Info & Help Wanted: Any interest in a 'The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' Preservation Project - Original Featurette Versions + Fullscreen Open Matte Version

Is anyone interested in preserving the original featurette versions of “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” (“Honey Tree”, “Blustery Day”, and “Tigger Too”)?

The original half-hour shorts were released on VHS several times in the 1990s and were last put out in 2000. Since then, the only version to currently exist on home media is the 1977 compilation film version (though “The Blustery Day” was included as a bonus feature on the 2006 DVD of “Pooh’s Grand Adventure”; unfortunate for those living outside of the USA). I feel like these versions definitely deserve to be released and restored on DVD (and at least included alongside “The Many Adventures”).

Interestingly, I did hear that “Blustery Day” and “Tigger Too” were recently restored and aired on Disney Junior last year. (Did anybody manage to record those airings by the way?) Also, I found these remastered screenshots of the original title card scenes, as shown on the “A Tigger Tale” bonus feature from the “Tigger Movie” Blu-Ray:

In terms of a fan-made restoration of the short versions, the only elements to really worry about would be two things:

  1. The original opening and closing credits
  2. Bruce Reitherman’s original dialogue as Christopher Robin in “The Honey Tree” (for “The Many Adventures”, he was re-dubbed by Jon Walmsley, who originally voiced the character in the “Blustery Day” segment and later in the epilogue of the movie. For some reason, Timothy Turner’s dialogue as the character in the “Tigger Too” segment is left intact.)

Another concerning issue is the widescreen cropping of the compilation film version, when it was released to Blu-Ray in 2013. This is actually something that’s been recently occurring to almost all of the 1960s-70s Disney movies (ex. “Jungle Book”, “Robin Hood”).

Oddly, I did find a few rare open matte clips of the 2013 Blu-Ray master, as seen here, but otherwise, there’s really not much else I can say, except that the cropping really bites.

Some years ago I released laserdisc rips of the two shorts that weren’t on DVD, but they were done on shoddy equipment.

Yes, I recently downloaded that torrent a few months. Both of those shorts (“Honey Tree” and “Tigger Too”) are the original 1986 home video transfers (later re-used for the 1990 Mini Classics VHS releases), with the Buena Vista opening logos omitted; whereas the “Blustery Day” transfer on the “Pooh’s Grand Adventure” DVD is 1994-2000 Storybook Classics version, which restored the original Buena Vista opening. (I also recently got the 1990s Storybook Classics transfer of “The Honey Tree” from a YouTube user.)

One thing to note about “Tigger Too” by the why (HEADACHE ALERT): I don’t know why, but the 1986 video transfer is carried over from a 1970s TV edit, with a condensed version of the opening credits and theme, along with a fade-to-black transition before the scene with Rabbit getting lost in the forest.

A special note about the opening credits (before the theme and narration): the 1986 release uses a slightly shortened and sped-up version, along with two odd (and somewhat unnecessary) fade-to-blacks and a voice-over announcing the title. The 1990 Mini-Classics VHS of course uses the same previous transfer, but interestingly, with the complete unedited version of the opening credits, carried over from a much older 1980s transfer as used for international VHS releases (i.e. Spain, Germany, and Italy).

Here are the two VHS openings for comparison:
*1986
*1990

I think Jerryshadoe is working on it alongside his “New Adventures” preservation.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Ah, OK. Well anyways, I was going to mention this, but I found some Japanese laserdisc releases of “Honey Tree” and “Tigger Too” below:

These are the only other digital releases of those two shorts, aside from the 1987 “Double Feature” laserdisc here in the USA.

I don’t which transfers were used for those releases, but I am sure that “Tigger Too” uses an unedited copy.

Well, those two JP LD’s have digital audio, but not digital video, just analog.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but what does this mean, exactly? For “Honey Tree” and “Blustery Day”, is the only difference between Storybook and Mini classics the Buena Vista opening logos? And then of course on “Tigger Too” it has that change as well as the other speed and fade edits you mentioned?

“Honey Tree” has a few small trims on most pre-Storybook Classics video releases (save for the US Spanish version), which I’m guessing were sourced from a television print. Most noticeable when Rabbit reacts to Pooh noticing honey in Samuel J. Gopher’s lunchbox. In the complete version, you can briefly see him leaning into the interaction before he reacts in horror at what’s about to happen; however, in the trimmed releases, he’s already in his horrified expression when it cuts to him.

Ah, so would presumably this be fixed if one attached the Mini Classics opening/ closing to the segment from the DVD of the movie version?
