Kick-ass horror movies

I'm sick and tired of all the new "horror" movie crap that Hollywood comes out with these days, like "House of Wax" and "The Grudge". Whatever happened to the good old days, when zombie movies were actually interesting and you actually got scared while watching these flicks? If not actually scary, then at least good, "Evil Dead" style. What are some more awesome horror flicks?

I'd have to say the "Evil Dead" trilogy is at the top of my list, and Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses" was pretty good. I just got done watching "The Prophecy", which was.....okay. Viggo Mortensen made a surprisingly good Lucifer. "Candyman" was also pretty good.

In this thread, I was kinda hoping some horror movie buffs could enlighten us on some of the more obscure gems of the genre. I've taken quite an interest in horror films in the last few months and the local Blockbuster is sort of lacking.

The original House of Wax, Hitchcock classics Psycho and The Birds.
I've only seen it a couple times on Sci-Fi channel, but I kind of like (Wes Craven's) Wishmaster.

Oh of course, Psycho, but I don't consider it a horror flick, it's more of a "suspense thriller", as most Hitchcock films.

Although the "Nightmare On Elm Street" has never been near the top of my favorite movies list, I did think "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" was a pretty interesting concept.

Honestly, I hated the Texas Chainsaw remake. Dead-Alive is awesome, I've seen it many times.

If you want a disturbing film, check out Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes".

If you saw what happened to my (at the time) 10-12 year old sister, trust me, I think horror is a decent classification. Did I ever get in trouble for what I did.

On the Bravo channel, they had a show entitled "100 Scariest Movie Moments" around Halloween last year, and their #1 was "Jaws", closely followed by "The Exorcist" and "Alien".

For those who don't know (dark_jedi), "Dead Alive" was written and directed in 1993 by Peter "Lard of the Rings" Jackson, and is definitely the funniest/goriest zombie movie I've ever seen. You would also do well to check out Jackson's "Bad Taste"; not a horror movie, but still awesome.

Bad taste is pretty good also.

A recent gem I found is John Carpenter’s They Live, aliens are taking over and only Rowdy Rodney Piper with is special 50cent sunglasses can save the world. Great movie most see!

It's one of my favorite films, showing Peter Jackson's GOOD side, he made some GREAT movies before LOTR (well... actually before that ghosts one with Michael J Fox). I wouldn't consider it a horror film, as it's meant to be a comedy. It has the record of most blood in a single movie (actually a single scene!). It's a great movie, if you haven't seen it, see it now (uncut please).

How about the Horror classics such as Bela Lugosi's Dracula, and Boris Karloff's Frankenstein and Bride of Brankenstein? I also like the early Hammer films.

I haven't seen much Hammer movies or old classics, to be honest. Not exactly the kind of film I enjoy.

Here's a silly little horror flick from the early 70s (I think) I enjoyed: Dr. Phibes. Anyone seen that one? And the sequel?

Some of my personal favorites include the Evil Dead trilogy, Romero's Living Dead movies (haven't seen Land of the Dead yet), 28 Days Later, and The People Under the Stairs. That Fremen from Dune running around with the Gimp outfit cracks me up every time.

"the Jeepers Creepers movies were pretty good too"

My wife and I really enjoyed the first one, but the second was just a rehash.

"I love "when a stranger appears" and "Ring"

The original Japanese Ringu was far superior. The American version threw in everything but the kitchen sink.

"and their #1 was "Jaws", closely followed by "The Exorcist" and "Alien".

I love all three.

"A recent gem I found is John Carpenter’s They Live"

Gem? More like a nugget of coal. The Thing is still his best, but Scanners is a guilty pleasure of mine.

"How about the Horror classics such as Bela Lugosi's Dracula, and Boris Karloff's Frankenstein and Bride of Brankenstein? I also like the early Hammer films."

My neighbor buys the originals. I recently watched "The Pit and the Pendulum". Holy Cow! What a spooky film.

"HOW ABOUT THE ORIGINAL PHANTASM ???"

A cool but freaky movie.

"The People Under the Stairs."

I have that on DVD as well.

I'm more into the spooky movies myself. Stir of Echoes is a fantastic film, and I've always loved The Changeling.

I was thinking about renting "Cronos", directed by Guillermo del Toro; it won a bunch of Mexican Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Is this one worth picking up?

When does horror stop being horror and just become all out blood and guts?
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.
