You mentioned using SiliconMaster482’s version of R2 being captured by the Super Battle Droids. Is there any chance you might implement the little music sting they added over “hands up jedi!” as well?

It’s a small thing but I really think it helps to make that scene feel more complete.

I also recommend taking a look at their version of the apartment scene after Obi-Wan leaves for Utapau. I think it does a good job of removing all traces of the second dream sequence while keeping what works about the scene.

I don’t happen to have the edit already, but could you post a clip? If not I’ll seek it out and check what it’s like. Thanks as always for tossing out an idea!

Well, I think Silicon’s idea for how to include the apartment scene works really well… without also including the sunset Palpatine office scene.

Seems to me that we have two options for V6. One is to just leave things as they are, which would be:

[Wookiee battle] > [Anakin and Obi-Wan make up] > [Sunset Palpatine office scene] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau]

Or, including the apartment scene would be:

[Wookiee battle] > [Anakin and Obi-Wan make up] > [Anakin and Padmé in apartment] > [Sunset Palpatine office scene] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau]

In this setup, I am concerned that the sunset Palpatine office scene would become a little bit more of a pacing killer. However, we would go from Anakin making up with Obi-Wan to becoming concerned that he stopped by without his knowing, then to Palpatine prompting him to more explicitly entertain the idea that Padmé has something to hide.
Again, the wipe from Anakin and Padmé after the line “you expect too much of yourself” to the establishing shot of Palpatine’s office will probably feel boring.

It sounds to me like one should keep one scene or the other, but I’m open to feedback.

I honestly think you should leave it the way it already is in Labyrinth of Evil.

I don’t really know why we need to have Anakin and Obi-Wan make up. The next time they see each other they’re basically enemies. To me, it would make more sense if neither character never had a chance to tell each other how they really felt, and instead the tension that has been building up throughout the film finally explodes by the time they reach Mustafar. Maybe Anakin could see Obi-Wan off, and they seem like they’re going to say something, but they never do.

I think you’re right that it would slow things down, but I’d have to see it in the context of the movie to know if it’s too much. Honestly I think if you take out the Palpatine office scene, the seeds of rebellion scenes as a whole feel superfluous, and I wouldn’t want to see those go because Padme’s character would be underserved as in the theatrical.

The only other option I can see is to break Obi-Wan’s adventure on Utapau in two, so the ordering would go something like this.

[Wookiee battle] > [Anakin and Obi-Wan make up] > [Anakin and Padmé in apartment] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau, up until the shot of him hooded, stepping into the shadows] > [Sunset Palpatine office scene] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau part 2, begins with the establishing shot of the complex where the separatists are meeting]

Author
Time

Yeah, I thought about that, too. That’s how my oooold edit has it, actually.

However, I think Obi-Wan arriving on Utapau ought to ramp up momentum a little bit, and going back to the slow talking scene in Palpatine’s office doesn’t feel right.

There’s also the l8wrtr order:

[Anakin and Obi-Wan make up and Obi-Wan boards the Star Destroyer] > [Anakin and Padmé in apartment] > [Obi-Wan banters with Cody and takes off in his Fighter] > [Sunset Palpatine office scene] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau]

It sounds like it would be jarring but it actually works quite well in his edit.

I’m also partial to where l8wrtr places the 1st seeds of rebellion scene (after Obi-Wan asks Anakin to spy on the chancellor). To me, that scene always felt like the immediate aftermath of the council meeting, hence Anakin bursting out his “what kind of nonsense is this” rant. To wedge Padme’s scene in between as in your edit does, feels a little flow-breaking.

The only issue with l8wrtr’s order there is that the daytime atmosphere of Padme’s scene clashes with the gradual move toward sunset happening between the scenes as ordered in the theatrical version. I wonder if that could be addressed by one of our talented contributors here?

+1 for this. It’s at least worth a shot, IMO.

Thanks for reminding me that L8wrtr tackled it that way. It seems a little jarring to me, but I’ve got an over-sensitive ear for these three particular movies’ transitions, which… no one should develop.

I don’t think it would be good for me to pursue that order for this set of scenes without making use of the nightmare. I think LOE’s existing sequence for this chunk of scenes is best as it already is, given what it is going for overall.

