Return of the Jedi - Mono Mix (4K83 sync available now. GOUT sync coming soon) (Released)

Hello! I present to you a 4k83 (and soon GOUT) synced release of the ROTJ mono mix as found on Puggo’s “Return of the Pug” 16mm project.

Many thanks to Jaxxon for supplying the print and to Puggo for taking on this project in the first place and kindly supplying us with the uncompressed audio files he captured from his equipment.

I do want to quickly cut to the chase and state that, unlike Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back, this mono mix does not contain any major new/alternate lines or sound effects. That is, non that I could discern.

On the other hand I can confidently say that this is not a simple fold down: sound effects that are buried in the original mix are louder, there are effects that seems to be missing and there’s at least one edit that is rougher on this mix: when R2 breaks Leia’s chains, she normally says “Come on, we’ve got to get out of here.” Maybe it’s me, but you can hear a ‘before’ as if they tried to edit out the rest of a sentence but didn’t bring the slider down fast enough. This seems to be missing on the original stereo mix. My guess would be that this was a hastily put together mix for 16mm prints.

I must also point out that there is some missing audio:

  • a few drum rolls at the beginning
  • the first reel change (on 16mm it’s after they leave Tatooine).
  • A second or so when the stolen shuttle lands on Endor (I am guessing this was missing on the original print??)
  • a second or so when Leia follows Luke outside. (I am guessing this was missing on the original print??)
  • a second or so when the superstar destroyer crashes into the Death Star. (I am guessing this was missing on the original print??)

Instead of filling them in with an alternate source, I decided just to leave them as is in order to keep it as authentic as possible.

Of course, keep in mind that this is a capture of an optical audio track from a 16mm print. The sound is never great on these types of prints: there’s a lot of distortion and wobble and there is barely any dynamic range so it’s very compressed.

I’ll give people a link to download the file if they wish. After that, you’re free to put it on usenet or mega or whatever.

I honestly don’t remember, but did you do fill – or need to fill – for the ESB mono mix?

Good question… the only spot I really remember was the intro which was missing the entire drum roll and first opening notes of the 20th century fox fanfare. I spent a lot of time trying to get the stereo mix to match.

I remember Puggo saying that he had already patched 5 seconds of audio before sending me the audio but he couldn’t remember which parts.

Are you crediting Jaxxon, the owner of the 16mm print as well?

Ah! My mistake! I will correct this in the OP, stat!

Any news on the GOUT sync? It’s mostly the same as the 4k83 sync, right?

I should have some free time this week.

But I will admit that I’m a little confused as to which GOUT mix I should use to sync the mono mix to. With all this talk of Jedi’s audio already being off sync and the discrepancies between the pal and ntsc releases… I’m a bit lost…

Ah, OK. So the GOUT mix to sync to is the NTSC GOUT. The trick is, the audio for the NTSC GOUT isn’t synced very well to begin with. You could do better by first syncing to a well-synced source (4K83, which you already have done), and then trimming out the extra frames – that’s the two frames in the rebel fleet establishing shot after Luke’s last scene on Dagobah. Trim those two frames and patch over the audio so it’s smooth, and you’ll not only be NTSC GOUT-synced, but actually be better synced than the actual audio from the NTSC GOUT!

Do you want 4K83 or NTSC-GOUT (DeEd) sync? DTS-MA or Dolby Digital (ac3)?

Argh, sorry, I overpromised. I thought I still had the original 4K83 sync around, but all I have is the GOUT sync.

Here I am!

Wait Catbus, did you end up doing a GOUT sync? I’ll admit I’ve been busy and have only now been replying to messages from months ago.

I don’t have a DTS-HD track. Just a FLAC track. I can send you a link for that if you’d like.

If it’s only a FLAC track, I hope you can send it to CatBus and he will convert it to DTS-HD.

Yup, I did a GOUT sync. I can provide links to the lossy and lossless encodes of this (I’ll need to upload them first), and also encode the FLAC track into DTS-HD, if you send it to me again.

Ah! Sorry I never got around to it and thank you for picking up the slack. I’m about to send you a PM with a link for the flac file.

It’s posted already on the star wars trilogy boards on the audio thread for 4K83. DTS-HD MA and 192kbps AC3 are posted.

Hi, anyone can send me the links to download these two tracks?
Thanks in advance.
