes, audio clips, or any number of other things in the future. Here are some things I could post soon:

1. Audio clip of General Grievous for Episode III- test
2. Very early test footage of Anakin/Padme reunite with C-3PO- my first attempt at mixing my lines into the film, with music, sound, etc.
3. Geonosis- preview of landing, droids bickering, dark tunnel, and beginning of Droid Factory sequence- color corrected
4. Opening scene of film
5. Nightmare sequence (just music- no sound effects or dialogue yet)
6. My music for the end of Episode I
7. Lots of other early test stuff- just have to dig for it

TM:

I will eagerly check out whatever you post. But a word of caution is warrented because this is a lo-o-o-ng process. Because the biggest question any of us have is "What will the new Anakin sound like?" you better not post any of that until you nail it. There are going to be ruthless nay-sayers no matter what you post. If the posted sample mix is unfinished, it takes an experienced ear and a kind heart to listen to it and be supportive. Save yourself the headache of posting anything too soon.

I love the upside of dubbing Anakin - new lines, better delivery, darker presence; but I fear the possible downside too: what if it's jarring? What if the mix feels unnatural? I leave it to your capable hands to fend off the troubles, of course. But if you post something that isn't finished and seems to prompt more worry, I fear this thread could attract trolls and other unnecessary flack.

I have access to equipment for recording lines. I've done acting and can help if you need it. I would have volunteered sooner, but I've been pretty busy. Let me know-- this offer is real.

It's too bad the crawl can't be re-done one more time because it would be the perfect place to establish that "Queen Amidala has given up her throne to work for the good of the galactic Senate" -- this bit in the opening crawl would give more oomph to the opening scenes. The way this plays out in AotC feels like a retired politician taking a lame-duck token position as a Senator rather than a powerful person taking on a new and difficult mission.

But that droid factory stuff looks too cool for school!!! So much more realistic and so much more atmosphere. With the little character weight you're adding to their mission here, this sequence is going to feel and look a hell of a lot better.

Trooperman:

"Shroud of the Dark Side" it is, then. I rather like your suggestion of giving Episode 1 no subtitle; in this case it would actually make sense to title the first film of the series "Star Wars," as opposed to the fourth. More input on this from others would be welcome.

And I really do wish you could have the crawl redone just once more. It is one of most effective ways of altering fan edits, and establishing Padme's Queen/Senator relationship would go a long way. Your "deadline" isn't until Christmas, so surely something could be worked out.

I've been meaning to ask you about releasing a trailer for SotDS, and what you've suggested is along those lines, but more of rough behind-the-scenes stuff if you will. As MTHaslett said, anything not up to par will be ripe for ridicule. My suggestion would be to wait until you have enough finished product and put together an offical looking trailer if it wouldn't be too much trouble. THAT would be awesome.

Trooperman: I haven't had internet access for a while. So, I haven't been able to post in a while. Anyways, I like the way this edit is going. Also, I would try my hand at dubbing the characters. However, I lack a microphone. I also, like what you did with the atmosphere in the driod factory. Good luck getting everything together by Christmas.

I see the wisdom in your advice to be careful about what I post links to, because it could be good material for ridicule. How about this- I’ll post part of the color-corrected droid factory scene without any dubbed voices. If people are honestly interested in hearing a sample of the dubbed voice, then they can PM me and I’ll give them links to a couple other little clips.

Other than that, the public will wait until I release a trailer (which I will definitely create in the future, CC).

Twister111- nice to have you back

MTHaslett- are you serious about your offer to dub characters for my edits? This could open up so many opportunities as to what I could do. Rebel1138 has already signed up to do Lama-Su (after reading the audition thread), but if that doesn’t work out or he doesn’t have time, then I would love to have you as the new Lama-Su. Actually, if you really wanted to do it, you wouldn’t have to wait until auditions or over- I can PM you with my email address so that you could send some audio samples. As I’ve said, ChainsawAsh was originally signed to do it, but can’t because of video/audio card problems with his PC.

Opening crawl- I'm getting worried about it at this point. Jeten San Hett has not responded to my latest email requesting screenshots of the crawl. I hope not, but I'm beginning to be very worried that I'm stuck without any kind of new crawl for my edit. And I doubt that anyone else would do the crawl for me- I merely asked for advice regarding the crawl in the Preservation section and got very little feedback on that, let alone an offer to do the crawl. I'll try to figure that out.

I can do the crawl for you. I just need to know how you want it done, what you want it to say...blah, blah, blah. I should be able to get it done fairly quickly since I have already created a template for the crawl and all I would need to do is plug-in what you want it to say.

PM me with the details and we can get you hooked up.

Rebel1138- that's fantastic! I will PM you when I get the chance to get the information together for you. I actually already created an .AI file containing the crawl- but if you don't like it or you find formatting errors, then by all means do it your way. I'm very excited about this- thanks so much sir!

I will PM with detailed instructions in the near future!

MTHaslett- If nobody else signs up for auditions by tomorrow, I believe I'd like to take you up on your offer to do Lama-Su (if you don't mind). Unfortunately, Reb1138 is also having audio recording trouble. Are you still interested in this? Do you have a kind of evil sounding voice?

Just out of curiosity, Rebel1138, would your crawl be more along the line's of MagnoliaFan's or ADigitalMan's? While MF's gets the job done, you can tell it's fan made. ADM's, on the other hand, looks as if it was the genuine article.
Author
Time
I thought the same thing about MF's, but I don't know what adigitalman's looked like. I have done extensive tests on my crawl template and I feel that my rendition looks like the real deal.

Once I finish it perhaps Trooperman will post a few screenshots to show everyone.
Author
Time
I'm glad you also noticed MF's crawls being a bit off. Perhaps he could use you or anyone else with the capability to remake his crawls if he so desired.

