I haven’t burned it. It plays glitchy on this shot (see link below) on both MPC and my Zappiti 4K HDR mediaplayer.

This is still in v2.0. Its obviously an issue of something specifically just not playing nice with Premiere’s export. I even tried upping the bitrate substantially and just outputting this sequence…comes out pixelated every time. Ah well. Not worth sweating over a few seconds. Definitely peculiar, though.

Damn! That sucks. 'Cause the glitch is definitely not there on the logo-free open matte version I have:
https://www.zupimages.net/up/18/25/2tup.jpg
Nor it is on a scope “hdtv” recording of the SE I have:
https://www.zupimages.net/up/18/25/3ij6.jpg
Maybe the solution could be to cut it out, working on it seperately, and then cutting it back in. I don’t know, just thinking out loud…

Yeah no idea. It’s not the source file, it isn’t there on the SE footage itself, it just occurs upon export. v2.0 is even a slightly different bitrate than v1.0. Premiere just hates that one shot, LOL.

I’ve made French subtitles for this specific version, based on the originals, meaning before they were poorly remade for the DVD. Whomever is interested can PM me.

That one wasn’t my share. My version was a BD25.

It’s up on the spleen, but I don’t have a public link at the moment.

Hey, I see its been awhile since anyone posted on here. Is the Spleen even up anymore? I don’t have access unfortunately. But I was hoping to get a link to this somehow. I hate the one with the water mark I got already and found this thread and had high hoops that were crushed quickly lol. Thanks and hope everyone is doing well, healthy and safe!

I have decided to watch the Abyss after a long time. I’ve found two versions online…one is the theatrical edition at 2:35.1 and the other is the special edition at what looks like 1:78.1.

What is the proper ratio ?

The true ratio is 1.33.

So, it will be cropped no matter which version I watch ? Comparing the two, the theatrical 2:35 version seems overly cropped and even a little bit distracting.

2.39:1 is the theatrical ratio. But it isn’t that simple; it’s a Super 35 movie, which means the open-matte versions aren’t pan and scan - you see more of the screen with those versions. But the true theatrical ratio is 2.39:1, always has been.

For those wondering, a Spanish-dubbed version of the Special Edition was released on VHS, with English subtitles (apparently a Fox thing). You can find it on Amazon. I don’t know if it’s fully dubbed or if the Special Edition-exclusive scenes remained in English, but it’s worth checking out.

Finally, there will be a official 4K Blu Ray coming out next year

Does anyone happen to have an extra DVD copy of ‘Back Into The Abyss’ that they’d be interested in selling to me? Or know of anywhere online where it may be available?

I really enjoyed the 5-part mini doc on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/@stevejohnsonfx/search?query=back into the abyss), and would love to see all that the DVD has to offer. I went ahead and e-mailed the original DVD distributor, EonEntertainment (sales@eonentertainment.com), to ask about the possibility of a re-release. Maybe if enough of us who are interested send them an e-mail, they’ll consider it?

All Jim Cameron’s movies are getting 4K releases over the next months, including A L I E N S and True Lies… And extended cuts of Avatar https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/111523-0659

Only a month ago I would of expected that link to be Rick Roll or something

yeah
cool news, can’t wait to get all those discs!
on a side note, there will likely be a 4k scan of most of the theatrical edition of The Abyss going next year (print has a missing section)

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the streaming versions have come online, and all 3 of the upcoming Jim Cameron discs have been hugely AI futzed with. True Lies is easily the worst of the bunch, but the Abyss also got slapped with the AI upscale stick too. It’s watchable compared to True Lies, but definitely doesn’t look like film, a bit unnatural. True Lies however, think the Terminator 2 UHD with the added bonus of AI giving everyone insane eyes and face worms instead of skin creases. The 35mm scan may have to reign supreme for now

Funny how the Terminator’s origins is about the dangers of A.I. and now Cameron’s movies are being fuddled with even further specifically because of it, lol. Fans have been waiting for these 2 films to be put out on blu-ray for years and now I bet they’re wishing they were released sooner even more now, since the A.I technology didn’t exist 10 years ago or even 5 years ago lol.
