Here is a portion of my Phantom Menace edit:

There are countless specific changes but I can run through the major stuff:

  • Removed Jar-Jar
  • Anakin is less enthusiastic; he’s a slave.
  • Character interactions have been edited so that it becomes clear to the viewer that Qui-Gon is Anakin’s father without outright saying it.
  • Anakin no longer comes up with the entire plan to get the money, he just brings up the race and prize money.

What do you think?

Impressive

Here’s the first Maul fight but more ‘OT’ styled:

I cut pretty much every line Anakin has, I reduced shots that were entirely CG, I omitted some ADR lines, I tried to create a better flow between actors. I think I’m going to create a new thread for my ‘Phantom Menace 70s edition’ or something that would include ideas like my old R2 introduction clip.

Also, I’m thinking about omitting Anakin’s name until Qui-Gon introduces him to Obi-Wan. Thoughts? Delay that ‘dramatic irony’ a little.

100% improvement with this fight scene ,well done

What do you think about moving the Jamillia-scene and maybe the Leaving-Coruscant-scene with Padme and her handmaiden to the beginning of AOTC to point out the politics and the thread of an assassination attempt on Padme, if she’ll return to the senate.

This could add some tension to the Landingplattform-scene (Have these scenes actual names?) itself.

Nice! Now go full 1920s with 4:3 aspect ratio and low fidelity mono sound 😃

Interesting, I’ll have to try that out.

Hilarious to see mention of 4:3 aspect ratio, I’ve been thinking about taking on my own prequel edit and have been considering going for “academy ratio” as sort of a callback to that older style closer to silent era. Similar to how The Grand Budapest Hotel used it to set a period.

Cropping also has practical reasons opening up extra cutting room and if you wanted you could even pull a few maneuvers like George Lucas and find all kinds of room blending and splitting shots to gain that much control over the pace and focus of the scene.

That shot with Amidala is just gorgeous. I didn’t think I’d be talking about how gorgeous TPM is, but it looks like one of those 50s epics.

A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. Sorry, it must have been a while since I’ve watched this scene…other than removing Anakin’s “Master?”, what’s different?

The removal of the line “My master” and removed a shot of Zam’s face, That’s it.

I did play around with Death stick guy’s voice to sound more “human” but didn’t work out.

Wow it’s great, i like that type of colors in the movie it gives more like epic to me, kindly remembered the movie the ten commandments,i did kinda like that before but in photos here’s my example (sorry for making the skin looks so reddish, suck at coloring)

I love the color in that Anakin photo, the darkness plus the red hair light. Do you think you could apply this color to that whole scene? Maybe the motivation could be that Palpatine’s lightning blows out the lights.

yeah i intentionally did that to reference the loss of white glow of vader and luke’s lightsabers in dvd special edition of rotj and the part of obi wan’s lightsaber in the phantom menace

A bit off topic, but in regards to this post, I’d love to see what you could do with Indy 4. I think you could really bring life to that glowy yet muted film.

Here’s an idea of a change that I’m very proud of:

https://streamable.com/j6w7t

Anakin jumping through Padme’s window just makes sense from a character/narrative stand point. “That was some short cut” is now a funny quip from Obi-Wan instead of him being pissed.

This also sets up Obi-Wan’s “I hate it when he does that” line perfectly, as in the original version it’s kind of confusing.

It’s definitely on the right track, maybe moves a little too fast but only so much room where the figure is obscured, maybe don’t repeat the ewan reaction shot and save it for the second time would seem more fluid?

I never thought about how much more in character it is for Anakin to be the one jumping out the window.
