I enjoy reading about latin and north american political history during the 60s, 70s and today's, about Japan's Meiji Era (the whole 1800s), about WW2 and its crimes (holocaust, hiroshima & nagasaki)... Only by knowing the truth about our past, you are able to discuss about our future.

I'm not a huge history nut, but I'm a firm believer in what ric is saying about the past and the future; if we neglect history, we will end up repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

You have to learn lessons from history. If not, you truly are doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. I agree wholeheartedly.

I'm 23, will be 24 in July.

Someone said earlier that TVs have just become babysitters. I agree with this point. So are the libraries (like where I work) and the malls and any of the other places kids go after school instead of going home.

I am against automated censorship like what this DVD player is marketted to do.
I am all for parental censorship though. The problem is, I see parents being less and less involved with their kids. ou cannot have parental censorship without the parents.

Sometimes it isn't their fault. If both parents must work to get by, then that is what needs to happen, but the family suffers as a whole.

I agree that this DVD player could be used for automated babysitting/censorship, but I also see it as a tool for people who want to limit niot only the content their children watch, but what they watch as well. Ultimately it comes down to what I call the Cameron Principle (as best exemplified by the themes running through T2): technology itself is benign, but what we do with it determines whether it winds up being good or evil. Consider the following non-censorship example: I have a game console, which is designed for recreation. If I use that console all day and neglect my family and my job, is that the machine's fault? NO! I should have the initiative to get off my lazy butt and do something. The same is true of this player.

Another problem with that situation is that most people nowadays will not take responsibility for their own actions. Many people (possibly at the advice of a lawyer)out there would (continuing with your own example) sue the console manufacturer and/or game manufacturer for creating such an addicting product.
