Digital Bits is very reliable.

Thanks.

I don’t plan on buying it if it’s not the unaltered version. If somehow the restoration was superb, I could possibly be convinced to buy the special editions again, but definitely not if Vader still has a pink lightsaber.

I’m most often excessively optimistic, but my expectations are low regarding this subject. No one in charge seems to care about it enough.

I don’t know, seeing CGI Jabba and Jedi rocks in 4K doesn’t sound pleasant. I really don’t want to see bad colors in HDR.

I’ll definitely get Rogue One and The Force Awakens.

That Tweet was part of an argument where a guy wanted TCM to list the film as the 1997 version instead of the 1977 version. Technically it’s not the 1997 version either.

It’s also worth re-emphasizing that TCM was using the exact same tv broadcast master as their sibling networks TNT and TBS (they altered it further for their own purposes with commercial breaks and whatnot, but otherwise it’s the 2011 master cropped to 16:9 except for the opening and closing shots/credits, just like they show it).

Let’s be honest, though. They were never going to debut a restoration of the unaltered ‘77 Star Wars in the form of a tv broadcast anyone could just dvr.

But it’s still a peek behind the curtain, despite it being so very minor.

… on a side note, right after Star Wars they showed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The print they used seemed to be unique to TCM. It wasn’t blue like the original blu-ray. And it wasn’t bland/dark like the later Director’s Cut blu-ray. It was quite nicely color balanced (leaning more to a warm earthy amber color) … they must’ve had that archived from way back somewhere. But at least CNN used some original Star Wars clips for their broadcast, which was super cool.

I was also noticing this as I watched the first few minutes the other night. I happened to find a screenshot comparison and there was in fact another hdtv broadcast that predates the 2009 blu-ray, with a red push and warm earthy colors, so that must’ve been what they were showing.

Yes, and for many years Cinemax HD played the red push Star Trek II as well… Showtime features the newer blu-rays of all the Trek films. TCM is a lot like HDNet Movies (Channel) because their vault is full of old HD transfers. You never know what you’re gonna get. MGM HD same way.

I personally don’t foresee the original versions ever getting shown on TV again even if they do get restored. Even a restored OUT is likely gonna be relegated to the back seat of a restored SE Trilogy which being the canon versions now are gonna be the versions shown on TV and available on digital etc. It’s just like how the Jaws BD has an option for the film’s original mono yet they only use the surround on TV broadcasts.

I predict this. Back seat might be a bit generous though.

Digital Bits is not very reliable at all.

Fixed that

How so? I’ve never known them to be anything but reliable, and they’re very good at clearly calling out rumors as such.

Blu-ray.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and several other retailers are listing new Blu-ray releases of all existing Star Wars movies (packaged individually, and not in 4K) for September 22, with a list price of $34.99 each. The runtime on the listing for ANH suggests that it’s the SE, but I suppose a GOUT bonus disc situation is possible. With a list price that high, I can’t imagine these are just repackaged 2011 discs without any additional content, but with the saga set all but confirmed for next year, I don’t know what else this could be.

EDIT: Actually, looking at the individual listings, I’m thinking these are probably just the 2011 discs with digital copies included, and probably new matching packaging. I’d love to be wrong though.

That sounds very expensive, but I wonder if it’s some other gimmick version. Unless they’re re-selling the steelbooks or something. Prediction: re-branded I-VIII to make them look like one big series. Like all those Disney/Marvel DVD sleeves that are silver and gold now.

yikes that is pricey. probably just includes digital copy.

I would bet that anything to include a ‘GOUT’ type disc, would come out as a followup to a new master. so that us crazy ones have to buy twice.

It makes no sense to me why Disney would re-issue the 2011 discs with a digital copy next month, when the apparent plan is to put out a 4K box set in the first half of next year. This makes me very concerned that the 4K box, if they include standard blu-rays, will only be the 2011 ones. I was hoping Disney would not follow the Lucasfilm route of releasing multiple editions, but instead put out an Ultimate Box set to end all box sets so to speak. Pardon me for venting, but all I can say is, I’m so glad I’ve got Harmy’s DEs and 4K77/83!!!

In any event, hopefully we’ll get some clarification at D23.

Probably expensive because that’s just the MSRP. Wouldn’t get my hopes up. Either way we’ll find out within a couple months, but they’re almost definitely the same stuff we already have, just being pushed out again ahead of the new movie (whereas a 4K release wouldn’t need a new movie out to sell well, so it’ll wait until next year).

If this really is just regular 1080p blu-ray again and there’s no day-and-date UHD planned, I suppose it’s possible they might at the very least finally retire the 2004 master and use the newer 4k master for this release.

I suppose it’s also possible they could include the original versions for that price point, but that could simply be the addition of a digital copy this time around or some fancy packaging (or both).

They could also include the OUT as a digital copy, like they did with The Last Jedi’s score only bonus. Who knows.
