Yeah, that auction was on my radar. (Several props from the film are being auctioned off as well.) Hard to tell from from the pics if it’s actually an alternate take. I’m hopeful the owner of theoverlookhotel.com is going to bid on that. I woulnd’t mind one of those hotel keys myself. 😉

just stumbled upon this:

“Long cut of the original film The Shining containing the scene in which Wendy, played by Shelley Alexis Duvall, carries Danny, played by little Danny Lloyd. These cuts, given by Kubrick to D’Alessandro, are particularly rare because the director notoriously burned all the leftovers at the conclusion of the editing.”

hefty price, though 😦

Hmmm interesting. This is’nt the hospital part at the end is it?

What other version is there? Certainly a tease to downplay the original ending perhaps…

Oh yeah they are making the sequal to the shining also… Wether we will get a sequel based on King’s version or Kubricks version?

Expect a few nods I guess. I imagine the first shot in the sequal will be the last shot reversed. Pan out from the picture of Torrence.

There is the shorter European cut and the longer American cut most of us are familiar with. The American cut saw a video release in Europe only in the past few years. This caused confusion several years ago when the Eastman House announced a screening of the “longer version” and people jumped to the conclusion it had the hospital scene.

Someone badly misinterpreted the Italian text from the auction site and it’s spread like wildfire on the interwebs. It’s not a lost scene/version of the film. It’s more like stuff saved from the cutting room floor by Stanley’s personal assistant. And it’s just the one scene, AFAIK. I’ve compared it to the finished film, and it doesn’t seem like an alternate take either.
If anybody does have the hospital scene, do please speak up though. : )

It’s King’s book Doctor Sleep that’s being made, and it’s doubtful it’s going to be an actual sequel to the movie. A prequel to Kubrick’s film titled Overlook Hotel has been in development for a few years now, but there hasn’t been any news lately.
There is a major homage to The Shining in a movie hitting theaters very soon, but I won’t spoil it for anyone. 😉

Ah so it is some outs and trimms. It does not sound hugely exciting from the description but it is none the less a very hard to come by deleted scene.

Halorann also was rumoured to have a gorier version of his death also if I recall. It does seem the take was a soft take rather than shall we say a “horror take” sir, if you catch my meaning…(said in voice of brittish butler)

I can’t remember but It feels like a cut there. After somone said it and I read it and checked it his death does feel like a small shot was cut though it is probably what 2 seconds or 1 second. It’s a rumour but i can sort of see it or feel it.

Anyway this link here.

The scrap book scene sctually sounds better than the ending hospital scene.

That link you posted also refers to Danny having one of his “Episodes” in the bath.

FOUND THE LINK FOR HALORAN RUMOUR.

I think what this article infers is that there was a 154 minute work print. As it claims 8 minutes were deleted from US longer version. And then a further 2 minutes after initial release. that is how I am interpreting it. And going by the list of scenes we have I think that it sounds about right around the 10 minute mark.

also from the 1st original cut.

Early releases featured end credits in the same blue as in the opening titles, instead of the white credits seen today.

The opening Warner Bros. logo was originally a red background with a black television-shaped box in the center, with three white lines meant to represent a “W.” For later releases, this was replaced with the traditional Warner Bros. shield. (Saul Bass)

I was just getting over how long I’ve waited for this print-scan to happen until I saw this recent Oreo cookie TV commercial:

I’m so excited for this release! The Shining is one of the few (very few) horror movies I like, and will actually watch. I saw that a 4K release is coming out in October and that should be awesome, but the preserved 35mm version should be a sight to see. Thanks for all the hard work!

I came across a open matte version of the shorter International cut in 1080p that has come out as a web dl version. The cropping is close to the old 4X3 dvd print aspect ratio but has the same pink cars and tennis ball problem.

Color correction work is still ongoing. It’s a long process as you can probably guess. The end result will be worth it though.

On a related note, I wish I could see this in person!

I was wondering if you knew about the snow in the maze at the end. Did it have a blue tint over it or is it white as the 4K reflects? If you have any idea, it would help a bunch with a project I am currently working on. Thank you in advanced.

It’s on Blutopia, if you can bet in there…and possibly Usenet.

I was able to get it. Just another question: Do you know if there’s a rip of the audio from the international blu-ray? This one has AC3, and I’d like to sync it with the lossless LPCM. If not, no biggie; this’ll do.

Thanks!

Honestly I’d much prefer that it be sent out with the original mono soundtrack. It might not be lossless, but it’s closer to what Kubrick intended than the 5.1 mix from the Blu Ray
