There has been occasional discussion on the subject here and elsewhere. The best source would be the Japanese TOS season box sets, as they are the only releases that have digital audio. The stumbling block is they are usually expensive as heck. The domestic versions are analog only, and AFAIK don’t even have CX noise reduction. If any studio was wildly inconsistent with it’s use of digital audio and CX, it was Paramount.

Cheers for your reply. Sounds like I’ll be sticking to the blurays then realistically, unless anybody happens to post that some/all of the discs are available with soundtracks already ripped. Frustrating that some of the bluray tracks aren’t 100% accurate. This is one of those ‘ignorance is bliss’ things - I wish I hadn’t read about the mono bluray track complaints. I need to build a device to slingshot around the sun & go back to a period in time before I’d read that! 😉

Does anyone have a laserdisc rip of the soundtrack from Highlander?
I recently got the 30th anniversary blu-ray. Some of the sound effects have been muted down:

There seem to be a few changes which are documented in various forums.
I’m curious about a couple things.

1. Is this 30th anniversary set mixed as it was originally presented? (I suspect not)
2. I know this film has different cuts, not sure which are available on laserdisc.

I read, a few pages back, a request for Star Trek the original series. Put me down as interested in that if they ever turn up!

I really wish studios would give us original mixes along with the latest they’ve presented for their blu-rays.

I have lot of HD-DVD too. Some HD-DVD have better audio than the Blu-Ray version (EAC3 1536 kbps on HD-DVD, AC3 640 on Blu-Ray).

I also have some French DTS theater CDs, which I decoded and synchronized on BR.

How would I be able to get a WAV or PCM file for the original “Back to the Future” and “Apocalypse Now (theatrical cut)” with the Laserdisc PCM 2.0 16 or 24bit audio to mux with the new UHD MKV?

Howdy. After many years of saying that I’ll eventually get to preserving LD audio, I finally got around to starting it. I have a D704 and have tested DTS and PCM bit-perfect preservation (AC-3 pending), and I have three questions:

1. What is the best way to edit out the dead audio from a file? I would think a python script or something to read the data and remove the dead audio would be the best, but I haven’t found a tool that’s perfect. DTSParser stops at the side break of a DTS recording, and with PCM I don’t want to hear a pop.

2. I looked before asking this - how are people syncing up the audio with the video? I see posts about 100+ edits on some projects and I wonder how the edits are done without removing bits of the audio which we’re trying to preserve in the first place. Does the audio waver in parts? Have people stretched/compressed the time of the audio to sync with the video?

3. What tool are people using to test the synchronization of the audio and video? AviSynth?