I couldnt sleep tonight and so I had some extra time on my hands. I went ahead and made some mock-ups of Trooperman's crawl for y'all to look over. I honestly haven't read this whole thread and there may be quite a bit that Trooperman has changed since he posted his example crawl, but it was what I used to get the wording.

Let me know what you think. I think I remember reading that there wasn't going to be an episode number which would be easily fixed, but wasn't there something about changing the pan in the beginning? I thought Trooperman was going to change it so the camera panned down instead of up, then again my memory may be playing tricks on me. In case I do remember correctly, I turned the star background upside-down so that it would mesh with the rest of the upside-down video. I can change that too if it is wrong.

Here are the example (re-edited) shots:

Hope they meet with approval.

Rebel11_38:
Perhaps you could PM me with a template/settings whatever to do the crawl exactly like you. I have created some music videos of me and my friends from our final school year, and at the beginning of one of them I wanted to use a Star Wars crawl. I got very close to a good one before my system went shitty and I eventually ditched the idea. Yours looks 100% genuine! Perhaps in a week or two if I was to give you the text you could make one for me? I would be very greatful!

In fact, if you wouldn't mind, PM me and we can talk about it over PMs.

Rebel11_38- these meet with my HUGE approval. Clearly you know exactly what you are doing! Thank you again for doing this for me. The only changes I have are mostly departures from the style of the original crawls.

1. You were correct in flipping the starfield- I’d like it to pan down instead of up.
2. The title and episode number is fine- I was only talking about removing them for Episode I, which is a long time from now
3. I was wondering if you could change the coloring of the crawl to match the more yellowish color of the original trilogy crawls (for more consistency). As an aside, I learned that even the official PAL discs actually contain a yellow version of the crawl.
4. Justification- I think I’m one of the only people that cares about this (even the official crawls don’t do this), but when the text is justified, some lines only have three or four words on them and are very “spacey”. Right above them, however, is a line packed with six or seven little words. What I did when I did a prototype for the crawl was I nudged a word or two off of the packed line so that the badly justified line would have more words and things would look more evenly spaced. Apparently, there’s a way to do this automatically in Adobe Illustrator, but I just did it manually with the space bar. So for example (if we were using this crawl), I would use the space bar to nudge “of” to the second line.
5. The new crawl is as follows:

Episode II
SHROUD OF THE DARK SIDE

Ten years after Palpatine assumed power of the Galactic Senate, unrest once again pervades the galaxy. Several thousand systems intend to secede from the Republic.

These separatist traitors, led by the mysterious Count Dooku, have made it especially difficult for the limited number of Jedi Knights to maintain peace and order in the galaxy.

Queen Amidala, now serving as Senator of Naboo, is en route to Coruscant to vote on the critical issue of creating an ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC to support the overwhelmed Jedi….

6. I was also wondering, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble, if you could send me the template, settings, etc. and also how you would do this in Blender or 3dStudioMax, Illustrator, or whatever you’re using, because I have the tools and the fonts necessary to do these myself, but I don’t know how. Maybe in the future I could create my own crawls!

What you’ve done so far looks fantastic and very much the real thing! I will PM you after it is completed so we can figure out file formats, and how I can receive the crawl (split .rar through email, a link to free filespace, etc.)

Thanks so much! (and by the way, I’ll need your full name because you’ve just put yourself in the end credits)

I edited the pictures above to reflect your requests.

I changed the color of the test shots, let me know if you want the color tweaked a little more in one way or another.

Do you need to a shot of the STAR WARS receding into the background too? I kind of figure that you would since you want a specific color and the fact that the stars are going to be flipped. If you need this as well let me know.

I tried to make the justification a bit more to your liking, but with the wording it is hard to avoid the spacey-ness. I hope it is okay.

It's not necessary to include me in the credits. Just helping out.

Thank you very much! The updated test shots look great! Only a couple other little things:

1. Could you add the word "star" in front of "systems" in the 1st paragraph?
2. Could you add the word "the" in front of "senator" in the last paragraph?

These little changes may help the spacing a great deal. Basically, the word "star" should allow you to bump "to" down to the next line and then the 1st paragraph will look great. 2nd paragraph is great as is, 3rd paragraph- only line that looks weird is "critical issue of creating". I'm pretty sure that the extra word will help you change that.

New color looks perfect! And if you wouldn't mind, a shot of "Star Wars" receding into the background would be of great help, although I could try and do it myself if you weren't able to.

And I insist- your name goes in the credits, because if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have a film title, crawl, pan down, nothing- you've created the whole opening to the film. Thanks again!

Here is the refined spacing of the final paragraph:

It will take a bit longer on the Star Wars logo as I am currently working on a section right now that I am not quite happy with. I will post a pic of it when I am done. I hope to finish that part by next week.

The spacing looks really good. That's one of the best fanmade crawls I've seen

A few quick points on the scroll...

First, looking real good at the moment, even though I can barely see any stars!

The initial problem with the spacing of the last line of the first paragraph shouldn't have been an issue as it shouldn't actually even be justified. I can't tell if this has been fixed in the latest version since it is far in the distance in the screenshot.

My only big problem with this crawl is the last line, I hate single word lines (or lines containing two short words)! It really disrupts the balance in paragraphs and I used to go to great lengths on the magazine I work on to avoid it at all costs (now most of my fixes are automated so I rarely have to do anything!). Now, I know this is actually a problem with the official crawl (twice actually in Ep II), but still something I personally would like fixed.

Also not really a fan of having 'en route' spread over two lines.

My suggested fix is to drop a line and make it more compact. Both ROTS and ROTJ had a crawl with one less line and ANH had an additional line so it wont be 'unofficial' to add or bump a line.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!
