It wouldn’t surprise me if their desire to curb the bootleg market played a small role in their decision, too. Not because they’re losing more than a negligible amount of money from bootlegs and fan preservations, because they’re not, but rather because it looks a little bad for the brand.

Whatever the reason let’s hope they see the light and take our money gosh darnit!!

If that was the rationale, there might be a glimmer of hope for that other heavily bootlegged film they keep hiding in the vault.

Rumor: The Complete Star Wars Saga Boxed Set Coming to 4K Blu-ray in 2020

Sources have reportedly told The Digital Bits that Lucasfilm will be releasing a complete boxed set of The Complete Star Wars Saga in gorgeous 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray sometime in 2020 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. We’ve already seen a report stating 4K editions of the Original Trilogy do exist, so a 2020 release for a complete boxed set of the Skywalker saga is definitely within reason.

With the home media release of Episode IX expected to arrive sometime during the first quarter of 2020, a complete boxed set of the Skywalker saga (in both regular Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD formats) could be released basically anytime after that time period. Talk about the perfect holiday gift, right?

I was overjoyed when the OT and PT made the jump to Blu-ray back in 2011 (remember that goosebump-inducing trailer? I embedded it below for your viewing pleasure). That level of excitement from 2011 will increase tenfold when I get my hands on the saga in 4K.

“More and more, our sources are hinting that Disney and Lucasfilm are likely to release The Complete Star Wars Saga in Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD box sets next year. It makes sense for a number of reasons. First, the final film in the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will be arriving on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K, and Digital early in 2020. That’s reportedly going to be the last such film to be released in the franchise for at least a few years, so it would make sense that they’d release a complete box set of everything to that point. Also, The Empire Strikes Back celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020. And once Disney is done releasing all of their Marvel and Pixar product in 4K, there’s only one big franchise left untapped on the format. For all of these reasons, we think it’s likely that we’ll see these films in 4K next year. We already know that the classic trilogy has been scanned from the original negatives (new 4K masters are done and ready), and the prequels will no doubt be upsampled and digitally restored. Whether Disney and Lucasfilm would consider including the original theatrical versions of those classic films is the $24,000 question. My gut tells me to assume they won’t, at this point. Then, if they do, you can be pleasantly surprised. So take that all as a rumor for now and stay tuned for more here as it comes in.”

Yes…because, if there were ever a reliable source at this point, it’s TDB.

I’ll say the same thing I’m sure I’ve said on at least two or three occasions. Until I see the word ‘CONFIRMED’ I take nothing with a grain of salt.

All I’m hoping for is not botched up transfers. We’ve already got fantastic fan restorations at work, so I’m just hoping whatever official version they come up with looks pleasing to the eye.

I’m not deluded, I meant that one should trust those rumours less than one should trust Jaba the Hutt.

A rumor is a rumor. It can be trusted or not trusted. My point is I will not get hyped for anything until something is confirmed. ‘Rumor’ as far as I’m concerned means nothing because ‘Rumor of Original Trilogy reissue’ has been a headline that’s come out like once a year for like the last decade! Give a confirmation then you’ll have my attention.

The rumor isn’t OUT, it’s OT, to which I say, “Star Wars in 4K soon? No shit.”

Is 4K the next logical step? Yes.
Is it confirmed? No.

Again my point is until I see a confirmation everything is a rumor and that’s that.

And to be fair I did not say OUT.

You did though, by saying it’s been making the headlines for the last 10 years to no release. The SEs were released in Bluray, so you could only be talking about OUT. And yeah, CHEWBAKAspelledwrong has it pretty much right.

Yes but even within these last 10 years there’s been rumors of a 4K release up the wazoo. Sure they didn’t really start up til circa 2014 but nonetheless within this decade. So fine. I partially misquoted, I partially misinformed. I was wrong and I wasn’t wrong. But again my only argument was I take everything with the words ‘rumor’, ‘(unidentified) sources say’, ‘reportedly’ blah blah blah as nothing more than rumors. I’m far past the speculation stage by now with or without the OUT. Just give a confirmation already. That’s all I was saying. And again I agree 4K is the next logical step. But again as of now it’s just further unconfirmed speculation.