FYI the way I do it is

Ani and Obi make out
Palpatine office
Apartment
Landing on Utapau

In this scenario Palpatine putting doubt into Anakin about Padmé leads directly into him asking her about Obi-wan. The tricky thing though is you have to cut mention of “he came by this morning,” which I did with the help of the preceding dream sequence. Not sure how it’d be done without that, but I do think it’s a strong ordering.

Seriously though, I’m intrigued by the order you suggested. How did you use the dream sequence to get around the “he came by this morning” line?

Author

Dominic, I can see that working really well… with the use of the nightmare.

LOE will remain as is, but I’m glad to vet it some more, heading into the final version. (For reals this time.)

Well the issue being that their dialogue is in an uncut master shot, so it was tricky but the solution I figured was having Anakin say his first line “Obi-wan was here wasn’t he?” play over the very end of the dream, and then cut into the scene right after Padme’s excised line.

Author

The only other solution I can think of with that order is to try to crib Padme saying “yesterday” from her scene with Obi-Wan so she says “he came by yesterday”, but I’m not sure how seamless that would be in practice. Hal is probably fine leaving the scene out of his edit, due to his not wanting to include the second dream sequence (Personally I would just include it, but Hal has certain goals in mind with his edit)

Hal, what are your thoughts on what I mentioned regarding the placement of the 1st “seeds of rebellion” scene?

Lastly, I thought of how the dialogue could flow if you are able to extend the Yoda meditation scene somehow, and it requires no additional dialogue from Rebels or Clone Wars

Qui-Gon: Yoda, my old friend.
Yoda: Master Qui-Gon, into exile I must go. Failed I have.
Qui-Gon: Come to the Dagobah system. You must complete what I could not.

The “Master Qui-Gon” can be taken from Ep 1 and the “Into exile I must go. Failed I have.” Is from a scene in Ep 3 that you cut. What do you think?

At the opera house, the background image of sperm fertilizing an egg at the opera is inexplicable without the line “he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create…life.”

Lol, interesting take. I think Hal already said that he’s bringing back the line about using the force to create life (sans the mention of midichlorians). I think it might also be worth adding back “it’s possible he was conceived by the force (midichlorians in the original film)” to Cloak of Deception while we’re at it. L8wrtr created that dialogue tweak for his edit and it worked quite seamlessly.

I believe I tried that and it didn’t work to my liking.

Interestingly enough, if you look closely in one shot, it subtly re-creates Vader’s mask.

Yeah, the line about creating life is back, along with one about cheating death as Vader is pronounced. I figure if Palpatine plays into TROS, even if only briefly, it’ll be thematically relevant.

I don’t really care for the way the line has to sound in Ep1 of “It’s possible he was conceived by the [Force].” It doesn’t seem seamless to my ears, though I bet L8wrtr did as well as anyone could with the idea. He has no father, and that’s all that’s important. I do not believe Palpatine ‘fathered’ Anakin; The Force did, even if partially in response to the shenanigans the Sith were cooking up. See Darth Plagueia in your local bookstore.

I think the first seeds of rebellion scene almost has to be placed where I have, due to the lighting and time of day. It’s late morning, not approaching sunset as the Anakin-Obi walk ‘n talk or traffic scenes. Even so, it feels more natural than breaking up the latter two scenes mentioned. My opinion; there’s several edits that have placed the scene in both spots.

I’m not sure about Yoda and Qui-Gon… the scene would need new scoring to be extended. The reaction shot of Yoda opens his eyes seems to suggest surprise, and it may be a little awkward to have him respond verbally to Qui-Gon prior.

That’s fair, although I’d argue the time of day appears wrong in both placements. The council scene already has an overcast early evening thing going on and the sun continues to set throughout the next few scenes. The Seeds of Rebellion scene has a bright morning look as you said. If we’re going purely on time of day, I think the most logical place would be after the new placement of the “Plot to destroy the Jedi” scene and before the scene where Anakin misses a briefing.

For what it’s worth, the original graphic novel adaptation places it between “The Chancellor’s request” and the council scene.

I’m making another slight change, prompted by meticulously syncing the ‘Backstroke of the West’ subtitles to LOE V6 from scratch (in the name of greater authenticity and since it was already going to take a lot of work to start from V5 anyway).
I’m putting back in some dialogue I had cut from the scene where Anakin follows up with Palpatine via hologram about having killed the Separatist leaders. Palpatine blows some smoke up his ass about having done a great service to the Empire. This seems to have a more appropriate home in LOE than ROTS.
