This project will at some point develop into something, but not for quite a while. To be quite honest, I’d love to see if a new 4K bluray will be released. The examples here are highly conceptual, and not intended to be taken as any idea of what the final product would look like. I’m sure I could vouch for it to look better.

They look great. Its like they were out of focus and you justed focused them. Amazing. Hope you so get around to doing this.

So I’ve kinda been thinking about resurrecting this project at least for ANH after having seen Rogue One. Since these earlier tests I’ve learned more methods for color and detail recovery I’ve needed on the prequel projects, as well as the full knowledge of Davinci Resolve which I’ve found to allow me the opportunity to produce far more refined grades.

Mainly I’m thinking about doing a sort of modernized grade of the ANH Blu-ray. It would have the enhanced detail, finer grain (a grain free look is probably best not to try to achieve), and trying to emulate the more dynamic lighting style of Rogue One.

Unlike with the prequels, I feel there’s enough consistency within the transfer to make at least the ANH product something far quicker to complete.

I’ll see about putting out a clip in a few months…I’m still waiting for the Rogue One blu-ray so I have a proper source for reference.

Good to hear! This project is one that definitely interested me.

Both this and your PT project are very interesting, hope to see more soon!

Just thought I’d post upscales of the OT here as well. It’s been denoised and upscaled to 8k, although these are sourced from Adywan’s new 1080p ANH SE grade from last year. If I ever carry out an OT restoration, it’ll be based on the rumored upcoming 4K releases that I assume will debut on Disney+ in November, and come out on UHD Bluray May 2020. The project will be rendered out at 4k, but I may upsample to 8k and sharpen and denoise at that resolution, which is how I was doing this project previously. Of course I hope to be building a new computer next year and add plenty of hard drive space for my PT project, and this one if I decide to afterwards.

There are some artifacts, and the denoising needs some tweaking, so very much see these as drafts. Also, I have not applied the 70mm regrain yet, as to show off the raw amount of detail added.

I may also try to mess around with squeezing more detail out of 4K77, 4K80, and 4K83 in the future, if I want to make the best out of the theatrical versions, assuming Disney doesn’t release official versions of the unaltered cuts.

Emanswfan, to me this almost looks perfect as is! The color and gamma look fantastic! Is it possible you could release this without grain if software, interest, and time aren’t forbidding?

Looks awesome. If you don’t mind sharing, what’s your process for the upscale - AI Gigapixel, and what other filters, etc?

Edit: The only way I could see it being improved if it you could sharpen the parts of the image which aren’t quite in focus (e.g. the stormtrooper helmets in the Leia shot) before the upscale, to trick Gigapixel into treating them the same way it treats the sharper parts of the image.