(Breathes in and out)

Ok we’re good. On a positive note let’s hope these ‘rumors’ come to fruition.

CNN is airing a 6-part docuseries called The Movies. They’re going in a weird order, starting in the 80’s and taking us up to today before jumping back to the 70’s (the one that aired earlier tonight) and then covering the 60’s and “the golden age” for the final two.

When they showed the very last shots up to and including the Death Star blowing up, it was blatantly the original version.

I know every time something like this happens we dismiss it and say “it doesn’t mean anything,” but at a glance the footage at least looked like full hd quality to my eyes and not like an upscale of the GOUT.

The irony is that the very last shot of the episode on The 80’s was the DS2 blowing up and it was blatantly from the SE.

Edited to add:

Someone posted about this on another forum I frequent, and they pointed out that the Han/Greedo “Yes, I bet you have” clip was also the unaltered version.

I suppose it’s possible cnn simply used the Harmy version, but like I said, it didn’t look like upscaled GOUT footage to me.

If anyone wants to look it up for themselves on their computer or cable box, it should be right after the very last commercial break towards the end.

Yes, I saw it last night… also DVR’d it to rewatch. CNN is on-demand on my system as well… also in HD. I examined the footage several times. It is definitely NOT an upscale of the GOUT. This is the original version of STAR WARS 1977 that is used… source unknown, but it is the original version. Han and Greedo scene original. Death Star explosion and escape original. At first I might have thought it was Harmy’s but now I think they have an HD restored source. Also, TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is showing a '70s Sci-Fi marathon starting July 30th at 5pm EST. They are showing Close Encoutners, Star Wars and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan… among many others all night long. Curious as to which version of Star Wars they will show… keep watching the skies

This kinda reminds me of when I mentioned this last year though that show had the OUT DS2 explosion.

I found the episode on AMC’s site so I have some screengrabs. Most dont look to be HD, notably the DSII explosion and the Falcon leaving Mos Eisley but they don’t appear to be GOUT sourced. I found another shot which I think might be from the original, the shot of the Rebel fighters going into attack. I may be wrong about that shot though but figured I’d share it anyways. I used a snipping tool for these so framing may not be 100% accurate. I also have a link to the episode below.

Although now that I think of it, there were no Greedo subtitles. Looks like it’s a mix of different sources? Not sure. Those are all the screenshots I took before my “preview of CNNgo” ran out. It’s easy to find if anyone wants to investigate further, but it’s definitely all Blu-ray/GOUT/Despecialized, not a new source.

That’s absolutely hilarious that they’re using fan preservations…

Has that actually been done before???

I don’t know if an outlet as big-name as CNN has ever used unaltered footage before, Harmy or otherwise.

The Story of Film: An Odyssey used unaltered footage, which would’ve been GOUT-sourced since it was finished in 2011.

The timing of this is rather interesting, coming so soon after the Academy 70mm screening and, as mentioned above, with ANH airing on TCM tonight. It’s worth noting that CNN and TCM are, if I’m not mistaken, both part of the Turner media empire that currently has the broadcast rights to all the Star Wars movies.

I’m not exactly expecting TCM to just throw on the Harmy version, nor am I getting my hopes up that this will be some surprise debut of an officially restored ‘77 Star Wars (but wouldn’t that be nice). TCM does like to show movies uncut and in their original ratio, though. So it will probably be the blu-ray master “as is” without any edits or commercial breaks.

I couldn’t help but notice that the framing of the CNN and Despecialized shots don’t perfectly match. Assuming they are in fact from the same source, I guess CNN simply pushed in on the framing a little bit?
